An attempt by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to arrest the heads of the State Security Service (SSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) has reportedly caused tension in Abuja.

Premium Times reports that a combined team from the EFCC and Nigeria Police Force (NPF) attempted to arrest the former head of the NIA, Ayo Oke, as well as that of the SSS, Ita Ekpeyong, in their homes located at Mamman Nasir Street in the Asokoro district of Abuja.

They were however resisted by armed security agents of the two agencies on guard.

It was learnt that the tension that occurred thereafter caused serious traffic situation in the area.

At the time of this report, none of the agencies had issued a formal explanation or given details concerning the incident.

NAIJ.com reports that Oke was first suspended and later sacked as investigations into the $43.45 million allegedly discovered in an apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos continued.

The EFCC thereafter invited him and his wife, Folashade, for questioning.

“In furtherance of its investigative activities to unravel the circumstances surrounding the $43.45 million cash recovered by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos sometime in April 2017, the commission has invited former director general of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ayodele Oke and his wife, Folashade Oke.

“Oke had refused to honour previous invitations by the commission which resumed its investigation into the matter, following the federal government’s decision to relieve Oke of his position as DG.

“Beside the couple, other suspects are equally being invited to determine their culpability or otherwise in the humongous cash, in foreign currencies and naira notes, stashed in a residential building at Osborne road Ikoyi, Lagos,” a statement by the EFCC had said.

George Weah poised to possibly become Liberia’s president, as electoral commission dismisses opponent’s appeal

- An appeal filed by a contender for the Liberian presidency, Charles Brumskine, has been dismissed by the country’s National Elections Commission

- The development improves the chances of football legend, George Weah, who would now take part in a re-run with the incumbent vice president, Joseph Boakai

- At the first round of the elections, Weah had pulled in 38 per cent of the votes, Boakai had come second with 29 per cent, while Brumskine had come third

The Hearing Office of Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) has dismissed complaints of electoral fraud that has stalled the run-off presidential elections, NAN reports.

According to local media, the officer in charge, Muana Ville, trashed the complaints on the ground that the party did not substantiate the allegation of fraud.

NAIJ.com gathers that Ville added that the complaints also fell short of proving that the alleged irregularities had an impact on the overall results of the October 10 presidential and House of Representatives elections.

The complaints were filed by opposition figure and third-place finisher in the first round, Charles Brumskine, of Liberty Party (LP).

Brumskine had alleged massive fraud and irregularities in the general elections, calling for a re-run.

The ruling Unity Party represented by incumbent Vice President Joseph Boakai, who came second in the first round with 29 per cent, later joined forces with LP.

On October 31, the country’s Supreme Court granted Brumskine’s request for a stay order on the run-off presidential election earlier slated for November 7.

The run-off will see first-round top finisher and football legend, George Weah, with 38 per cent, slug it out with Mr. Boakai to succeed outgoing President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Ville stated: “On the day of election, voters arrived at almost all of the polling places before queue controllers and arranged their own queues, making it difficult to redirect to their proper roll.

“The defendants testified to difficulties that impeded the timely opening of polls; some due to the overflowing of rivers where polling staffs had to carry materials in canoes and on their heads in long distances.

“The hearing officer is not convinced that these challenges alluded to by the defendants during the hearing of the complaint amount to fraud."

LP and its co-complainants were said to have faulted the ruling and announced their decision to file an appeal before the NEC Board of Commissioners.

- Ex-minister of finance, Kalu Idika, was drugged and robbed by his chef

- The Chef invited a gang of thieves to rob him after drugging him

- They went away with N750,000 cash and valuables worth N10million

Former minister of finance, Dr Kalu Idika, was drugged by her chef, one Peter Odion, who invited a group of thieves to rob him of money and valuables.

The thieves got away with N750,000 cash and valuables worth N10million naira from the ex-minister house located at 180A, Moshood Olugbani Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The Punch reports that Odion allegedly put a sedative in a cup of coffee he served his boss on Wednesday, November 15 and immediately after Idika slept off, Odion was said to have led his gang members into the boss’ apartment, where they made away with a sum of N750,000, a Blackberry, a Samsung phone and other valuables estimated at about N10m.

Odion was paraded on Monday at the police command office in Ikeja along with four others identified as Samuel Ogana, Joy Omagu, Uboh Obi and Sunday Emmanuel.

The state acting commissioner of police, Edgal Imohimi, said operatives of the State Intelligence Bureau, tracked down the suspects.

The acting CP said the gang members had wanted to use a similar method to rob one Mrs. Augustina Akhibi, when they met their Waterloo.

He said: “The syndicate is made up of six members who specialise in getting jobs as cooks or home helps and while in service, gain the trust of their principals and inject their food with sedatives to make them sleep off. They thereafter cart away their principals’ belongings.

“The first victim, Dr Kalu Idika, was robbed of items worth N10,943,000 on September 20, 2017, while the second potential victim, Mrs. Akhibi, was used by the police as a bait to bust the syndicate.”

He added that drug substances like Diazepam Injection, ground nitrogen (morgodon) table, and a syringe filled with some substances, were recovered from the gang.”

Odion confessed to the crime, claiming he was desperate to get a sum of N60,000 his boss allegedly owed him.

He said: “I started working with the man some months ago. The man owed me N60,000 and he refused to pay. I told my friend, Samuel (Ogana), and he gave me the drug to put in his tea. They came in when he was asleep and robbed him. I played along with them. Other workers in the house did not know I was involved. I got N100,000 from the proceeds.”

Omagu, who was 22, said Emmanuel acted as an agent and contracted her as a housemaid to Akhibi.

She said: “He gave me some sedatives to make the woman sleep, but I had not used them when the police arrested me.

But 38-year-old Emmanuel denied that he gave the sedatives to Omagu, noting that he had got a housemaid for the woman in the past.

He said: “I only told her (Omagu) that the woman was wicked and that she could do whatever she liked to her. I don’t know anything about the sedatives."

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Nigerian police has paraded some suspected criminal elements said to specialize in kidnapping, armed robbery and car snatching.

The different gangs paraded by the police reportedly operate in the Abuja-Kaduna, Abuja-Minna-Bida, Birnin Gwari-Funtua and Abuja-Lokoja highways.

They were arrested as a result of the Operation Absolute Sanity, which was recently strengthened with additional police personnel and needed logistics by the Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim K. Idris.

2019: PDP makes frantic bid to woo Atiku as former VP’s posters flood Buhari’s home state

- President Muhammadu Buhari’s home state of Katsina has been flooded with posters of former vice president, Atiku Abubakar

- The posters have reportedly been sighted at the Peoples Democratic Party secretariat in the state and at other locations

- A group in the opposition party has also sent out an urgent message to the former vice president, to return to the party

Ahead of 2019, posters of ex-vice president and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar, have flooded Katsina state, Punch reports.

This development comes amidst attempts by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to woo the former VP back into the opposition party’s fold.

READ ALSO: 30 killed as bomb blast rocks Adamawa

NAIJ.com gathers that the posters have been sighted on the premises of the PDP secretariat in Katsina, and on other areas along Kano road; bearing various inscriptions such as ‘Wazirin, we earnestly want you back in PDP,’ ‘Atiku, political son of Katsina state for 2019,’ and ‘Wazirin, the bridge builder.’

A statement issued by a group called ‘PDP Concerned Elders Consultative Forum,’ and signed by its chairman, Hussaini Dambo, sent an urgent message to Atiku to return to the opposition party.

It read in part: “The forum wishes to acknowledge and appreciate the unmistakable fact that the Wazirin Adamawa is a ‘political’ son of Katsina state to say the least and for obvious reasons, which are not worthy of reiteration here.

“More importantly, the forum wishes to appreciate the historical fact that the Wazirin Adamawa has made varied indelible contributions to the foundation and development of the PDP and indeed that of democratic politics in Nigeria for decades.

“This is not only worth being remembered but it is also imperative to the current struggle being made by the PDP to wriggle back to become the mainstream political party in Nigeria.

“Also, the history of defences given to the struggle to sustain democracy in Nigeria’s recent past cannot adequately be written without a serious mention of the immense contributions of this great gentleman, who was in the frontline against those who at one time or the other, chose to truncate the noble path of sustainable democracy in our national body polity.

“In light of the foregoing undeniable facts, we the members of this forum, together with our delegates and millions of supporters wish to present this S.O.S call to His Excellency, the Wazirin Adamawa, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to return to the PDP without further ado!

“We pray that he hearkens to our call, and we seek the credible indulgence of the PDP to receive him with open arms in order to ensure a successful rebirth of the party.”

However, in a meeting which was chaired by the Katsina PDP chairman, Alhaji Salisu Majigiri, at the state secretariat on Monday, November 20, there was no statement made about Atiku’s return.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the southwest chapter of the Nigeria Youth Coalition called on Atiku Abubakar, the former vice president of Nigeria, to return to the Peoples Democratic Party.

NYC declared that Abubakar should return to PDP ‘as soon as possible’ because he may find it difficult to secure the presidential slot of the PDP if he fails to participate in the party’s December National Convention.

Shirt dresses are the perfect items to complete the wardrobe of any stylish girl. To make it even more elegant, try making your shirt dress using a combination of bright colored Ankara fabrics. This article will show you some beautiful styles you could try out.

Top Ankara shirt dress styles

Every year, fashion becomes more and more universal. Women have included pants and shirts in their wardrobe long ago and till this day they constantly borrow some decor elements of men's clothing designs.

Ankara shirt dress in everyday fashion

A vivid example of masculine and feminine combination in fashion is a shirt dress. This item is very convenient for everyday wear. It is looks simple enough for everyday use and at the same time emphasizes the details of a woman’s figure.

Ankara shirt dress designs

When made with bright colored Ankara fabrics, this dress goes to an all new level of style. The interesting decor elements of Ankara helps to diversify the fairly simple tailoring of shirt dresses, as well as the combination of several colors or ornaments in one product.

If a lady leads an active lifestyle, a dress or even a few dresses of such design should be in her wardrobe. These dresses can be worn perfectly in hot weather.

Ankara classic shirt dress

Latest Ankara styles in vogue

Let us start with the classic version of this dress - a straight cut Ankara shirt dress. This dress is relevant for every fashion season. It is sewn straight or slightly fitted, and up to knee-length or just above the knee.

A classic shirt dress of unique Ankara styles is always done with a turndown collar. A strap can also be attached to the front of the gown. Such a decorative strap with or without buttons can only be near the neckline, and may reach the middle of the chest. In other cases, it could be sewn up to the waist or hem of the dress. The strap, as a rule, serves only as an ornament and a few buttons should be left unbuttoned at the collar. But sometimes the dress can be unbuttoned to the bottom, like a robe.

Ankara shirt dress with V-shaped neckline

The neckline of the Ankara shirt dress is most often V-shaped. It also mostly made without any cutouts, especially when the collar is fastened to all the buttons. If you want to be creative, you can make a dress with a collar stand or without a collar with a small round neckline and a small incision in the middle; however, this will be a digression from the classic version of the shirt dress.

Ankara straight shirt gown

The sleeves of the dress can be sewn short, to the elbow, three-quarters or long. Long sleeves can be made with cuffs, like a normal shirt. Any ruffles, sleeves-lanterns, bat, and other designs can be skipped so the only decoration can be lapels or cuffs.

Ankara shirt dress with round cutouts on the shoulders

If you want to add some twist, you can make round cutouts on the shoulders of a dress with long or three-quarter sleeves. As you know, this season the open shoulders are on the trend. But since this design does not provide great liberty to the wearer, only people with beautiful feminine shoulders should go for cutouts.

Ankara shirt dress with a belt

You can wear a straight Ankara shirt dress with a belt to emphasize the waistline. The belt can be sewn from the main fabric of the dress, and you can also use any other belt you like.

The dress of this tailoring will suit girls with the “rectangle” or “hourglass” figures.

Ankara shirt dress with a fluffy skirt

Ankara shirt gown for a "pear” figure type

If you have a “pear” figure like many African women, then you better choose the A-silhouette. You can also sew the dress flared to the bottom or make a fluffy skirt to match the classic top in a shirt style.

Such versions of shirt dresses in Ankara fashion are usually sewn up to the knee, or a couple of centimeters above or below. You can make midi length or to the floor, but such varieties of this dress are less common.

Ankara shirt dress with a rounded hemline

The strictness of the Ankara shirt dress tailoring can be supplemented with an attractive hemline. For example, you can make the hem rounded instead of straight. Moreover, it is good to use small incisions on the hem sides. You can also leave the hem straight and make the side cuts rounded.

Ankara shirt gown: the front is short and the back is long

Alternatively, use different lengths of the dress: make the front shorter, and the back longer.

A simple Ankara shirt dress can be diversified with the help of colors. Vivid Ankara fabrics can help you achieve this. Bright sleeves look very interesting with a dress made of a more discreet color. You can also divide the dress into segments and sew them from Ankara fabric with various patterns.

Ankara shirt dress with segments of various colors and patterns

Such segments can also be of different colors. The pattern on the fabric of all segments should be about the same size. If you take an Ankara textile with a small pattern for one part of the dress, then other segments must also have small ornaments and vice versa. If you make a mix of fabrics with large and small patterns as well as of different colors, the outfit could turn out looking like a mess.

Ankara shirt dress with details of different colors

You can also focus on only certain details of the dress. For example, let the main fabric of the gown be of pastel colors with a small pattern while the collar, cuffs on the sleeves and patch decorative pockets can be made from a fabric of bright color and without a pattern. It is appropriate to use a décor of white or other light tones for a bright dress with a large pattern.

Ankara shirt gown without buttons

In any case, a shirt dress made from bright Ankara fabrics is an excellent option for casual or office outfits. You can always opt for a dress made from bright Ankara fabrics when going on a date, for a walk with friends, to work or to school.

Let's congratulate the winner of the Anambra election. It's Willie Obiano. Click and read more about the election process in the state and some information about the other candidates.

Anambra election

After the result was announced, Obiano shook hands with other Anambra election participants. All in all, the election was peaceful with only minimal report of violence. However, according to local government information, many people may have manipulated the results. Several polling units' results were cancelled due to such incidents as an excessive number of voters, the complicity of officials during the voting, and some other violations.

The poll was conducted in 21 areas of the local government.

  • 234,072 voters voted in favour of Willie Obiano.
  • As a result, Obiano defeated his closest rival, Tony Nwoye who had 98,750 votes.
  • Oseloka Obaze got 70,000 votes, taking the 3rd place in the Anambra governorship election 2017.
  • Osita Chidoka, who finished 4th, got 7,900 votes.
  • The Nollywood actor, Yul Edochie, also took part in the Anambra election 2017. He scored 143 votes.
  • As a result, it was confirmed that Obiano meets all the requirements and can be declared a winner.
  • The fifth position went to a businessman Godwin Ezeemo.
  • The other 32 participants were far behind in the ranking.

Nwoye congratulations to Obiano

Reactions to the Anambra election final results were mainly calm and positive. But when Nwoye congratulated Obiano he said that APC supporters were crippled by APGA representatives. However, he said that God sees everything and the events that happened are in His hands.

Nwoye assured the public that he will not take the matter to court. Although his party may have reason to do so given the available evidence.

Victory speech

When Obiano accepted the mantle, he said that this achievement isn’t his personal merit but as a result of his party's effort. This victory fully belongs to Ndi Anambra, he said.

He thanked everyone who saw his vision. He also talked about farm owners in Anambra State. Obiano understands that agriculture is the key to economic prosperity for Nigeria in the future and is pleased that many people supported him in an effort to improve the situation.

The winner described the other candidates as his brothers and said that they all fought courageously. He, as a leader, promises to tackle his responsibilities dutifully. The interests of Anambra State are more important than the private ambitions of any of the candidates. So he asked them to join him to create a better future for the residents of the area.

Gratitude to Buhari

Obiano expressed his respect and appreciation to President Buhari, saying that under his leadership, democracy is developing and taking its roots deeper in the Nigerian land. The President promised free and fair elections and this came to past.

Willie Obiano - the winner

Willie Obiano

One of the people who congratulated Obiano first was Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy President of the Senate. He said he was glad that things went peacefully and successfully for the governor.

Ekweremadu's opinion

The electoral senator claimed that the result obtained is an expression of the trust of the citizens of Anambra. In his opinion, Obiano has all the features of becoming an outstanding leader. In the next 4 years, he will able to develop his vision of democracy in his state.

Ekweremadu thanked the security forces, journalists, representatives of civil organizations who observed the situation and helped to choose the governor.

He also urged Obiano to shake hands with his opponents as a sign of reconciliation. After all, now the political elite must unite and strive for a common goal regardless of personal aspirations.

Osita thinks Obiano manipulated the elections

Osita Okechukwu, the head of APC, said that in many respects, Obiano won because of Buhari's condescending attitude. If the President made fair judgments and intervened, Obiano would not have gotten opportunity to manipulate the security services. But official reports say that the election process was completely fair and free.

Osita Okechukwu said it's unclear how Obiano will handle the administration given the devastated state budget since he used all available means to succeed in elections.

Osita Okechukwu - one of the opponents

Osita Okechukwu

It also became known that the security agents arrested the representative of APC's Emeka Ibe before the election. Many expect that Obiano's rule will be accompanied by the constant presence of policemen and soldiers on the streets.

Osita called these elections an absurd theatrics. According to him, Obiano thoroughly calculated every detail to get the governor's chair and did not always act honestly. He came to power along with the same people who supported him in 2013. This unexpected coincidence is tantamount to a conspiracy, he believes.

Chidoka claims that he lost because he played honestly

Chidoka, a representative of UPP, conducted a rather vocal election campaign but his actions did not bring the needed result. Describing the situation, he said that his loss was due to the fact that he chose the honest way of participating in the elections. He deliberately did not trade votes, even though for some candidates this was standard practice.

People distrust politicians because they are not sure that these people really act in their interests. Although the message of the UPP was completely aimed at caring for the people, citizens did not want to believe in it because of the strengthened stereotypes about the lack of honesty of politicians. As a result, the bulk of people voted for the candidate who offered them the highest price.

Chidoka

Chidoka - a representative of UPP

Chidoka said that citizens refused to vote for his party without material compensation. But he was not going to win that way. And we can see that he really did not win. People want fair elections but they are responsible for making them unfair. Is this not a paradox?

Of course, losing the election is not the result to which the representatives of UPP aspired, but they still do not fall into despair. The competitors won not only because UPP had a bad structure or wrong ideas. They simply decided not to use such methods as bribery and threats. As democrats, they accept the decision of the citizens. True democracy is a respect for the will of the voters. If citizens want to be sold and managed by corrupt politicians, no one can prevent them from doing so.

If people knew the truth, then representatives of this party will surely win in their hearts. Citizens saw that they work hard and resist all the difficulties. They are sincerely devoted to their mission and strive for the common good. At the end of his speech, Chidoka thanked everyone who supported his candidacy.

Obaze does not agree with results

Obaze said that the vote is overstated and the data of the ballots do not correspond to reality. According to him, these disturbing facts indicate that the election does not reflect the will of the people. Obaze also expressed the idea that the inhabitants of Anambra do not care too much about their well-being. They judged the candidates superficially and made the wrong choice.

Obaze

We hope it was interesting for you to find out the latest on Anambra election. As you can see, the opinions are quite contradictory. Let's hope that governor Obiano will show his best qualities.

Mugabe addressed the nation on state-run television but remained defiant. The official close to the talks spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

It is an extraordinary end to 37 years in power for the world's oldest head of state, who had vowed to rule until death.

The 93-year-old Mugabe has been under house arrest since the military moved in Tuesday, angered by his firing of his longtime deputy and the positioning of unpopular first lady Grace Mugabe to succeed him.

Mugabe tried to buy time in negotiations with the military on a dignified exit but quickly found himself isolated.

Tens of thousands of people poured into the streets of the capital Saturday, to demand that Mugabe, one of Africa's last remaining liberation leaders, step aside after overseeing the once-prosperous country's economic collapse.

The deputy Mugabe fired, former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, is poised to be Zimbabwe's next leader after the Central Committee made him its nominee to take over when Mugabe goes.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had earlier reported that the embattled President Robert Mugabe was sacked from his position as leader of the ruling ZANU-PF party and replaced by Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The newspaper review for Tuesday, November 21, leads with Nigerians across the country mourning the death of elder statesman and second republic vice president, Alex Ekwueme among other stories.

Vanguard reports that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Onnoghen, Monday, tackled President Muhammadu Buhari at the opening session of the 2017 All Nigeria Judges’ conference, saying there is need for the executive arm of government to learn to obey court judgments and orders.

The CJN, who spoke at the event personally attended by President Buhari, maintained that obedience to court orders ought to be considered by other arms of government, especially the executive, “as a strong motivation for the fight against corruption and the entrenchment of the Rule of Law in our country.”

Justice Onnoghen said Nigeria should learn from countries like Kenya and the United States where he said there is “Rule of Law in practice”, with their presidents and government agencies respecting court decisions against the interest of the government in power.

The CJN further demanded total independence of the judiciary from any form of external pressure from other arms of government in the discharge of its duties.

The Punch reports that the federal government on Monday announced the pricing of its offering of $3bn dual series notes under its $4.5bn Global Medium Term Note programme.

The notes, according to a statement by the minister of finance, Kemi Adeosun, comprise a $1.5bn 10-year series and a $1.5bn 30-year series.

The Punch newspaper

She said the notes represented Nigeria’s fourth Eurobond issuance, following issuances in 2011, 2013 (two series) and earlier this year.

In the statement signed by her media adviser, Oluyinka Akintunde, the minister said the 10-year series would bear interest at a rate of 6.5 per cent, while the 30-year series would bear interest at a rate of 7.625 per cent.

These, it noted, would be repayable with a bullet repayment of the principal on maturity.

This Day reports that Monday was a day of mourning nationwide when word got out that Nigeria’s first executive vice president, Alexander Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme, had passed on at a London hospital on Sunday night at the age of 85.

A man of notable intellect and academic accomplishments, Ekwueme who made his mark as a foremost architect, businessman and later politician was the country’s vice president from October 1, 1979 to December 31, 1983, when the second republic headed by former president, Shehu Shagari, was overthrown in a bloodless military coup spearheaded by then Major-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

The irony is that it was the same Buhari, as president, who ordered that Ekwueme be flown overseas for medical attention after he suffered what his family described as a chest infection and slipped into a coma in Enugu where he had resided.

In Oyo state, a meeting on Sunday to settle the differences between the two factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) broke up in disagreement.

The Nation reports that the PDP remains unsettled as it heads for its December 9 convention.

National chairman aspirant Prof. Tunde Adeniran has kicked against the list of panelists to conduct the ward delegates’ election ahead of the convention. He has petitioned the leadership.

The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting has been fixed for Abuja to ratify the list, among other decisions on the convention.

Adeniran said many members of the committee are sympathisers and supporters of Prince Uche Secondus, another chairmanship candidate.

In the southwest, the faction led by Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe is laying claim to legitimacy. The leadership recognises Dr. Eddy Olafeso as the vice chairman (southwest). Makanjuola is threatening a lawsuit should his faction be denied participation at the convention.

The Guardian reports that the embattled former chairman of the Presidential Pension Reform Team (PPRT), Abdurasheed Maina, has challenged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to an open debate over the allegations penciled against him.

He insisted that he was innocent of the N2.1 billion alleged fraud.

Maina, who spoke through his lawyer, Sani Katu, insisted that he did not steal N2.1 billion from the pension fund as alleged but that the federal government owed him a large sum of money.

The former PRTT boss, therefore, challenged the anti-graft agency to an open panel of investigation where he would reveal the unknown to Nigerians.
