Oseloka Obaze, the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the just concluded Anambra governorship election, has changed his stand on the outcome of the exercise and congratulated Willie Obiano.

Governor Obiano was declared winner of the election after he defeated the other candidates including Obaze, who initially rejected the outcome of the exercise alleging massive rigging of the process.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Obaze said even though he earlier rejected the result of the election, he does not have any intention to challenge it.

“I have closed the chapter on this particular election, we must now move on and return to the task of promoting good governance and the wellbeing of Anambra people,” he said.

Obaze, however, noted that the exercise was flawed with various complaints including malfunctioning card readers.

“In that context, INEC needs to undertake an introspective appraisal of its in-house operations and more so relating to its ICT operations,” he said.

Crisis rocking PDP southwest deepens ahead of party's convention

- There is palpable tension among members of PDP in the southwest ahead of the party’s convention

- The party’s convention is slated for December 9

- Eight aspirants including the former governor of Ogun state, Gbenga Daniel are jostling for the position

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the southwest has warned the party not to stop it from presenting the zone’s delegates to the December 9 national convention.

NAIJ.com gathered that the chairman of the faction, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, gave the warning at a media briefing in Lagos on Monday, November 20.

He said the faction remained the authentic executive in the zone, based on a subsisting court judgement.

Ogundipe said the continued recognition of the Dr. Eddy Olafeso-led faction ran foul of the law, as there had been no superior order to nullify the subsisting Abuja court judgement.

“We are the authentic South-West zonal executive of the PDP based on a subsisting court judgement, and we want the party to accord us the due recognition.

“Any other group parading themselves as exco from the zone is committing an illegality as there has been no better judgement to nullify the court judgement affirming us as the authentic executive.

“Moreso, the subsisting court order restrained Olafeso and his group from participating in the December 9 national convention.

“We do not want to constitute any problem to the convention and that is why we are saying the party should operate in accordance with law and allow us to present delegates from the zone.

“In the event that we are excluded, just as we were at the non-elective convention in Port-Harcourt, we shall take the necessary legal action, and that will affect the party in the long run,” he said.

Ogundipe said the Supreme Court judgement affirming Senator Ahmed Makarfi as caretaker chairman did not nullify the leadership of his faction in the zone.

He urged all stakeholders to abide by the rule of law in order not to jeopardize the progress of the party.

Ogundipe cleared Chief Olabode George of the leadership impasse in the zone.

He said that George and other leaders in the zone had resolved to prevail on the national leadership of the party to address “the potential landmine” in the zone.

Ogundipe said his group would continue to do its best for the progress of the party in the zone.

He said an all-encompassing meeting of stakeholders in the zone, including national chairmanship aspirants, would soon hold, to decide a united position of the zone on the convention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the party has fixed December 9 for convention to elect new national executive officers.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that the ambition of the former governor of Ogun state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, to emerge as the PDP national chairman got a boost recently as he was endorsed by key stakeholders of the party in Imo and Abia states.

NAIJ.com gathered that the probe was sequel to the resolution passed on the motion sponsored by Ali Isa on Tuesday, April 4, which sought to investigate activities of the Presidential Task Force on Pensions Reforms from 2010 to the time of its dissolution.

The ad-hoc committee was also mandated to extend its investigation to the successor agency including Pension Transition Administration Department (PTAD) and report back to the House for further legislative action.

In his lead debate, Isa expressed concern that since the dissolution of the task force, the public has not been informed of what became of the billions of naira recovered by the task force.

He said, instead of the task force discharging its mandate, it became embroiled in widespread allegations of looting of pension funds and has been unable to account for over N200 billion as a result of which the task force was dissolved in February, 2013.

He alleged that the task force took charge of the police and the head of service pension funds and that more than N180 billion was alleged to have been recovered from various banks and also that more than 75,000 ghost pensioners were paid while genuine pensioners were left unattended to.

The warrant would enable the anti-graft agency to keep the former SGF in custody beyond the stipulated time allowed by law.

NAIJ.com gathered that Anyim is being investigated for allegedly collecting N520m from former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) on the eve of the 2015 presidential election.

He also allegedly awarded contracts worth N13bn to companies he had interests in.

According to EFCC the move is to enable its operatives to conduct proper investigation into how he got the money, what it was used for and who the beneficiaries were.

A source at the EFCC said: “Yes, we have obtained a remand warrant to hold the former SGF for about 30 days. This will help us to conduct investigations properly and verify his claims.”

The former SGF was also accused of false assets declaration and using proxies and companies in which he had interest to corner contracts from the ecological funds.

The source said Anyim allegedly awarded contracts to some companies linked to him through which ecological funds were diverted.

The companies include: Foundation Years Limited, Precious Integrated, Precious Petroleum, Mak & Mak, Chap Construction, Eldyke Engineering, Pryke Limited, Chipa Nigeria Limited, Prima A11 Limited, Pima International, Chanto Engineering, Ishiagu Microfinance Bank, Mulak Ventures, Vitro Engineering and Tip Top Nigeria.

“Anyim was SGF from May 2011 to May 29, 2015. During this period, specifically May 2012 to May 2015, the SGF Ecological Fund Account with the Central Bank of Nigeria received an inflow of N58,146,983,677.85.

“From this fund, three of the companies linked to Anyim, Foundation Years, Obis Associate and Eldyke Engineering, received contracts worth over N13bn. Foundation Years alone received a net payment of N10,308,017,838.85 between 2014 and 2015.

“Curiously, on receiving the fund, Foundation Years and another Anyim company, Br-Kthru made several transfers to 37 entities. Some of the organisations and individuals have no nexus at all with ecological issues. Investigators are probing the reasons behind the wild disbursement,” the source added.

- Abaribe was one of the three persons that stood surety for the ‘missing’ IPOB leader

- He, however, sought for N10 million from Army over Kanu’s disappearance

Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe who is representing Abia South Senatorial District on Monday, November 20, told a Federal High Court in Abuja that the unknown whereabouts of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu was caused by Tukur Buratai, the chief of army staff.

Vanguard reports that Abaribe said Buratai was aware of the pending charges against Kanu when he allegedly deployed soldiers to “forcefully and violently” invade the IPOB leader’s home in Afaraukwu Ibeku-Umuahia, in Abia state on September 14.

In a fresh motion filed by his counsel, Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume (SAN) before the court, Abaribe accused Buratai of frustrating his role as a surety for the bail granted to Kanu by the court.

When Abaribe earlier filed a motion seeking to be discharged as Kanu’s surety, the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, ruled on October 17 that the senator could not withdraw his surety-ship until Kanu was produced before the court, thus ordering him to explain the IPOB leader’s whereabouts.

The senator said he chose to be Kanu’s surety out of “patriotic consideration of assisting the judicial process to defuse the tension already generated in the polity”.

While Abaribe was present in court yesterday, Kanu, who is being prosecuted alongside others on charges bordering on treasonable felony, was absent for the second time after the alleged invasion of his home in Abia state by soldiers on September 14, since when he had been declared missing by his family.

In the fresh motion, Abaribe asked the court to grant an order directing the chief of army staff to explain to the court why the attorney-general of the federation should not “be compelled to initiate contempt charges/proceedings against him for his extra-judicial self-help conducts”.

He also asked the court to order the payment of N10m to him for the psychological trauma he has gone through following the extra-judicial self-help actions of the army chief of staff.

At the resumed sitting on Monday, November 20, Justice Nyako did not sit due to the Judges conference she was attending in Abuja and the matter was thereafter adjourned to December 5th for hearing.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that the World Igbo Youth Congress accused Governor Ikpeazu and Senator Abaribe of aiding Kanu to escape from Nigeria.

The group urged the federal government to order the two to provide the IPOB leader whose whereabouts has remained a mystery.

Former aviation minister Oduah reveals how Diezani allegedly forced Jonathan to sack her, ordered her arrest in 2014

- Former minister of aviation, Stella Oduah has alleged that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was forced to sack her in 2014

- She made the revelation in a yet-to-be launched book written by Bolaji Abdullahi, the former minister of sports under Jonathan

- Oduah alleged that she thought Diezani had her back during her travail not knowing that she was actually fueling it and orchestrating all the media attacks

Former minister of aviation, Stella Oduah has alleged that she was removed as a minister in 2014 at the prompting of Diezani Alison-Madueke, the then minister of petroleum resources, who also allegedly ordered the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to arrest her.

Cable news reports that Oduah, now a senator, made the allegation in an upcoming book, ‘On a Platter of Gold: How Jonathan Won and Lost Nigeria’, written by Bolaji Abdullahi, who himself served as a minister under Jonathan from 2011-2014.

NAIJ.com gathered that the book will go on sale nationwide from November 30, 2017 after the launch.

In a copy seen by The Cable, Oduah said when the scandal broke over the $1.6 million BMW armoured cars bought for her by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in 2013, Jonathan invited her to explain herself.

At the meeting were Alison-Madueke, who was perceived to be extremely influential on President Goodluck Jonathan, and Anyim Pius Anyim, who was the secretary to the government of the federation.

According to her account, the president seemed satisfied with her explanation that there was nothing untoward in the deal.

Alison-Madueke also appeared sympathetic and even promised to speak to her friends in the national assembly and the media “to back down” on the issue.

“I thought she had my back. I did not know at the time that she was actually fuelling it and orchestrating all the media attacks,” she told Abdullahi.

“I knew all along that Diezani could not deal with having another female around who had the kind of access I had to the president. But she went too far.

"She thought I was the one who leaked the issue of private jet that put her into trouble with the House of Representatives (Diezani was accused of spending N10 billion on chartered jets). For her it was payback time.”

Twice, she had offered to resign before her sack but Jonathan asked her not to, according to her, yet the issue did not go away.

“Diezani was paying people to keep the story alive. At the same time, she was whispering in the president’s ears that he had to take action,” Oduah alleged, adding that the plan to get her arrested by EFCC was countered by other members of the cabinet.

A presidential committee headed by Sambo Dasuki, then national security adviser, eventually indicted Oduah.

When the president told her that she had to go, Oduah asked: “Did Diezani ask you to sack me?”

Jonathan answered no, but there and then it was agreed that she should be eased out of government. On January 12, 2014, she was removed as minister.

Abdullahi, the author, was fired as minister of sport in March 2014 by Jonathan allegedly on account of his “godfather”, Bukola Saraki, who had joined other party rebels in defecting to the APC.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had previously reported that Senator Stella Oduah described the victory of Governor Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the just concluded governorship election in Anambra as an end to impunity in the state.

Ex-Governor Ibori has a different message concerning the death of Ekwueme and top Nigerians mourning him

- Former Governor James Ibori has fired Nigeria for mourning late Alex Ekwueme when the same nation did not give him a chance to lead it

- Ibori praised Ekwueme saying the nation is the biggest loser concerning his death

- The former governor said Nigeria would never know the examples he would have set as president of Nigeria

A former governor of Delta state, Chief James Ibori, has tongue-lashed some Nigerians currently mourning the late former vice president, Alex Ekwueme.

According to Ibori, the same nation that never allowed the late Ekwueme to rescue it from ‘political and economic morass’ is now mourning him in death.

The former governor said Nigerians were shedding crocodile tears over the death of Ekwueme.

A statement by Tony Eluemunor, Ibori’s spokesperson, called Nigeria the loser in the death of Ekwueme for refusing to allow him put in his very best.

To Ibori, Ekwueme lived a fulfilled life.

“Though His Excellency, Dr Alex Ekwueme, was a great leader, a national father-figure, a stabilizing factor in Nigerian politics.

“I, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, can never stop asking ‘what if!’.

“It is ironic that the nation that betrayed this man’s effort to rescue it from political and economic morass will, now that he is dead, begin to shed crocodile tears.

“Even those who betrayed the very effort to make Ekwueme president may begin to, hypocritically, of course, bewail the fact that Ekwueme or the Igboman or woman, never ruled Nigeria.

“Ekwueme was an extraordinary polyvalent scholar who earned multiple degrees in architecture, urban planning, sociology, history, philosophy and law from several universities. He was a gifted architect whose professional legacies dot various Nigerian cities.

“In politics, he was both gentlemanly and fatherly, introducing mildness even when the others had embraced roughness and irascibility.

“If only we had allowed Ekwueme to rule Nigeria, what example would he have set? Now, we will never know…and Nigeria is the ultimate loser.

“Ekwueme has lived a full life; he has given a radiant account of himself and we all agree he was outstanding.

“May the Almighty God grant his gentle soul eternal rest and pour His consolation upon his family,” he said as reported by The Cable.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that a former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, joined other top Nigerians mourning late Alex Ekwueme.

Babangida described the death of Ekwueme as a big loss to Nigeria, especially as he died at a time the invaluable roles of elderstatesmen are needed for national cohesion.

- The list of panelists to conduct the ward delegates election ahead of the PDP convention is causing crisis in the party

- A national chairmanship aspirant, Tunde Adeniran, petitions the leadership of the party over the list

Political infighting is threatening to mar the coming convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scheduled to take place on December 9.

READ ALSO: Breaking: N-power releases details on how to check pre-selection status for 2017 candidates

The Nation reports that the crisis was triggered by the disagreement over the list of panelists to conduct the ward delegates election ahead of the party’s convention.

A national chairmanship aspirant, Tunde Adeniran, has already petitioned the leadership of the party over the list.

The Adeniran camp has alleged that there was bias in proposed list of panelists to conduct the ward delegates.

”A particular state has members on that list and some of them are the leading campaigners for Prince Uche Secondus. We as campaign organisation were not consulted to bring one or two persons and I am sure other aspirants were not consulted too.

It is an indirect way of short-changing other aspirants. The spirit behind the MoU we signed has been violated, not by the aspirants but by the party managers," the director general of Adeniran’s campaign organisation, Shehu Gabam said.

“Now you have just one chairmanship aspirant having his men deeply entrenched in a system that would determine how the delegates will emerge.

PAY ATTENTION: Read the news on Nigeria’s #1 new app

“The party created the division among the aspirants. The party should provide equal base for all aspirants and I want to say that we disagree with the composition of this list.

The Adeniran camp mentioned Senator George Sekibo, Austin Opara, ThanGod Danagogo, Chief Kenneth Ubani Emeka Ihedioha as some of the Secondus loyalists on the list.

In response to the complaint, the caretaker committee of the PDP said it had received the petition written by Adeniran on the matter and that it would meet to discuss the petition.

Meanwhile, in another report, Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president, on Friday, November 17, declared that he is currently a member of the All Progressives Congress.

According to a report, Abubakar made this known through Paul Ibe, his median aide, when the Concerned Citizens For Atiku (CCA) paid him a visit.

The former president insisted that he belongs to the APC after a group called on him to return to the Peoples Democratic Party.

Ibe said people are free to express themselves as enshrined in the country’s constitution.

Are you ready for Black Friday?

There is so much rush and excitement around Black Friday that no one can stand aside. And it’s going to get hotter - the shopping marathon is beginning in three days! Are you ready to welcome Black Friday with Jiji? Brush up on and find out, how to get 100% prepared for shopping and what items will be the most sought after.

Jiji is Nigeria’s largest online marketplace, and it has prepared many surprises for shoppers. You already know that the prices on Jiji are lower than average, but this is not a reason to miss the participation in the biggest sale of the year. On the contrary, prices for top-notch items are going to drop by 90%!

Make sure Jiji will be the first website you visit this Friday, and do not forget to install Jiji app on your Android (if you haven’t done yet) to catch all the best deals.

What is Black Friday?

In the 1950s, Philadelphia PD had to deal with the chaos after Thanksgiving that took the city over every year. The city was flooded with suburban shoppers and tourists, who arrived for the Army-Navy football game, traditionally held every Saturday after Thanksgiving. While police officers had to work extra-long shifts to deal with the mess created by the crowds of fans and heavy traffic, shoplifters would take the advantage and create even more mess.

It took years to build the positive image around this day. Only in the 1980s, retailers realized how to make profit from this day and turned it into the festival of shopping. In 1985, Black Friday has already become the nationwide event. In 2014, Black Friday came to Jiji. The Police of Philadelphia tried to do everything to calm down the shoppers. Jiji prefers different strategy: enjoy the madness of Black Friday deals.

Are you ready for Black Friday?

When the discounts start?

Officially, Black Friday is the fourth Friday of November. This year, it falls on November 24th. However, retailers usually do not tend to keep everything in secret: they start to prepare users for the shopping marathon beforehand. For instance, if you visit Jiji, you’ll find out that prices started to drop. You may start shopping right now or take a risk and wait for more discounts on Jiji.

The sellers on Jiji have already started to lower prices. For your convenience, all discounted items are placed in a separate category. Thus, you are not going to miss the attractive deals and will focus on the sales only. In the end, there are 364 more days for regular shopping on Jiji.

How to shop effectively?

Sales and discounts are amazing news for everyone, but let’s admit that not everyone can make use of this opportunity, even with such convenient service as Jiji. Here are some pieces of advice that will help you shop like a pro.

Are you ready for Black Friday?

Do the research. There is a lot you can do before the biggest sales start.

  • Sign up to newsletters to receive information about exclusive offers. Some of them are available only for users, who are registered on Jiji.
  • Check social networks – it is the fastest and the most convenient way to follow all updates. Jiji’s Facebook page has almost 1 mln of followers. You can join or stay aside and miss useful announcements.
  • Check out what is happening on Jiji the day before Black Friday and choose what you’d like to buy. Thus, you won’t be lost when the big sales are announced.

Stay organized. Do not lose your mind trying to get everything you may need.

  • Set a budget. Decide how much you are ready to spend and stay within these limits. When you open Jiji, you realize that shopping is like addiction – it becomes complicated to control your desires, when you see so many attractive offers. Nevertheless, we suggest you to act reasonably and do not buy the things you don’t need just because the prices are lower than usually.
  • Log in your Jiji account to start shopping immediately, without losing any precious second of Black Friday time.
  • Use bookmarks to keep an eye on items you like. Save the pages with what you intend to buy to check out if there are discounts instantly and the pages where discounts will be certainly featured, for quick access. You can do this my marking ads as Favorite in your Jiji account or Jiji app.
  • Define the priorities. It will be helpful to make a list of what you want and need, placing all items according to their priority.
Are you ready for Black Friday?

What are the most popular categories?

There are two categories of shoppers: those, who wait for discounts to buy what they need; and those, who buy things because the prices are discounted. The experience shows that some of the categories are extremely popular on this day.

Apple everything. There is hardly a person who can deny the high quality and excellence of Apple devices. However, the prices are quite high for average users. Black Friday is an excellent opportunity to buy one of the best phones/players/tablets/laptops without spending more than you can afford. This Friday, iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X are expected to become the leaders of the sales.

Samsung Galaxy S8. This smartphone is probably the main competitor of the latest iPhone models and the best Android device so far. Those, who want to keep up with the newest technologies or look for a new device to replace their old gadget, see Black Friday as a chance to purchase a cutting-edge device on favourable terms.

HDTVs are also on the list of items most sought after. There is no need to explain, people just like to upgrade their viewing experience.

Consoles. The toys for both adult and children are not the most necessary thing to acquire, but if the prices go down, why not to buy Sony Playstation or Xbox? Thus, for many Black Friday becomes a new Christmas.

Smart speakers. Google Home is expected to join the list of most popular gadgets this Black Friday. If you are planning to buy one, you’ll need to act fast.

Clothes. Devices are not the only popular items. Black Friday is also an occasion to add some brand outfits to the wardrobe, and fashionable buyers do not miss this opportunity.

Makeup. Just like in case with clothes, women prefer to use products from world famous and trusted brands. Some beauty products are highly priced and become affordable for everyone on the Great Sales Day.

Toys. Parents will not leave their children without new LEGO or new Barbie doll, especially when they decide to buy some stuff for themselves, so toy stores are also in the game.

Are you ready for Black Friday?

Is there anything else I need to know?

The last thing to remember is that prices are going to drop up to 90% on Black Friday. The sales continue the entire week, but this is the final countdown before the hottest offers are revealed.

Once again, to get totally prepared, do not forget to check out Jiji.ng to see what’s new!

Go, Mugabe, go by Reuben Abati

$

Editor’s note: There have been mixed reactions from people all over the world since the army took over the government in Zimbabwe and put President Robert Mugabe and his wife, Grace in house arrest. While some people believe that Mugabe should be forced to resign, other argue that it would amount to the violation of his constitutional right if he is forced to step aside since he was democratically elected.

In an article sent to NAIJ.com, the former special adviser to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Reuben Abati analyses why many people want President Robert Mugabe to go.

Since August, I have been the anchorperson of a programme on television called ThisDay Live where we discuss political matters - local and global. The programme is available on Arise News TV at 6pm, 9pm and sometimes at midnight every Sunday.

Two days ago, we discussed the situation in Zimbabwe, the elections in Anambra, Nigeria’s decision to hire Malaysian experts at a cost of N485 million to figure out new pathways for Nigeria’s economic growth (with all the experts in Nigeria oh!), the proposed expansion of President Buhari’s cabinet, the burial of 26 teenage Nigerians by the Italian authorities without Nigeria showing up, the sale of Nigerians and other Africans into slavery in Libya…

But our top story was Zimbabwe and the travails of a once-upon-a-time Comrade Robert Mugabe. We started the programme by joining the Arise News studio in London where our colleague Tham who has been on the Zimbabwean story provided all the updates.

READ ALSO: Alleged stabbing of ex-PDP chairman's son: Police arrest 3 private guards at residence

He had said that he thought that the Lagos studio was a little behind on the story, because at that point, there were clear indications that Robert Mugabe had been persuaded to resign and he thought that would happen in a matter of hours, because television cameras were already being set up and Mugabe, having been expelled from the ruling party, along with his Lady Macbeth wife- the Gucci Grace, was bound to throw in the towel.

I engaged Tham and my last question to him was: Is it certain that Mugabe would resign, or he would have to be impeached? I paraphrase of course. But Tham was sure, he was certain that the matter would not require impeachment proceedings, and that Mugabe was sure to resign and allow Zimbabwe to move ahead. His optimism was misplaced, and I do not blame Tham for his optimism.

We all have been very optimistic that the drama of Zimbabwe had reached a certain end, but the reality is that the coup plotters of Zimbabwe are proving to be the nicest coup plotters ever in the history of that enterprise.

The more we hear about Zimbabwe, the more it appears that the military and the ZANU-PF hierarchy who want Robert Mugabe out of the way, are not really sure of what means to employ to achieve their objective. This must be the most uncertain, the most diffident bid for power ever, and it is a clear illustration of the extent of Robert Mugabe’s hold on power in that unfortunate country.

Majority of the people who want Mugabe out of power may not like his wife, the typist turned mistress, turned wife, turned Lady Macbeth, turned power-seeker, but they remember Mugabe’s role in the history of their nation – he fought for independence, he defied the colonialists and the imperialists, but he then became a despot, muzzling the opposition, killing off any form of dissent, the once revered revolutionary soon became a woman-wrapper, and in his later years, a parody of his old self.

Those who want him out of power are his own associates, members of a party he co-founded, not the opposition, and so they treat their elderly comrade with too much love.

These coup-plotters are therefore behaving as if they are afraid to hurt Mugabe. He is so ensconced in their psyche, they would rather not hurt him, because he is so central to their collective reckoning and history. The Zimbabwe military has been treading so carefully it does not even want to use the word “coup”.

I believe that this is not necessarily out of the fear of international backlash – the international community would be glad to see Mugabe fall- all the issued statements are at best symbolic diplomatese. Mugabe is the oldest President in the world and a signal nuisance with his off-key speeches, falling spells, despotism and soporific appearances on the global stage.

At 93, he has nothing to offer anymore, but the man has since declared that he is determined to remain in office till the age of 100, or interpretively, die in office. A coup against such a man would attract the usual scripted responses but the global feeling would be one of actual relief.

Leaders like Mugabe sometimes put international consensus to threat. Anyhow, the characters in charge of the current situation in Zimbabwe not only put Mugabe under house arrest, they have since then been going to him to pay homage. Two days after the military announced their intervention, the leaders went to visit Mugabe at home.

PAY ATTENTION: Read the news on Nigeria’s #1 news app

He later showed up at a convocation ceremony, where he showed absolutely no signs of distress. One of the graduands was in fact the wife of the Zimbabwe chief of defence forces! When Mugabe addressed the nation on Sunday, he was serenaded by the same people who want him out of the way, with one of them even helping him to turn the pages of an incoherent speech.

The so-called change-agents of Zimbabwe are actually not change agents at all. What is going on in Zimbabwe is not a revolution; it is a re-arrangement of the power nexus within the ruling party. This is all at the end of the day about Grace Mugabe.

The liberation veterans within the ruling party, who are aligned with the ousted former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa resent the rise to influence and power and the threat of further rise of Robert Mugabe’s wife, the 52-year old Grace Mugabe.

They needed to stop the flow of her opportunism: her plan to capture the leader and capture the country with nothing more than female power. I agree that it is important and expedient to stop Grace Mugabe from turning an entire country into what is currently known in Nigeria as “the other room”.

Having achieved that objective, and Robert Mugabe having reassured them, and they assuming that by taking leadership of the party from Mugabe and bringing back Mnangagwa, that the revolution has been saved, the elders of the events of the last week in Zimbabwe may end up advertising their own naivety.

The rigmarole, indeed the entertainment, has gone on for too long. The speech given by Robert Mugabe Sunday night showed that Mugabe is defiant.

He is unwilling to resign or step down. He understands that the Sixth schedule of the Constitution creates its own special roadblocks if a “supposedly elected” President must be removed from office. If care is not taken, Robert Mugabe will outsmart those who want him out of power and we could have a tragic situation in that country.

The old man of Zimbabwe politics is still trying to take charge, postponing the evil day and even after his removal from the leadership of the party, he wants to preside over the next meeting of the ZANU-PF.

Here is Mugabe behaving like that proverbial, aged uncle in the village who keeps defying death. Each time he falls ill and the children and grandchildren begin to prepare for his funeral, he would suddenly wake up again, sometimes after his death has been announced and funeral arrangements have been made.

The family got trapped in the endless funeral arrangements, until someone came up with the idea that the Oracle should be consulted to find out the mystery of the old man’s repeated Lazarus-like existence.

The Oracle’s striking revelation was that the old man had a charm, a ring on the big toe of his left leg, and until and except that ring is removed, the man may never die. What the change-seekers of Zimbabwe should do is to remove that ring around Mugabe’s thumb toe on the left leg.

It is none other than the respect and sympathy that the authors of the recent process still have for Mugabe. Left to the ZANU-PF leadership and the military, they’d rather have Mugabe die in office. What they cannot stand is the impunity of his overreaching wife, the Jezebel called Grace Mugabe.

The turning point came when Grace turned her gaze on the liberation veterans and began to eliminate them starting with former VP Emmerson. The liberation wing of the ZANU-PF could no longer tolerate the rise of Grace Mugabe’s G-40 and their bid for power. Grace Mugabe is Robert Mugabe’s nemesis. She is the Delilah to his Samson.

When Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari told an international audience that his wife belongs to the sitting room, the kitchen and the other room, we all accused him of misogyny, but in faraway Zimbabwe, Mugabe is making Buhari look like a man of wisdom. Not a few world leaders have been destroyed by their wives: Lucy Kibaki, the wife of Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki was so powerful, her husband openly deferred to her in public.

In Africa’s patriarchal system, a President’s wife behaving like she has her husband on a leash, is bound to ignite crisis. Grace Mugabe is said to be in a fit of hysteria. Forty-one years younger than the husband she married by stabbing another husband in the back, Grace Mugabe will never be forgotten as a case study for the anatomy of female power.

On his own, Mugabe, going through a process of anagnorisis and devastating catharsis, wants to hold on to power by all means. Sit-tight African leaders and despots never want to leave. Idi Amin of Uganda didn’t want to go.

Yahya Jammeh, the most recent example, tried every possible trick to prolong his stay in office. In Egypt, it took a people’s revolution to push Hosni Mubarak out. Mugabe is going through the same course of defiance. He needs to be reminded that the people are the real Oracle of democracy. The game is up. The genie is out of the bottle.

In 37 years, the ordinary people of Zimbabwe, who have majorly not known any leader other than the old man, have never gone out in protest to reject him, not even when he brutalized the opposition, not even when he killed hundreds of thousands of Ndebeles, but now the people have found their voice.

They are defying Mugabe. They want him out. He has thus lost legitimacy and influence. His mystique is gone. His power is vanishing. Without power, a man of power is nothing but a shell.

Mugabe has reportedly rejected every option that he has been given: resignation, a life in exile, or retirement within the country, with full immunity. He is not sure. He is trying to buy time. The truth is Mugabe has been caged. He is afraid of tomorrow. He is scared. It is good to see the hunter in the role of the hunted. He does not deserve our pity.

Hopefully, other sit-tight African leaders who imagine themselves to be monarchs rather than leaders would learn from the travails of former Comrade Robert Mugabe.

In Togo, Equitorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Cameroon, and elsewhere in Africa, sitting Presidents are behaving like monarchs. The rings on their toes would also have to be removed by the people, in order to fully consolidate the democratic dispensation in Africa.

The international community must not allow Zimbabwe to continue to drift. The uncertainty that lingers in that country, if allowed to continue, could result in greater chaos and instability. The Military and the ZANU-PF have done apparently their best so far to push Robert Mugabe, but the man has refused to jump.

READ ALSO: Diezani forced Jonathan to sack me, ordered my arrest in 2014 - Stella Oduah

The international community has the wherewithal to make him jump. It must be made clear to him in no uncertain terms that the game is up. It is over. The Zimbabwe parliament should be encouraged to impeach Robert Mugabe. Fears of a possible deluge in a Zimbabwe without Mugabe may be overstretched.

Things are bad enough as they are in that country, with inflation at 50%, a comatose economy and widespread hardship. Mugabe’s exit should guarantee only one outcome: an opportunity to rebuild a battered country and a traumatized citizenry.

That real change may not come from a compromised ZANU-PF and so-called rent-collecting liberation veterans, but from a new beginning in which Zimbabwe frees itself from the Banquo’s ghost of Mugabe’s misrule and an entitlement class parading itself as revolutionaries.
