Metele attack: PDP describes APC as wicked over comments on killing of soldiers

- The PDP has berated the APC over the ruling party's comments on Nigerian soldiers killed recently by Boko Haram

- The main opposition party says the comments of the APC is abhorrent, reprehensible and a slap on the sensibility of Nigerians

- The PDP said the APC, as a party, has fully demonstrated that it is a dysfunctional organisation which attaches no value to lives

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the comments of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on the killing of over 100 Nigerian soldiers by insurgents, as “abhorrent, reprehensible and a slap on the sensibility of Nigerians.”

The PDP said by the APC's stance on the killings, the party, “has fully demonstrated that it is a dysfunctional organisation which attaches no value to the lives of our soldiers or other Nigerians, but more interested in seeing funeral ceremonies and floating over the graves of its victims.”

“Why would the APC attempt to wave off revelations, which are already in the public domain, that officials of the Buhari presidency are diverting funds meant for military equipment and welfare of our soldiers to finance Mr. President's re-election campaign,” PDP's spokesman, Kola Ologbodiyan queried in a statement sent to Legit.ng on Tuesday, November 27.

He continued: “If the APC were not jittery over revelations that it is a core beneficiary of this evil racket, why is it rushing to defend the minister of defence on findings that he diverted military funds to produce campaign materials for the APC including an electronic momento, with APC logo boldly inscribed on them?

“The APC, in its hallucination, forgot that Nigerians already know that the neglect of the Buhari presidency led to the killing of our soldiers and that the president and the APC had remained unconcerned and only started shedding crocodile tears after a public outcry on the killing and their ominous silence.”

The PDP challenged the APC to explain to Nigerians why it took President Buhari, one week to react to the killings.

“Does that not portray our president as a commander who has abandoned his troops and cares less of happenings in the front?” the opposition party alleged.

The party further said it is an unpardonable assault on the sensibility of Nigerians for the APC to, “attempt to justify President Buhari's negligence and inaction toward the welfare of our soldiers as well as the diversion of military fund for Mr. President re-election campaign at the expense of the lives of Nigerians.

“If the APC is not complicit in this heinous crime against our nation, we challenge it to join the PDP in demanding for a National Assembly inquest into the killing and the handling of anti-insurgency funds under President Buhari, instead of this resort to wicked hypocritical posturing.”

The APC had earlier accused the PDP and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of, “playing desperate politics where even the blood of our fallen heroes is fair game.”

Atiku had lamented that the soldiers were killed on the day the nation’s service chiefs were attending the inauguration of President Buhari’s re-election campaign.

“Their actions are callous and insensitive to the families and dependants of the late soldiers and indeed our military which battles daily to ensure our territorial integrity.

“Nigerians see through PDP’s ploy to score political points as elections approach and it will surely backfire,” the ruling party said in a statement sent to Legit.ng on Tuesday, November 27.

2019: Why PDP cannot drag Buhari to presidential debate - Group

$

- A group has warned the opposition parties against clamouring for a presidential debate ahead of the 2019 election

- National Democratic Front said a presidential debate involving President Muhammadu Buhari is uncalled for

- According to the group, the PDP failed four consecutive presidential debate for 16-years and could not by any means drag President Buhari into its level

A pro-democracy group has warned that the opposing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cannot drag the flag bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari, to a presidential debate.

The National Democratic Front (NDF) said the clamour for a presidential debate involving President Buhari ahead of the 2019 presidential election is uncalled for.

Speaking in Abuja during a press conference, the national president of the NDF, Audu Awulu, said the insistence that President Buhari must take part in a presidential debate can be likened “to a drunk requesting for a marathon with a sprinter.”

Awulu said the PDP failed four consecutive presidential debate for 16-years and could not by any means drag President Buhari into its level.

READ ALSO: I won’t stop Nwosu, other aggrieved aspirants from leaving APC - Okorocha

He said the President Buhari had during his three and half years in office literally debated with developmental project, not media debate the opposition is clamoruing for.

According to Awulu, President Buhari has debated with projects, including those cited in geo-political zones that the PDP neglected in its wasted years.

Awulu said: “He has debated with the war on graft, which was the largest sector of the economy under the watch of the PDP, its being dismantled is in part responsible for the withdrawal symptoms that has left PDP members and chieftains writhing in agony and having multiple visions."

He further advised the PDP to bury the idea of a presidential debate with Buhari, whom they said is busy with meaningful projects that would better the nation.

“The latest of this obsessive request was from PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, who challenged President Buhari to a live debate with PDP’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. We understand that the party wants the focus of the debate to be on critical sectors in the country.

“The first impression we have of this challenge is that the brains behind the PDP have a wrong notion of what constitute a debate. Their understanding of a debate as part of a presidential election is apparently that of the raucous shouting match they engage in on local television networks, where the most strident person is adjudged the winner irrespective of whether the views they hold and expressed tallied with reality or not.

READ ALSO: Nigerian Army replies online news medium over report on killing of soldiers in Borno

“What the PDP, however, failed to realize is that the debate took place long ago and it came out the loser. The real live debate began on May 29, 1999 and the PDP had the chance to be the first speaker; the PDP had 16 whole years of four tenures to argue its point and convince Nigerians that it should remain in office for 60 years like it once hallucinated.

“In those 16 years that the PDP had to speak to Nigerians through actions it dismally flunked and dashed its own chances. They were 16 years of plundering, divisiveness, privatization of the state for individual benefits, failure to build institutions and systems while focusing on creating strong men that were more powerful than the society, they were 16 years of laying the foundation for the emergence of Boko Haram, IPOB and other toxic groups that today threaten the existence of the country.

“President Buhari with the APC have had less than four years of one tenure to the PDP’s 16 years and in that short period had debated through actions and projects on why Nigerians must never return to the Egypt of the PDP," he said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a former minister of Education and the presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Oby Ezekwesili, has called on Nigerians to insist that all aspirants for the 2019 presidential election participate in a debate.

Ezekwesili made the call at a debate in Abuja, hosted by The Osasu Show, and supported by ONE campaign, Connected Development (CODE), and YALI.

The ACPN candidate was present at the debate but the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Atiku Abubakar, sent his spokesperson, Segun Sowunmi as his representative, while President Muhammadu Buhari did not attend and didn't send any representative.

Speaking further on the Conditional Cash Transfer scheme, the vice president said, Jigawa state has the highest number of beneficiaries nationwide.

According to him, “This is the state where we have given the largest number of people, we have given 37,000 beneficiaries in this state, and every month these people receive the transfers.”

Meanwhile, the presidency has clarified that no where in the House of Representative committee on emergency and disaster preparedness report that an allegation of corruption against Osinbajo was stated.

Senator Babafemi Ojudu, the presidential political adviser, said the claims against Osinbajo from some quarters regarding the report are mere political contrivances intended to distract the vice president.

“It is evident that the opposition are in search of company for their acts of grand corruption which brought Nigeria to its knees as of May 2015. They cannot find that company in the vice president,” he noted.

- Governor Samuel Ortom has revealed the stance of Senator George Akume on Benue state's Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment law

- The governor said Senator George Akume told him not to assent to the bill before it became law

- Senator Akume recently accused the Benue state government of sponsoring armed herdsmen in the state

Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom has disclosed that Senator George Akume told him not to assent to the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment law.

Governor Ortom made the disclosure on Tuesday, November 27 at Government House, Makurdi during a joint courtesy call on him by some cultural groups and associations.

The governor explained that when he gathered Benue stakeholders in May 2017 to sign the ranching law in their presence, Senator George Akume called him aside and asked him not to assent to the law without giving any convincing reason.

PAY ATTENTION: Read best news on Nigeria's #1 news app

He noted that when he told Senator Akume to inform the stakeholders about his advice, the senator left him in anger.

The governor wondered why a senator whose constituency had suffered greater amount of human and material losses to herders' attacks would oppose a law proferring solution to the carnage and go out telling the world that his people were killing themselves.

Responding on behalf of the people of Mbalom, a leader from the area disagreed with Senator Akume over his recent comments that the two priests and 17 other worshippers were killed by Benue people and not herders.

Mr. Samuel Abagi, President of Mbalom Unity and Progress Association, while differing with Senator Akume over the claim, said their kinsmen were killed by militia herdsmen, stressing that they were in support of the ranching law of the state and the entire administration of Governor Ortom.

Meanwhile, Governor Ortom has threatened to report Senator Akume to the supreme assembly of the Tiv area traditional council over accusations that the state government is behind killings in the state.

Ortom gave the threats at Tyulen in Guma local government area on Monday, November 26, during a funeral oration at a burial ceremony he attended.

The governor noted that since the senator had chosen to tell President Muhammadu Buhari that militia herdsmen were not behind the massacre of Benue people, it implied that he has adequate knowledge about the killings and he should explain to the traditional council in detail.

Get out from my office, my people are in darkness - Governor Obaseki sends electricity distribution officers out of government house

An angry Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday, sent the managing director of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), Funke Osibodu, away from his office for leaving residents and the state in darkness for many weeks.

The Punch reports that it was a mild drama that happened while the governor was receiving members of the House of Representatives committee on power who were in the Government House on a courtesy visit.

A statement from the Edo state government, said Obaseki was surprised to see Osibodu among the lawmakers as her name was not on the list of expected guests.

READ ALSO: Nigerian Army replies online news medium over report on killing of soldiers in Borno

The governor was not also happy that he and millions of the residents had been in darkness for weeks. He made sure Osibodu left the venue.

“The BEDC has been an obstacle all the way. They will not provide electricity and will not allow you to get alternative sources of power. The state will not allow it.

“As governor of Edo State, we have lost confidence in the BEDC. We don’t want them here. We are in darkness.

“Let us remain in darkness until we find people who are capable of delivering electricity. This is our position,” Obaseki said after chasing Osibodu away.

The governor argued that the darkness is even despite the fact that the state generates about 600 to 700 megawatts of electricity.

He said the BEDC was not committed in its supposed duties.

“To assist, we set up electricity committee across the local government areas chaired by the deputy governor of the state, Rt Hon Philip Shaibu, with the BEDC as a member, to understand the challenge. But the BEDC frustrated our resolve to finding a lasting solution to the issue of providing electricity to our people,” the governor said.

In its reaction, however, the BEDC said the visit by the lawmakers, officials of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, was to give an update and help find solution to the lingering challenge.

“The BEDC continues to be a responsive and responsible distributor of electricity across the franchise states of Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti and is committed to serving its customers better.

“In addition, it is on record that out of the nine percent allocation that the BEDC gets from the national grid, Edo State gets above 40 percent, while the other three states share the balance.

“We intend to continue to work towards ensuring that various bottlenecks across the power value chain are eliminated to the benefit of our customers in all our franchise states.

“As a host community, we shall also continue to support the good people of Edo State in ensuring that an enabling environment that will create jobs and improvement in the lives of the Edo citizens is sustained.

“It should be noted that Edo state has the highest number of prepaid meters all over the country and with the introduction of meter asset provider by the NERC, we shall further accelerate the metering of consumers with effect from the first quarter of 2019 when the scheme is expected to kick off in order to rapidly reduce estimated billing,” the statement said.

Legit.ng earlier reported how Nigeria's electricity generation dropped 2,684.20 megawatts as at Monday, August 13, Punch reports.

The nation's power generation went low by 777.9 megawatts as outputs from various hydro-power plants and some gas-fired stations suffered declines.

Front-line presidential candidate, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has called on politicians to rise above partisan fray in their reactions to the recent killings of Nigeria troops in the northeast region.

Instead of politicizing the sad event, Olawepo-Hashim, rather called for a cross-party, consensual approach in dealing with the national scourge, according to a statement signed by his spokesman, Hassan Ibrahim.

He stressed that it was time politicians desist from matters that could affect national security.

“National security,” he noted, “is not supposed to be a partisan issue. It is a matter for the collective, because if there is no security, there cannot be politics and nationhood.”

He regretted the killings of Nigerian troops, observing that the troops were heroes who laid their lives protecting their fatherland.

“That fatherland should grow to be much more responsive to the needs of their offspring, as an honour to them,” he said.

The statement said the presidential candidate condoled with the government and people of Nigeria on the death of the gallant soldiers and all others who have lost their lives in recent days in different parts of the country. He prayed for the repose of their souls and for the quick recovery of the injured.

The statement added that the candidate promised to improve on the security situation in the country within 90 days if elected president in 2019.

He said: “The objective of this will be to upgrade telecommunication, military hardware, training, welfare of personnel, etc. Above all, there will be the need to address the root causes of insurgency, and security challenges such as kidnapping, communal killings, clashes between herdsmen and farmers, pipeline vandalism ,etc.”

Olawepo-Hashim however commended the reported move to assist the families of the late soldiers as timely, adding that it is consistent with international best practices.

The acting chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, recently urged the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice, Adamu Abdul-Kafarati, to transfer all the lawsuits challenging his appointment from Justice Binta Nyako.

Legit.ng gathered that the lawsuits are 11 in number and they have all been consolidated before Justice Nyako.

However, Magu, in a letter dated Tuesday, July 31, by his lawyer, Wahab Shittu, said he would love the cases taken away from Justice Nyako for fear of conflict of interest.

Magu said he was uncomfortable with Justice Nyako handling his cases at a time when the anti-graft agency was prosecuting the husband and stepson of the judge - Admiral Murtala Nyako (rtd) and Senator Abdulaziz Nyako, respectively.

Presidential candidate laments over harrasment at BON General Assembly

- Oby Ezekwesili, complained of harassment by a participant at the opening of the 71st General Assembly of BON

- The incident occurred while Ezekwesili was presenting, a keynote address at the 71st General Assembly of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON)

- The former minister lashed back at the participant who interrupted her while making her presentation

The presidential candidate of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria(ACPN) Oby Ezekwesili, on Tuesday, November 27 in Port Harcourt complained of harassment by a participant at the opening of the 71st General Assembly of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the incident occurred while, Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education and Solid Minerals was presenting, a keynote address on the theme, “Broadcasting and the Changing Media Landscape”.

Ezekwesili expressed lashed back at the participant, Yusuf Musa, the general manager of Nasarawa Radio and Television, who interrupted her while making her presentation.

READ ALSO: NDLEA arrests 2 police officers escorting 1,250 rounds of live ammunition

NAN reports that before going into her address, Ezekwesili, made off-the-cuff comments on the presentations earlier made by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission(NBC), Ishaq Modibbo-Kawu.

The Minister was represented at the event by Mr Sunday Baba, the Director of Public Relations and Protocol, in the Ministry.

Ezekwesili said: “My brother, Kawu, I listened to you with rapt attention, you are not speaking like yourself.

“You are threatening to shut down broadcasting stations. Similarly, the speech presented by the representative of the minister is also full of threat.

“This cannot happen in a democracy that we fought hard to attain. Patriotism is to support government when it deserves it and to support the people at all times. Anything that can be a hanging threat against the media must be rejected.”

At this point, Musa hectored at the guest speaker, asking her to go straight to her paper rather than making comments and “embarrassing” the minister and NBC DG over their speeches.

Ezekwesili who was not pleased with the interjection by Musa said: “A gentleman is shouting at me there, that is typical of an overzealous person, telling a fellow Nigerian to shut up”

“Forget about our very animated government official who is defending the government.

“We know them, when the current administration is over, they will sing a new song”.

While the altercation continued, Ezekwesili, added, “You were not invited here to the podium, I am. Please let me go into my presentations”.

Musa said after the programme that he interrupted Ezekwesili because she left the presentation she was asked to make to attack the DG, NBC and the Minister.

“She is someone I admire so much because of her contributions to national development but I am not pleased with the way she attacked the NBC over the plan to sanction erring stations”.

Earlier, Modibbo Kawu cautioned radio and TV stations that the NBC would not hesitate to sanction erring stations, as the country enters the season of heightened political activities, en route the 2019 general elections.

“For us at the NBC, we cannot be responsible for the statements that politicians make.

“It is important to remind the broadcasting outfits in BON, that you would be liable for any violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code by the politicians that you broadcast live during political rallies.

“So it is your responsibility, not just to collect those huge sums politicians are willing to pay; but you must make them remember the liability you carry for decency in what comes out on radio and television.

Kawu also said that the NBC would not hesitate to shut down any station who failed to pay its licensing fees to the NBC.

He said many broadcasting organisations had refused to pay regularly.

The minister on his part urged the media to be agents of unity, stability and not to allow themselves to be used as fake news purveyors during the campaign for 2019 general elections.

In a previous report by Legit.ng, Oby Ezekwesili, the presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), has said President Muhammadu Buhari has not been an ‘effective’ Commander-in-Chief in handling security challenges the country is facing, especially Boko Haram insurgency.

The former minister of education on Friday, November 23, in an interview said: “The president has not been an effective Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces.

He has not been! We cannot have any group whatsoever by whatever name feel this level of freedom to operate in our territory without the decisiveness of action that would end these monumental tragedies that we face all the time.”

I rejected my breakfast because my wife refused to kneel down for me - Nigerian man

A Nigerian man identified as Oniyangi Abdullahi Badmus has set the internet on fire with the story of how he rejected his wife's prepared meal because she did not get on her knees while serving him.

It is possible that the Facebook user was just joking, however, in Nigeria such practices are real where women are subjected to pressure of 'worshiping' their husbands or risk being tagged a disrespectful wife.

Badmus' post immediately went viral because many people could relate with such behaviour. There are men out there who would rather stay hungry and disregard their wife's effort in the kitchen for such apparent flimsy reason.

After all, it is in the same country that some men expect that a wife material can be measured by how much she spends on a pot of soup. In fact, it has become a trend on social media and every other day, someone is boasting of spending N500 or less in making a delicious pot of soup.

Abdullahis' post is getting a lot of hit, first he shared the photo of a mouth-watering meal but revealed that he rejected such delicacy because his wife did not kneel down before him while she served it.

Read his post below:

I rejected my breakfast because my wife refused to kneel down for me - Nigerian man

On a more serious note, many women live with this reality and even think it normal as they've been socially conditioned to see their husbands as lord and masters.

It is probably why Nigerian social media feminists are so angry. Some of their opinions can be described as straight from the gutter but their anger might not be completely misplaced.

Truth be told, there are various forms of domestic violence and emotional torture and verbal abuse are part of it. Just recently, a domestic violence survivor, Mercy Makinde shared before and after photos of herself while she lived through hell and back.
