- Jose Mourinho takes a dig at his critics after his side qualified into the last 16

- Man United defeated Young Boys by 1-0 in a tense match played at Old Trafford

- Mourinho has qualified all the teams he has managed into the UCL second round

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has hit back at his critics after the Red Devils made it through into the next stage of the Champions League.

Mourinho took great joy in making his 'lovers' aware of his impressive run of qualifying into the knock out phase of the competition.

The Portuguese manager has come under huge criticisms for his side's shaky start to the 2018-19 season.

Maroune Fellaini's late winner ensured United's passage into the round of 16 after the game seemed to be ending in frustration.

On the other hand, Mourinho has never failed to progress into the second round of the Champions League with all the teams he has managed.

He told BT Sport after delivering another knockout berth: “For some of my lovers, I just want to say, for the ones that like stats – 14 seasons in the Champions League, 14 times qualified through the group phase.

“Never one of my teams stay behind in the group phase.

“The season I didn’t play Champions League, I won the Europa League. It’s a good record.”

The Special One has won the competition with FC Porto and Inter Milan as well as guiding United to Europa League glory in 2016-17.

Mourinho is proud of his team joining leaders Juventus into the next round of the competition.

“That's good, very difficult group, to qualify with one match is obviously good,” he said after seeing Fellaini make dominance count against Young Boys on Tuesday.

“The performance had lots of good things but lots of disappointing things. This is the kind of game if you score in the first minute you go for a different kind of performance.

“You could pay with not just a defeat. David's save, the only save in the game, was phenomenal, only the best goalkeeper in the world can save.

“More than one chance. We had what I call half chances a lot, when the winger has the ball and 20 metres to attack but has the fear of the penalty from the defender he has to go by him. We can't blame one player.

“The most important thing is a goal. Of course I'm happy with the intensity the boys put in, it's not difficult to cope with the pressure of a result that doesn't suit us.”

The Red Devils will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to St Mary's to take on Southampton.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Manchester United sealed their place into the round of the Champions League with a slim 1-0 win over Young Boys.

Maurone Fellaini's 91st minute strike was all United needed to join leaders Juventus in the next round.

- Bianca Ojukwu wants Victor Oye, the national chairman of APGA, to resign from the political position

- Bianca claims that Oye's continued stay as the APGA national chairman will end the party's existence and relevance

- He reminds the members of the party that APGA is one of the legacy projects left by her husband for the Ndigbo

Bianca, the wife of the late Igbo leader, Odumegwu Ojukwu, has asked the national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Oye, to resign from his position as he will not be allowed to destroy the party.

Bianca Ojukwu said Oye needed to immediately resign following alleged scandalous primaries conducted by the party.

READ ALSO: Nigerian Army replies online news medium over report on killing of soldiers in Borno

She warned that if Oye is allowed to continue as national chairman of APGA, then the party, which she called one of the legacies left for Ndigbo by the late Biafra warlord, would be destroyed.

Daily Sun reports that Bianca spoke in Owerri, Imo state, during the seventh year commemoration of the death of the late Ojukwu, organised by the founder and leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Biafra Independent Movement (BIM).

“Will children who killed their mother inside the house built by the late father be praised? As if that was not enough, they came to Imo and did the worst; and, after duping them of their money, they foisted stranger on them as their candidate. Can a people who committed such act of perfidy be commended.

“So, Oye must resign as the national leader of the party, immediately, because remaining as the chairman is a slap on the faces Ndigbo.

“Chief Victor Oye cannot desecrate the legacies of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and still remain the chairman. If he refuses to resign, then, the Almighty God will remove him, because the Egyptians you see today, you will see no more.

“He must refund all the money he illegally collected from all the aspirants for various positions before selling their tickets to the highest bidder,” she said.

Legit.ng reported that Uche Onyeagucha, a former governorship aspirant of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Imo state, also criticised Victor Oye for allegedly threatening to expel Bianca Ojukwu from the party.

Onyeagucha, in a statement, said it was embarrassing for such threat to be associated with Victor Oye, who he accused of being the reason for most of the crisis in the party.

He said this during the delivery of the 10th convocation lecture of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun state.

Oloyede remarked that when Kemi Adeosun, the former finance minister, called on him to generate N200 million or N300 million, he said he was at first frightened because of the past record of JAMB in terms of remittance.

In the lecture, titled For whom much is expected, enough should be given: Making a case for Nigerian teacher, Oloyede identified corruption as one strong obstacle to sufficiency of resources for progress in the country.

He said: “In terms of corruption, I have seen how very wicked we are against one another in this country. I don’t even respect many people with big cars because I have information about them.

“After my appointment, the Minister of Education called me and said from information available you should be able to generate N500 million for the Federal Government.

“The former Minister for Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, who is also from Ogun State, also called me and said your office should be able to give us N300 million or N200 million. I was really wondering how this was going to work given the past record of JAMB.

“I am, however, surprised that JAMB had N9 billion left for the Federal Government. In fact, I could not sleep, I will again go and check to ensure there were no error anywhere. Look at what this huge amount will do to our economy.”

He said that informed why he was of the strongest view that the ongoing fight against corruption must be sustained and supported by Nigerians to get things working again in the country.

Oloyede referred to teachers in Nigeria as the worst paid in the world, adding that the federal, state and local governments should deal with the issue for increased productivity.

He said: “Education is everything as without it, there is nothing. It appears evident that we may continue to drift on uncharted seas as long as society pay pittance to its moulders, the teachers.

Home is the 'most dangerous' place for women - UN

$

- A UN report has revealed that women across the world are more vulnerable to gender-based violence when they are at home

- UNODC executive director, Yury Fedotov, revealed that 87,000 female homicide cases were recorded in 2017, of which 58% were committed by relatives of the victims

- The body suggested that drastic judiciary reforms and orientation of men would contribute to curbing of the crime

A recent shocking study by the United Nations (UN) has revealed that more than half of female murder victims in 2017 were killed by their partners or family members, thus making home the most dangerous place for women across the world.

Time reports that the bewildering revelation was made by UN's office on drugs and crime on Sunday, November 25, to mark the international day for the elimination of violence against women.

Legit.ng gathers from the report that 87,000 female homicide cases were recorded in 2017 alone, with 50,000 or 58% of the murders committed by the victims’ intimate partners or family members.

READ ALSO: NAIJ.com upgrades to Legit.ng: a letter from our Editor-in-Chief Bayo Olupohunda

The report also stated that at least six women were killed every hour, or 137 killed every day by people they know in 2017.

UNODC executive director, Yury Fedotov, in the report stated that women are always at the receiving end of gender inequality in the global community.

She said: “Women continue to pay the highest price as a result of gender inequality, discrimination and negative stereotypes."

“The fact that women continue to be affected by this type of violence to a greater degree than men is indicative of an imbalance in power relations between women and men inside the domestic sphere.”

The report also claimed that Asia has the highest total number of female homicides in 2017 with 20,000 cases recorded, adding that the rate of intimate partner or family murder was comparatively low at 0.9 murders per 100,000 women.

The UN report also added that by comparison, the highest rates of intimate partner or family murder in Africa was at the range of 3.1 murders per 100,000 women, while it was 1.6 in America.

Calling for collective measure against the rampant development, UN suggested that instituting domestic violence early intervention programs, educating men and encouraging criminal justice reform, would have a long way in eradicating the gender-based violence attitude.

It concluded: "Many women still find themselves alone, not only in the face of violence in their home but also of criminal justice systems that fail to respond adequately."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a famous women empowerment advocate in Nigeria, Mercy Makinde, had taken to her Instagram page to narrate how she was a victim of domestic violence.

In her post, she disclosed that the gender-based violence happened to her about 12 years ago. Makinde said that she was one of the few ones to be alive, adding that Nigerians were not ready to stand up against the menace.

The award winning women empowerment advocate also lamented the rate at which religion allowed cases of violence against women sweep to forgetfulness under its watch.

- The viral video showing Governor Umar Ganduje receiving money from contractors is still generating reactions

- Ganduje's predecessor, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, has spoken on the video for the first time

- According to Kwankwaso, he did everything within his power to ensure the videos were not released to the public

Former governor of Kano state, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Tuesday, November 27, said he was aware of the viral video showing Governor Umar Ganduje receiving money from some contractors.

Kwankwaso who is Ganduje's predecessor said he did everything possible to stop the release to the public to no avail.

The former governor who is the current senator representing Kano central senatorial district, stated this on a live programme on Aminchi FM in Kano.

He said he pleaded with the publisher of the online newspaper, Daily Nigerian, which released the video, but noted that they refused to heed his plea.

His words: “I was aware of the video clips before they were released to the public and I pleaded that they should not be released, but they didn’t listen to me.

“I am not happy that the video clips were made public because it is an embarrassment to the state and its people, including myself.”

The videos which were recorded in 2017, were made public last month. The governor was accused of collecting $5 million described as bribe from some contractors operating in the state, who were said to be behind the videos leakage.

The governor reacted immediately, denying collecting money from any contractor, even as he said it was a calculated attempt to impugn his person.

The Kano state House of Assembly thereafter summoned the publisher of the online newspaper, Jaafar Jaafar, to appear before an ad hoc committee set up to investigate the incident and submit clips of the video, which he did.

The governor was then invited by the committee, after he had threatened to sue the online newspaper.

Ganduje, however, failed to appear before the committee, but instead sent his information commissioner, Mohammed Garba, to stand in for him.

He later sued the online newspaper for N3 billion, despite earlier intervention by the House of Assembly that he should not do so.

We were short changed, our allowances withheld - 139 Nigerian UN peacekeepers accuse police

- Some Nigerian UN peacekeepers who served in Mali have cried out over ill-treatment they allegedly experience from the hands of the police force

- The policemen claimed that they were short changed and that their allowances were withheld by the force

- They also alleged that their military counterparts who served alongside with them in Mali were paid their allowances in full

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has been accused of holding on to the allowances of about 139 officers who recently returned from the United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Mali.

The officers were part of the UN police unit which served in Timbuktu from October 2017, to September 2018. They also took part in police duties during the Malian presidential polls in July, 2018. The aggrieved policemen confirmed to newsmen that they were short changed, Punch reports.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Monday, November 26, the officers claimed that they served in the mission for 13 months, but were only paid their allowances for seven months.

The aggrieved policemen revealed that some Nigerian soldiers who took part in the mission were paid their allowances in full before they left Mali back in October, 2018.

According to reports, each member of the police contingent was entitled to $1,600 monthly apart from $200 or CFA 20,000 for cigarettes.

The policemen expressed fears that their allowances might not be paid by the police peacekeeping department following the delay in the release of the money by the force headquarters.

An affected officer who is also a serving police inspector disclosed: “Before we left Abuja for Mali, the department assured us that all our allowances had been paid by the UN. When we arrived in Timbuktu, we were paid $4,939.7 for October-December, 2017.

“In January, we were paid $1,406:30 and by the time we were leaving Bamako in October after concluding the mission, the military personnel among us had received their full 13 months allowances.

“When we arrived at the Force Headquarters, the Director of Peace-keeping Department, DCP Abubakar Sadiq informed us on October 12 that our allowances were being delayed because the UN said our equipment failed inspection.

“He assured us that we would be paid the six months allowances, but we received only $3,494.30 which was about $1,500 short of the allowances for three months.”

So far, the director of peacekeeping department, DCP Abubakar Sadiq and the force's public relations officer, DCP Moshood Jimoh, have not given any detailed report on the development.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved Enhanced Salary Structure for the NPF.

The president made the declaration after meeting with members of the Police Service Commission (PSC) on Monday, November 26, at the State House, Abuja.

President Buhari met with the board of PSC, led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris. In a series of tweets by Garba Shehu, the SSA on media and publicity, President Buhari said that his administration would continue to give attention to the welfare and operational needs of the NPF with a view to restoring its lost primacy in the internal security framework of the country.

- A group of female friends are being celebrated after they achieved their dreams

- The seven friends qualified as medical doctors from the University of the Free State

Seven female friends Moliehi Mareka, Mahlatse Mothiba, Tshepang Motete, Thato Mosehle, Toni Motseoile, Lungile Mkhungo and Lijeng Lefosa are being celebrated in South Africa after they achieved their dreams flawlessly.

The young ladies graduated from the University of the Free State as medical doctors. The seven friends have chosen to follow a career path in the public sector despite the fact that public sector doctors work long hours.

In an interview with TimesLIVE, the young ladies expressed that they are ready to bring about change in the public sector. The ladies started off as classmates and later became friends in 2015.

24-year-old Tshepang Motete said: “We are prepared for anything and everything; our MBChB prepared us for the worst. We are confident that we will be able to handle whatever comes our way.”

Motete further expressed that she was proud to be the first person to become a doctor in her family. She said: “The fact that I wasn’t born in a family of professionals really played a huge role ... because I took a decision to say I’d push against all odds.”

She also said: “In our class there were probably 130 students, with only nine black girls, so we grew closer because we could relate to each other.”

The 24-year-old also talked about how she had to adapt to the transition after studying in rural schools that lack resources.

She said: “It wasn’t easy to adapt to so many changes, for example, we had to use technological devices a lot. Staying at the university’s residence really made a difference because senior students were there to help us.”

23-year-old Thato Mosehle also revealed that she is the first qualified doctor in her family. She talked about her hopes for the future.

Mosehle said: “I believe our programme prepared us for anything really. However, I am just concerned about stereotypes among our people. There are patients who would prefer an older (nursing) sister over a young doctor. There are males who prefer to be attended to by other males, but I am strong enough to handle all that.”

The lady expressed that she choose to become a doctor because black doctors are rare in her community. She said: “I didn’t only see a lack of doctors in my community, but a lack of black doctors, generally.”

She added that her mothers wishes to have had the opportunity to study made her work harder. She said: "That motivated me to grab the opportunity with both hands because I am young.”

The ladies wish to make a difference tin the health sector. Mosehle said: "Giving back and serving our communities is something really close to us.”

They are set to officially graduate on Thursday, December 6.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported the story of a young man who gave thanks as he graduated from UNIBEN after doing his West African Examination seventeen times before he passed.

National Assembly to blame for delay in execution of rail projects - Amaechi

- Rotimi Amaechi, the minister of transportation, appears before the Senate committee investigating the alleged abandonment of the eastern rail lines in the railway revitalisation projects across the country

- The minister says the federal government has no plans to exclude the southeast region from the rail project

- Amaechi states that limited funds have forced the federal government to adopt a systematic approach in the project execution

Rotimi Amaechi, the minister of transportation, has said that the National Assembly’s refusal to allow government access to a $30bn foreign loan facility is responsible for delaying the complete overhaul of the country’s railway network.

The minister of transportation made the claim when he appeared before the Senate joint committees on land transport and foreign and local debts, which is investigating the alleged abandonment of the eastern rail lines in the rail revitalisation projects across the country, This Day reports.

Amaechi noted that the federal government has no plan to exclude the southeast region from the rail project, noting that the region was already captured in the 2018 borrowing plans of the federal government.

“The president insists on rule of law and the law passed by the National Assembly in terms of public procurement is very tedious and not easy to conclude; it takes a very long time. Similarly the law passed by the National Assembly on the Bureau for Public Procurement is very tedious,” Amaechi said.

PAY ATTENTION: NAIJ.com upgrades to Legit.ng: a letter from our Editor-in-Chief Bayo Olupohunda

The minister noted that limited funds had forced the federal government to adopt a systematic approach in the rail project execution.

“We have met with both General Electric, GE and the consortium handling the project for nearly two years now and we are still on it even as the first firm as handed over to TRANSNET, meaning, Transport Network . Let me make it clear, the country does not have the resources to do railway in every village. It is not possible. $2.7 billion is N1 trillion,” Amaechi said.

Meanwhile, the confirmation of Olanipekun Olukoyede as secretary of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been suspended by the Senate.

A member of the Senate committee on anti-corruption and financial crimes, Isa Misau, had earlier accused the committee of preparing a report without the consent of others, Premium Times reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the lawmaker complained that the endorsement page report was signed by only three out of eight members of the committee.

4 of the best teams that failed to win the Champions League at their peak

$

Predicting the winning team at the start of a season can be extremely challenging due to the quality of businesses clubs engage in during summer transfer window. In certain domestic leagues, the result can sometimes be a formality based on the strength of the champions compared to the rest of the league – think of Juventus in Serie A and Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga for the last few years.

However, predicting the winners of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) is a different proposition altogether.

1. Arsenal 2003/ 2004

Arsene Wenger’s Invincibles were arguably the strongest English Premier League (EPL) side ever after going unbeaten all through the season.

The were also adjudged to have played one of the most beautiful football ever seen in the history of the league.

The Gunners were the favourites to win the Champions League during the 2003/ 2004 campaign but blew their chances at the end of the season.

READ ALSO: Jose Mourinho confident David De Gea will sign new Man United deal

After struggling in the group stage, they eventually qualified but lost to Chelsea in the quarter-finals.

2. Chelsea 2004/ 2005

Chelsea became a force to reckon with since the arrival of Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho from Porto.

He guided his team to a host of records during the term, including the highest points haul (95) and fewest goals conceded (15) back then.

Many people therefore tipped them as favourites for the UCL but they continuously came up against top quality opposition.

PAY ATTENTION: Become a member of the leading sports Facebook group 'Naija Football Fan Zone'

They bravely navigated their way past Barcelona and Bayern Munich but met their match against Liverpool in the semi-final.

Luis Garcia’s ‘ghost goal’ saw the Reds beating the Blues. It still haunts Mourinho to this day.

3. Juventus 1996 – 1999

Many believe the Old Lady have an European curse of some sort following their disappointing losses in 3 finals.

During the period between 1996 and 1999, Juve boasted the best team in Italy at a time when Italian football was at its peak.

The Milan clubs were the glamour boys of Europe boasting some of the finest talents in the world.

Juventus combined a brilliant coach in Marcello Lippi with world-class players such as, Zinedine Zidane, Edgar Davids, Didier Deschamps and Christian Vieri.

READ ALSO: NAIJ.com upgrades to Legit.ng

During the 1997 final, they were hot favourites to brush aside a plucky Dortmund side but the Germans prevailed and caused one of the biggest UCL upsets ever.

Juve were undone again in the final the following year as they lost to Real Madrid.

Incredibly, the star-studded team blew another chance for European glory the year after in 1999 when they were beaten by the treble-winning Manchester United team.

4. Barcelona 1993 – 1996

Johan Cruyff is known as one of the legends of the game.

A player with unbelievable pedigree, he achieved even greater acclaim as a coach for his forward-thinking philosophies.

He is largely credited with transforming Barcelona into a global super power and for instilling the rich, attractive brand of football.

His team were fondly known as the ‘Dream Team’ as they dominated La Liga on 4 consecutive occasions between 1991 to 1994.

Boasting the likes of Romario, Ronald Koeman and Hristo Stoichkov, the Catalans were primed for European success as well.

Incredibly, Cruyff’s great team just couldn’t cut the mustard in the UCL.

Although they won the European Cup during the 1991/ 1992 campaign, they weren’t able to replicate that success in the newly branded tournament format.

- Comrade Ayuba Wabba accuses the federal government of trying to politicise the minimum wage agreement reached for workers

- Wabba, the president of NLC, notes that the organised labour does not have any issue with the private sector over the agreement

- The labour leader accuses the federal government of not having any genuine interest in the agreement

The president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba, on Tuesday, November 27, declared that the federal government was politicizing the agreements they reached over the proposed new national minimum wage.

Wabba, who spoke in Bayelsa, reportedly said the government was denying the proposed new national minimum wage, while the private sector was cooperating on the issue.

Daily Trust reports that Wabba spoke during the opening session of the 2018 meeting of the joint national public service negotiating council.

According to the NLC president, the government’s attitude was devoid of genuine interests.

“Private sectors have actually displaced the public sector in industrial relation and collective bargaining role model, our experiences during the negotiations for the new minimum wage showed that the employers in the private sectors are more forthcoming and forthright, moving negotiation forward to mutual acceptable figure, while government continues to live in denial and even stop the conclusion for the negotiation," he said.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) recently told President Buhari to take urgent steps to address the issue of the new national minimum wage by immediately forwarding an executive bill to the National Assembly to legalise the recommendation of the tripartite committee.

Comrade Ayuba Wabba said Nigerian workers were running out of patience with the government over the delay and we’re getting more and more agitated.

A coalition of 400 civil rights organisations under the aegis of Transition Monitoring Group also recently advised Nigerian workers to use it as a bargaining tool for the 2019 general elections.

Punch reports that the group expressed concern over the irregular payment of salaries by state governments, describing it as “a recipe to vote-buying and threat to free and fair elections in 2019.”
