What do you think of a lovely birthday cake for husband and dad? Isn’t it a great part of a birthday gift for a man you love? Today’s cooking possibilities allow making cakes that will match the personality of your man and leave him pleased for a very long time. It’s not only delicious, it’s a sign of your attention and affection, which is never forgotten.

What is a birthday cake for husband?

First of all, you need to think of the type of a cake your husband loves best of all. There are several usual sorts of cakes that are used as a base for the further design. As a rule, these are regular sponge cakes but in some specific cases it may be possible to order, say, a traditional Nigerian sponge cake that’s not like western ones, or a red velvet cake that has an astonishing taste.

Then, you need to think of possible designs that would match the personality or interests of your hubby. For example, if he loves sports, it may be possible to design a cake that looks like a football field, a ball, or something else your husband would like. Such a cake would show him that you know his interests and hobbies and that you give this matter enough attention.

However, it may happen that you share the same hobby. In this case, you may order a cake that shows both of you doing something that you like to do in your free time: riding bicycles, swimming, even watching TV while cuddling on a coach. Technically, you can choose any available methods: small figurines that represent you and your husband made of fondant, a picture of the two of you or whatever else the chosen cake maker can do for you.

Take a look at this lovely cake dedicated to a fan of fishing. If your husband loves it or if he’s into fish breeding, which is so popular in Nigeria, just use this idea.

If your husband has skillful hands for carpentry, plumbing or other household works and likes spending hours with screws and wrenches, this is also an idea for a birthday cake design. Just find a cake maker who is skillful enough to create the correct shapes of all the tools and small details.

If you are a fan of simplicity, just order a regular cake with cream decorations (or with fondant, as you like) and have some lovely words written on it and, possibly, a heart or so. Sometimes, it makes sense to add some nice phrase that has a special meaning just for the two of you. It’s a very romantic and sweet gift that is always pleasant.

There’s a popular type of birthday cakes for men that look like suits or shirts with ties or other men’s accessories such cakes are often chosen when it’s necessary to greet a man on his birthday and make an accent on his being a businessman or an owner of a prestigious job. As a rule, such cakes are also decorated with other items that determine a busy and successful person: a phone, money, fashionable labels on the clothes.

Sometimes, even shoes can look impressive when used as a cake decoration. Check out this wonderful cake design with a trainer on it. It’s for a real fitness fan who knows what all these things are about – a water bottle, a training schedule, and a watch that shows something that’s clear only to those who are in the trend.

Since young Nigerian men often strive for luxury and a well-off life, they would appreciate a cake made in the shape of a fashionable expensive car or other things that determine luxury: gilded wristwatch, game tokens, cards and so on. A cake that’s made in the shape of a dial-plate of an expensive watch can also be a lovely and funny surprise.

There are cakes that represent the package of other signs of luxury: expensive whiskey, cigars, or things like that. Check out this cigar box that looks so natural and interesting. Your husband will appreciate the surprise when he sees such a beautiful job.

Birthday cake

Sometimes, it makes sense to use profession and environment of your husband to create the birthday cake in a slightly different form. For example, if your man is a military officer, a cake finished in specific military tones and decorated with small fondant soldiers may be a good thing but it’s very important that the scene on the cake doesn’t represent a true military conflict because it’s not fun.

What is a birthday cake for father?

Birthday cake

If you are choosing a cake for a father, the general rules are the same. Find something that the man would appreciate – his hobby, things he likes in general, some of his ways, or something funny – and represent it in a cake. If you are this man’s child, order a cake with a fondant mini-you. It’s touching and lovely for a father.

Birthday cake

In separate cases, it makes sense to choose a simple cake with only some words of love and greetings. It may be more impressive than complicated designs. If you are ordering a cake for your husband but on behalf of your children, find out whether it’s possible that the kids write something nice on the cake themselves. It will also be touching and sweet for the father to receive such a gift from his little ones.

Which birthday cake designs for husband and father to choose?

Birthday cake

The choice of a good design is not complicated. Still, some people manage to make a big mistake when doing this. There’s a stereotype that all men love the same things (and so do all women) and that if you need a cake for a man, it should be finished in black colors and have only a few decorations.

Men are different and being a man doesn’t necessarily mean loving whiskey or smoking cigars. Instead, a birthday cake you are ordering for your particular man is a thing that should be customized in compliance with his likes and interests. If he’s not a car fan, ordering him a cake that looks like a car will be senseless. It’s better to think twice and choose something that will represent his personality and interests.

Birthday cake

If your man has a good sense of humor, think about ordering a funny cake with an unusual design but only in case it will be appreciated in a proper way. You don’t want to spoil the whole thing, right? Just choose something that reminds you of your man and that will definitely bring a smile to his face.

10 problems Nigerian sorghum farmers have to deal with

$

Sorghum production in Nigeria is very important, as this cereal crop is one of the most significant in the world. However, there are quite a few problems that farmers might run into along the way that could impede the production of sorghum.

10 challenges in sorghum farming in Nigeria

As sorghum is an essential cereal for Nigerians, as well as the rest of the world, it is understandable that people want to know what challenges to expect when dealing with sorghum production. We have compiled a list of 10 most common problems Nigerian farmers face when growing this crop. Here they are:

Striga infestation

Problems of sorghum production in Nigeria

Photo: asareca.org

Farmers across Africa are unanimous in thinking that Striga is by far one of the biggest constraints in sorghum cultivation. This parasitic plant, which is also known as Witchweed, is capable of destroying an entire crop, and, as you might expect, this is not good for the production of this cereal.

READ ALSO: 20 common weeds in Nigeria every citizen should know

The problem lies in the fact that it is very hard to deal with Striga. It is an incredibly adaptable plant, capable of withstanding very low temperatures and thriving in warm moist environments. Moreover, most of the life cycle of this plant happens underground, and if it goes undetected, crop losses are inevitable.

Low soil fertility

Problems of sorghum production in Nigeria

Photo: shutterstock.com

This is a common problem for the whole of Nigeria, particularly in the North. Soils all over the country usually have low fertility, and for the longest time, not much has been done about this in terms of nutrient replenishment.

Nowadays, when the importance of soil fertility improvement is understood, and there are measures in place to deal with this, some soils have quite some time before they are up to par. In addition to that, not all farmers remember about crop rotation and other methods, thus draining the already weak soil.

Drought

Problems of sorghum production in Nigeria

Photo: pmnewsnigeria.com

While most farmers are capable of dealing with the usual droughts, some droughts are too extreme even for the most prepared. Even though most varieties of sorghum are drought-resistant, even the most resilient plants can show the signs of stress when there is not enough moisture: curled up leaves, smaller than normal plants, even the death of the lower leaves.

Damage by birds

Problems of sorghum production in Nigeria

Photo: videoblocks.com

As well as many other crops, sorghum is mostly not immune to bird damage. The plants are particularly vulnerable during the flowering period, as it makes them highly visible and attractive to such birds as parakeets, baya weavers, sparrows and others.

One of the biggest issues with birds is that they can cause problems on all stages of sorghum production, from sowing to harvesting. They can cause up to 80% yield loss, especially if they flock together. Farmers should consider investing into some bird control methods if they want to keep their plants safe.

Insects and diseases

Problems of sorghum production in Nigeria

READ ALSO: Types of insects that might be dangerous in Nigeria

Sorghum is vulnerable to insects and diseases on all stages of cultivation. There are numerous insect pests, including European corn borers, grasshoppers, midges, webworms and many others that can seriously harm the sorghum plants.

As for diseases, sorghum often suffers from stalk rotting fungi, seedling blight, pythiumis, bacterial leaf diseases, sorghum rust, sooty stripe and others. If not taken care of, these pests and diseases can seriously harm or even wipe out the crop.

Lack of access to improved varieties of sorghum

Problems of sorghum production in Nigeria

Photo: phys.org

Agriculture does not stand still, as more and more crop varieties emerge that are better performing than their predecessors. Improved crop varieties are not only capable of withstanding harsher conditions and be more resilient to birds and pests, but they are also capable of higher grain yields and early maturity, which is essential for many farmers.

That said, not all farmers know about them, and even if they do, some might not be able to afford the improved varieties.

Use of recycled seeds

Problems of sorghum production in Nigeria

Photo: seedworld.com

Some farmers that produce seeds prefer to multiply their seeds on-farm without frequently renewing seeds. This is called seed recycling, and it might cause low seed quality, which in turn can lead to reduced yield.

However, that is not the only reason to stop using recycled seeds. When done incorrectly, seed recycling might cause seed-borne pathogens and other health concerns.

Lack of access to production inputs

Even though sorghum is capable of withstanding quite a lot, it is still vulnerable to some diseases and pests. As we have mentioned before, Striga is one of the biggest challenges in sorghum production, but even it can be dealt with, as long as there are appropriate tools for it.

Unfortunately, not all farmers can afford all of the fancy herbicides, as well as fungicides, insecticides and fertilisers. This significantly impedes the process of growing sorghum and decreases yield, thus bringing less income, which means that, once again, the farmers cannot afford to buy the tools to break this vicious circle.

Limited access to tractor services

Problems of sorghum production in Nigeria

Photo: deere.com

This is especially relevant for small-scale farmers in poorer regions of the country. Many such farmers cannot afford tractor hiring services, or they do not have access to the hiring points. The lack of tractor services means more hard work on the fields, and it is definitely not easy on the body. It also means lower yields, as people are not capable of being as efficient as machines.

With the opening of more hiring points and lowering the prices for hiring tractors, this challenge can be easily avoided.

Storage pests

Problems of sorghum production in Nigeria

Photo: eagri.org

Even if everything is fine during the growth of the sorghum plant, there is a high chance that the grains might be seriously damaged by storage pests. There are several pests that pose huge threats to sorghum, as well as other grains, including T.castaneum, S. cerealella, S. zeamais and C. maculatus.

If control measures are lacking or non-existent, these pests can become a very significant threat to the stored grains, resulting in food insecurity and loss of income.

As you can see, there are plenty of challenges in sorghum production in Nigeria. That said, many can be taken care of, provided there are enough resources to do so.

- Many social media users have reacted to the photos, stating that the practice is child abuse and should be stopped immediately

Reports reaching Legit.ng claim that a 70-year-old man identified as Alhaji Yakubu (Nafsi-Nafsi) married an underage girl in Lapai local government area of Niger state on December 10. A certain Facebook user in the name of Aliyu Umar shared the photos on his page and congratulated Alhaji Yakubu for successfully marrying the young girl who many are claiming is barely 15 years of age.

The photos have sparked outrage on social media with many internet users condemning the rather abominable act which shouldn't be praised or even allowed to happen in 2018. There's been many cases of child abuse and child marriage leading to deaths of either the victims or the perpetrators.

Recently, many Nigerians mourned the untimely death of 13-year-old Ochanya Obanje who was a victim of abuse for many years perpetuated by her uncle and his son. Ochanya died as a result of complications from Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF).

US reacts to Jonathan’s new book, says former president misrepresented facts

- The United States spoke on the allegations raised in former president Jonathan’s new book

- Jonathan had claimed in the book that ex-President Obama meddled in the 2015 elections

- The US, however, described Jonathan’s claims as a “mischaracterisation”

- The US consulate in Nigeria added that the US does not support any candidate but helps in ensuring a credible and fair electoral process

The United States consulate in Nigeria has responded to allegations contained in My Transition Hours, a new book written by former President Goodluck Jonathan about his time in office as Nigeria’s number one citizen.

Jonathan had in the book claimed that former United States president, Barack Obama, meddled in the 2015 presidential elections in favour of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Jonathan said Obama’s support for Buhari was so glaring that he released a video shortly before the election, asking Nigerians to “open a new chapter”.

READ ALSO: Breaking: Ex-governor, 3 gubernatorial candidates defect from PDP to APC

He had also in the book berated Obama for sending the then Secretary of State, John Kerry, to Nigeria on the eve of the election to protest against moves to postpone the election.

However, in a live chat on Facebook which was monitored by The Punch, the public affairs officer at the US Consulate General Lagos, Russell Brooks, described Jonathan’s claims as a “mischaracterisation”.

Brooks was quoted to have said: “It was mischaracterised in the book about what President Obama or his administration did in Nigeria. The mischaracterisation here refers to not comprehending why we felt it was important for Nigeria to have a peaceful, free and fair election in 2015.

“And thereby people may not understand why we placed so much importance of having a peaceful, free and fair and transparent election in 2019.

“In the past, Nigeria’s elections had been beset by violence, there have been questions about the fairness of those elections. And we certainly believe that Nigeria can do better. In 2015, Nigeria did do better.

“There may have been some difficulties as they often times occur in elections whether here in Nigeria or in the United States. But Nigeria did do better and we believe Nigeria will continue to make progress.”

When asked if the US would be supporting any presidential candidate ahead of the 2019 election, Brooks said the US would continue to remain neutral.

He said the only thing the US would be supporting is a credible and fair process.

Brooks added: “We are not favouring or supporting any candidate. It is up to the Nigerian people to decide. Our candidate is the process. The process should be free and fair, it should be a non-violent process. I am not talking of any plus or minus of any candidate, we are not favouring any candidate. We are not trying to influence the success of any candidate. That is not our role.”

He said the US would support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the media and Civil Society Organisations especially in the area of capacity building.

Brooks said: “We are helping Nigeria to make that progress through our support to INEC, to civil society here in Nigeria; through our assistance to the press and enabling them to also play a positive role in the coverage of the elections.

“All these show how important we believe it is for Nigeria to have an election process that can be credible and stand against any election anywhere in the world. We believe Nigeria can accomplish that.”

Part of the statement read: “Senator Buruji, in his forced hallucination, has failed to realize that Nigerians, particularly the voters in Ogun state, have seen through his antics; they know that he is not the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun state; they know that he has a pact with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to destabilize the PDP; they also know that he is a clown on a journey to no where.

“Nigerians are aware that Senator Buruji never purchased PDP nomination form; never participated in our governorship primary or in any process related to nomination of governorship candidate of our party or any position whatsoever.

“Those using Senator Buruji as their agent have turned him into object of public ridicule, particularly in his charade of organizing a rally to hand a fake flag to himself.

“The PDP therefore urges the people of Ogun state to completely disregard Senator Buruji as a clown and continue in their support for the PDP governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, who is already coasting to victory.”

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Abuja said Nigerian government remains deeply grateful to the government and people of Switzerland for their support in resuscitating the economy, especially the return of illegally stolen funds.

Receiving Letters of Credence from the Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, Mr George Steiner, at the Presidential Villa, President Buhari said the return of stolen funds and interventions in the crisis in the North East further indicate the Swiss government’s commitment to the development of Nigeria.

“We are grateful to the Swiss government for allowing illegally stolen funds to be brought back to Nigeria,’’ he said.

The President noted that the facilitating roles the Swiss government had been playing in the North East, particularly in reaching out to Internally Displaced Persons, had been most helpful, adding that bilateral relations between both countries will continue to be strengthened.

Responding, the Swiss Ambassador said his government will always be disposed to supporting Nigeria in ensuring peace in the country, especially in the North East.

“We have strong and solid relations with Nigeria. It’s an honour and privilege for us to contribute to issues of importance in the country,’’ he added.

He noted that he had sought and obtained God's blessings while in the holy land, stressing that he was spiritually prepared to approach the elections with focus on victory.

He stated that God who worked through the people to make him governor in 2015 would ensure his reelection in 2019, stressing that there was no cause for alarm.

Governor Ortom also charged his supporters to remain calm and be peaceful in mobilizing support for him and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates for various elective positions, pointing out that they should not react even in the face of provocation.

According to him, those working to destabilize the state using federal might would end up destabilizing themselves, noting that he and the masses of Benue were the federal might in the state and would not be intimidated.

Legit.ng gathered that the commissioner for lands, survey and solid minerals, Bernard Unenge, special adviser to the governor on politics, Mr. Saawuan Tarnongo, state PDP youth leader, Mr. Patrick Modom as well as PDP chairmen for Makurdi and Guma, led the supporters to welcome the governor.

Mass defection hits Ekiti PDP as Fayose’s political appointees numbering 500 join APC

- Not fewer than 500 PDP members defected to the ruling APC in Ekiti state

- The new defectors are elected and appointed political office holders at the local government levels under Governor Fayose

- They accused Fayose of failing to fulfil his promises to them, adding that they joined the APC because of Governor Fayemi’s leadership qualities

Mass defection has hit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti as elected and appointed political office holders at the local government levels under the immediate past government led by Ayodele Fayose on Tuesday, December 11, reportedly defected to the All Progressives Congress.

The Punch reports that the defectors numbering about 500 from across the 16 council areas of the state included political office holders during Fayose’s first and second terms in office.

Kehinde Aduloju from Ado local government spoke on behalf of the defectors at the event which was held at Government House Pavilion.

READ ALSO: Breaking: Ex-governor, 3 gubernatorial candidates defect from PDP to APC

Aduloju said their decision defect to the APC from PDP was due to Governor Kayode Fayemi’s sterling leadership qualities.

He alleged that the PDP did not really bring political dividends to them, “but empty promises under the immediate past administration”.

The former PDP chieftain, who said the occasion marked the emptying of the PDP officially, added:

“Today, bigwigs like Senator Raji Rasaki, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, Hon Adeniran Alagbada, Gboyega Aribisogan, Sunday Akinniyi, and many others are in the APC. To us, the PDP had become an empty camp with a few relevant politicians to confront the APC.

“We have nothing to fear in the APC because the way Prince Adeyeye was given the APC senatorial ticket a few days after defection shows that the APC remains a good party.”

The Ekiti state House of Assembly speaker, Adeniran Alagbada, received the defectors on behalf of the APC leadership and Fayemi.

Alagbada assured them that they would not be discriminated against as the APC operates an open door policy, which places equality in ranks and opportunities between the old and new members.

The speaker assured them that all their outstanding severance allowances since 2003 would be paid in line with the promise made by Governor Fayemi, which he said was part of the reasons for the defection.

Alagbada said: “I have spoken with Governor Fayemi, he had assured me that he would put smiles on your faces. You struggled hard under the PDP led government of Governor Fayose, but nothing was done.”

He said it is time for Atiku to lead Nigeria, stressing that all things were working towards the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate's success.

He noted that it was hypocritical and deceitful for the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government to demonize opposition members by sending anti-graft agencies after them, “only for the same people to become saints whenever they join the APC.”

Governor Ortom, who is the north-central coordinator of Atiku/Obi presidential campaign organization, tasked the women on prayers and works that would ensure the victory of PDP in all elections next year.

He acknowledged the commitment of the women to the Atiku project, saying their powerful delegation was an indication that the north-central is poised to ensure massive votes for PDP in the coming elections.

While assuring the women of the support of his administration to ensure resounding victory for Atiku, himself and other PDP candidates, Governor Ortom stated that when women are empowered, a nation benefits.

Responding, Mrs. Din said the women had fared badly in the past three years under the APC administration at the federal level and would not want to remain like that for the next four years.

She stated that they were all out to help 'change the change' by mobilising the women folk to vote out the APC government.
