Boko Haram: House of Reps begins investigation into $1bn arms procurement, demand release of dead soldiers’ names

Nigeria’s House of Representatives, on Tuesday, November 27, commenced investigation into the $1 billion appropriated for procurement of arms and equipment in the fight against Boko Haram in the north east.

The members of the lower chamber of the National Assembly also demanded that the Nigerian Army should, after due consultations with families of soldiers killed in the Nov. 18, insurgents’ attack in Metele village in Borno, release all their names.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the resolution by the members was sequel to a motion by Chukwuka Onyema (PDP-Anambra) at the plenary presided over by Speaker Yakubu Dogara in Abuja.

Onyema, who is the deputy minority leader of the House, lamented that many Nigerian soldiers of the 157 battalion were massacred by Boko Haram insurgents, who now called themselves Islamic State West Africa, in Metele in Borno state.

The lawmaker said the initial casualty figure was at 44 but as more details emerged, it is now confirmed that many more soldiers and officers were killed together with their commanding officer, Lt Col Ibrahim Sakaba, while others are still missing.

“The House notes that according to reports, the insurgents carted away large consignment of weapons from the Melete army base which security experts say would embolden them and pose great danger.

“The House observed that while the news of the attack and death toll continued to increase, neither the President nor the minister of defense or the army authorities said anything about the report as there was silence for more than five days.

“The House notes that the president and C-In-C finally broke his silence six days after the attack in a statement issued on his behalf,” he said lamenting further that it was unfortunate that in the last one year, no fewer than 600 Nigerian soldiers were killed by insurgents, mostly in Borno state around the fringes of the Lake Chad.

“The House recalls that twice in three years, the Commander-In-Chief gave directives to service chiefs to permanently relocate to the Theatre Command Centre in Maiduguri until Boko Haram is defeated,” he said adding that it was disheartening that with the recent happenings in the north, all the successes and gains made against the insurgents had been reversed.

In his contribution, Nnenna Ukeje (PDP-Abia) said it was high time Nigeria began to change tactics in order to checkmate the audacity of the insurgents.

According to her, the federal government to take a cue from Pakistan and review the curriculum of its military.

On his part, Aminu Shagari (PDP-Sokoto), who queried how the recently appropriated money was used, described the attack as sad while Beni Lar (PDP-Plateau) called for the sack of the service chiefs.

Also, Idris Ease (APC-Plateau) called on the House to treat the matter dispassionately and not to be affected by political sentiment while Rimande Shawulu (PDP-Taraba) recalled that last year, there were reports that about 6, 000 members of the Islamic State in Syria (ISIS) found their ways to the sub-Saharan Africa.

In his view, Speaker, Mr Dogara, after over an hour deliberation on the motion, described the development as an eye-opener.

The speaker argued that it was time the leadership in the country began to take responsibility and not to apportion blame.

The motion was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers.

The House then set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate all funds appropriated for utilisation by the Armed Forces for the fight against insurgency was set up by the House.

The committee has a duty to look into the operational lapses that led to the killings of the soldiers.

Legit.ng earlier reported how Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack of all the nation’s service chiefs, because of the recent killing of over 100 soldiers by the Boko Haram insurgents in Melete, Borno state.

Afenifere made its demand on Tuesday, November 27, in Akure, Ondo state after its monthly meeting. The group slammed federal government for reportedly being indifferent and insensitive to the killings by the insurgents.

2019: Why Atiku may not get southeast’s votes - Igbo youth group

$
0
0

- An Igbo youth group, Ohanaeze Youth Council, has asked the PDP presidential candidate to specify the number of terms he intends to spend if elected

- The group said the only condition for the southeast to support Atiku Abubakar presidency is if he commits himself to just one term

- It insisted that the 2013 Igbo presidency project must be achieved, adding that any southeast governor that betrays the cause will be voted out

Ohanaeze Youth Council on Tuesday, November 27, reportedly urged the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) to state in clear terms the number of terms he intends to spend if elected in the 2019 general elections.

The youth group in a statement by its secretary general, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said Atiku’s six years master plan is suspicious as it seems like a ploy by the PDP candidate to go for a second tenure, The Nation reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the youths argued that the presidency is supposed to be given to the southeast in 2023 adding that Atiku may not get southeast’s votes if he does not make a pledge to go for only one tenure.

“OYC had studied dilligently the six-year plan of Atiku Abubakar policy to make Nigeria work again as a good document but insists that Atiku must make a categorical statement that he will only seek for one tenure to convince Ndigbo that his six-year policy statement is not intention of seeking the second term against 2023 Igbo presidency project,” the group said.

The group urged the people of the southeast geopolitical zone to put their house in order before next year’s general election to avoid what happened in 2003 election in the southwest where the opposition governors under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) agreed to vote for Obasanjo and later lost their seats.

The youths threatened to vote out any governor in the southeast who betrays the Igbo cause.

“As Igbo watchdogs, we believe that irrespective of our support for southeast governors seeking second term, we will vote out any governor who betrayed the Igbo interest and agenda which will be decided by January 2019. We call agitators to join hands to retire some Igbo politicians who had consistently betrayed our collective interest because of our apathy towards voting.

“OYC insists that southeast and Igbo votes across the 36 states including Abuja will be the swinging votes that help who will emerge victorious in the 2019 presidential election, and major contenders know about this reality.

“OYC had studied diligently the six year plan of Atiku Abubakar policy to make Nigeria work again as a good document but insists that Atiku must make a categorical statement that he will only seek for one tenure to convince Ndigbo that his six year policy statement is not intention of seeking second term against 2023 Igbo presidency project,” the statement read.

Obi made the statement on Monday, November 26, when speaking on a Channels TV show, Sunrise Daily.

He said the aim of the opposition is to form a government that would make the people independent and productive.

Earlier, Legit.ng shared photos from the dedication of world's largest church auditorium located in Abuja, Nigeria. The auditorium is said to be a 100,000 seater capacity building owned by Dunamis International Gospel Center, a church headed by Paul Idoko Enenche.

Many Nigerians have reacted to the church building including leader of Free The Sheeple Movement, Daddy Freeze who stated that opening the largest Pentecostal business center in the world, is shameful and hypocritical especially when it comes from the poverty capital of the world.

The head of pastor of Dunamis church, Pastor Enenche has reportedly responded to the critics who believe erecting such a building when Nigeria needs better significant infrastructures is misguided. He apparently slammed all those who have come out to say something against the apparent good work of the Lord.

He said: "I heard some very highly irrelevant, insignificant, infinitesimal, microscopic piece of materials that are only relevant for census purposes, who only hang on the internet to talk against people. They have not achieved anything and will never achieve anything for life, would be remembered for nothing".

A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Arthur Eze, has urged people in Ebonyi to re-elect the state governor, David Umahi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for his outstanding performance.

He said that the achievements recorded by Umahi’s current administration indicated that he would do more if given another chance to rule the state, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

According to Eze, who was a guest of the state government, Umahi has exhibited total commitment to the development of Ebonyi.

“Umahi has been the state chairman of PDP; he has been the deputy governor and when it was time for him to succeed the former governor, Chief Martin Elechi, I met former president Goodluck Jonathan to allow Umahi to become the governor.

“I told the former president that I don’t know the former minister for health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, who was Elechi’s preferred candidate.

“I am happy that Governor Umahi has shown deep commitment for the development of Ebonyi.

“Ebonyi has been transformed overnight and new things have started coming to the state. I want Ebonyi people to vote for David Umahi in 2019.

“He has performed well and we have to appreciate him by supporting his re-election. I am convinced that with his achievements in his first tenure, he will do more in his second term,” he said.

Eze said that the governor had not disappointed him in the provision of infrastructure and qualitative leadership since he assumed office.

He said that he stood for Umahi’s emergence in 2015 because he believed that the governor was the best candidate to succeed the former governor, Elechi.

During the visit, Eze had performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of an overhead bridge at Abomege junction in Abakaliki and reconstruction and remodelling of Margaret Umahi International Market among others.

In his remarks, Governor Umahi said that Eze had been instrumental to his achievements since he became the governor through his assistance and advice for the development of the state.

The governor described the business mogul as a “worthy son of Ndigbo’’, and said that he would remain eternally grateful to him because of his generosity to Nigerians.

He prayed God to continue to keep him alive as the philanthropist celebrated his 70th birthday.

Eze is the chancellor of Ebonyi State University and holds the traditional title of “Dike Eji-eji Mba 1” conferred on him by Ebonyi state traditional rulers.

Aggrieved aspirants may join another party to realise their ambitions - Okorocha gives hint of mass defection in Imo APC

$

- Governor Okorocha gave hints that aggrieved APC members in the state may join another party to realise their ambitions

- The governor, however, said that he remains an APC member and will contest the senatorial election under the party

- He added that while the aggrieved members main join another party, they will all vote for President Muhammadu Buhari

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has reportedly hinted that his former chief of staff, Uche Nwosu, and all those aggrieved aspirants in the aftermath of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election, might join another party to realise their ambitions, saying that he won’t stop them.

Nwosu, Governor Okorocha’s son-in-law, contested the party’s governorship ticket but lost to Senator Hope Uzodinma in a controversial circumstance.

Daily Trust reports that no fewer than 27 members of Imo state House of Assembly and National Assembly aspirants, including Nwosu, who felt aggrieved from the conduct the party’s primaries, may be heading to another party before the substitution window closes.

READ ALSO: 2019: APC chieftain endorses Ebonyi governor for 2nd term

The embattled governor, however, reiterated that while he will support their aspirations, he remained in APC and would contest the Orlu senatorial election under the party.

He maintained that Nwosu and all the aggrieved candidates remained his choices and will get his support under any platform they chose to realise their ambitions.

Speaking at a media briefing in Owerri, Okorocha insisted that Nwosu, under whatever platform remained his preferred governorship candidate, describing the emergence of the APC governorship candidate, Senator Hope Uzodinma as the “worst imposition in Nigerian political history”.

He gave an assurance that he and his followers will deliver their votes for President Muhammadu Buhari and at the presidential election and vowed to deal with any of them who disobeyed him.

His words: “What will happen is that while they move to realise their ambition under any other platform, I remain in APC and support them. Such party will have no presidential candidate but will adopt President Muhammadu Buhari as their candidate.

“What we saw in Imo APC was a clear case of injustice and the worst imposition in history. The party members are aggrieved and they will be moving to another party to pursue their ambitions and I am not going to stop them, but we are going to form alliance with whichever party they choose to deliver President Buhari”.

“In the 2019 general election, we are going to vote for candidates and not political parties. I am in the best position to assess the candidates and I know that among all the governorship candidates, Nwosu remains the best. I have told Imo people to check the records of those clamouring to govern the state before voting for them.

“What is happening in Imo APC is interesting and strange, a party known for uprightness, justice and fairness has exemplified by President Muhammadu Buhari, has been dented by the actions of the national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole for whatever reasons he is yet to disclose.

“I have been trying to manage the situation but I have no moral justification to stop the aggrieved candidates who felt short-changed from realizing their ambitions in any other party but I have not left APC and do not intend to leave APC. But you must realize that in Imo we don’t play party politics but politics of individuals. People did not join APC because of anybody but because of me”.

Okorocha lamented that Imo people were short-changed by the three major political parties – APC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – in their choice for governorship candidates, saying that all of them were imposed on the people.

You have just lied - Nigerian Army comes for Sahara Reporters over claim concerning recent attack on soldiers in Borno

- The Nigerian Army denies claims that the bodies of the slain soldiers in Borno state have not been evacuated days after the attack

- The Army says it constituted a team led by a senior officer to carry out the evacuation of the killed soldiers

- The security body says the team searched everywhere around the scene of the incident and ensured that every dead soldier was evacuated

The Nigerian Army, late Tuesday, November 27, accused online news medium, Sahara Reporters, of carrying out a smear campaign against it in the heat of the attack on at least 100 soldiers by the Boko Haram insurgents.

The Nigerian Army urged the members of the public to discredit the news from the medium that the bodies of the murdered soldiers had not been evacuated days after the incident at Melete in Borno state.

In the statement, the Nigerian Army said it carried out a reinforcement to the location immediately after the attack and that a special search and rescue team led by a senior officer was constituted.

The team, the statement said, searched the entire location and evacuated all those who were killed in the attack

Read the full statement:

1. The attention of the Nigerian Army (NA) has once again been drawn to another false publication by an online newspaper (Sahara Reporters), alleging that the bodies of our gallant soldiers and members of Civilian Joint Task Force who lost their lives in the unfortunate Metele Attack are yet to be evacuated.

2. The general public is to please note that the information is despicably false and a calculated attempt to spread fake news aimed at discrediting and undermining the NA in the discharge of its constitutional roles. For the avoidance of doubt, immediately after the attack, reinforcement was sent to the location. Thereafter, a special search and rescue team led by a senior military officer was constituted and equally dispatched. The team worked tirelessly, searching all the nooks and crannies of the general area and have evacuated all the gallant troops that paid the supreme price in defence of their fatherland.

3. It is sad to note that in a bid to be seen as first to break news, some media houses have discarded the ethics of their noble profession through the hasty publication of unverified information. The NA would once again reiterate the need for correct and balanced reportage especially when reporting issues regarding military operations. Furthermore, all print and electronic (online) newspapers as well as social media forums and blogs are advised to double check their information before publishing. This is because publishing false, sensational news is inimical to national security and could also cause panic, bitterness and disunity among the citizenry.

Legit.ng earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari cancelled his planned five-day “casual leave’’ as a mark of respect for victims of Boko Haram attacks across the battlefields in the northeast zone of the country.

Real Madrid secured a 2-0 win over Roma on Tuesday, November 27, in a Champions League match at Stadio Olimpico.

The teams entered the pitch knowing they have qualified for the Round of 16, after CSKA Moscow lost 2-1 at home to Viktoria Plzen.

Thus Real Madrid and Rome ended level on the top of the group log with nine points each after matchday five.

Both teams also missed the services of some star players no thanks to injury. Roma were without Edin Dzeko, Daniele De Rossi, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Javier Pastore and Diego Perotti.

Equally Real Madrid played without Isco, Casemiro, Keylor Navas, Nacho, Alvaro Odriozola and Sergio Regulion.

Roma appear to have felt the absence of key players as they struggled to convert goal chances in the first half.

They were also poor in defending in the second, a performance that ensured Roma lost 2-0 to Real Madrid.

The first stanza ended all square as both teams tested each other's resolve and tried to set up penetrative plays that would hopefully end the deadlock.

It was Gareth Bale that managed to yield returns after he scored his sides first goal minutes after the start of the second half when he pounced, and curled the ball into the bottom corner.

Lucas Vazquez then confirmed victory for manager Santiago Solari, adding to their goal tally with an emphatic tap in after Karim Benzema's knock down, making it 2-0 for the visitors.

Roma tried to salvage something from the Los Blancos onslaught and almost did so through Aleksandar Kolarov, who attempted a shot from outside the box in the 76th minute.

Madrid top Group G with 12 points with Roma coming in at second with nine points, while Plzen and CSKA Moscow fall to third and fourth place respectively with four points apiece.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously had reported that Real Madrid suffered their first defeat under new manager Santiago Solari following their 3-0 defeat to seventh place Eibar in the La Liga.

Gonzalo Escalante opened scoring for the hosts barely 16 minutes after a disappointing defensive error in Los Blancos' danger zone.

The goal came as a result of Sergio Ramos' poor clearance which gave Escalante the opportunity to tap the ball into the net.

Solari's men, having won their last four matches in all competitions since the appointment of the Argentine were hoping they can find an equaliser but they failed to reach their goal.

Lyon shocked City on match-day 1 with a 2-1 victory, before Pep Guardiola's men went on to recover with three straight wins to get their Champions League campaign back on track.

Guardiola made three tactical changes from the side that defeated West Ham, with John Stones, Oleks Zinchenko and Riyad Mahrez coming in for Nicolas Otamendi, Fabian Delph and Ilkay Gundogan.

The Spaniard tactician's wards, however, failed to break the deadlock with their terrific attack-line, with the hosts equally squandering golden chances in the first half.

But the French side made no mistake upon the resumption of the second half as winger Maxwel Cornet fired a lovely curling effort past Ederson from the edge of the area to hand his team the lead in the 55th minute.

City swiftly restored parity seven minutes later, with Aymeric Laporte heading City level from a set-piece.

The match looked destined for a draw before Cornet rose to the occassion once again in the 80th minute to hand the home side a lead, brilliantly slotting the ball past Ederson.

However, City equalised three minutes later via Sergio Aguero who rose highest despite being marked by two Lyon defenders to direct a fine header in at the far post.

The hard-fought draw saw the Citizens qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Meanwhile, a late goal from Shakhtar against Hoffenheim implies Lyon still have work to do going into match-day six despite sitting second in Group F.

Legit.ng recalls that Man City thrashed West Ham United 4-0 over the weekend to maintain their unbeaten status in the Premier League.

Joining Liverpool was the best decision of my life - Mane on rejecting Manchester United offer

He reminded Merseyside Red loyalists of how he did not think twice when joining Liverpool despite being approached by Manchester United and other top clubs.

"I am very happy, very happy to extend my time at Liverpool. It is a great day for me and I have always said, when I knew I had a chance to come here, I did not have to think twice. The right club the right moment and with the right coach as well," he said.

"They never thought in a million years I would get to this level, so it is a dream for them and they are really proud," Mane said.

Interestingly, Mane had been on Klopp's radar since the 2012 Olympics and the forward who boasts blistering pace and a powerful physique, did not hesitate at the offer to join the Reds.

And from the way Jose Mourinho and his men are performing, it is evident he made the right decision.
