Usman Aliyu, the chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), while speaking with the media, said all roads were blocked because motorists in the environs are fed up with the killings and kidnappings of people.

He said: “Gunmen no longer block road with stones or tree branches, they now stationed themselves in the middle of the road armed to the teeth.

“They open fire to any vehicle passing and don’t mind the number of casualties during their attacks on motorists.”

Aliyah also said the perpetrators have been throwing caution to the wind in the way they attack their passengers, as many are reported to have sustained so many injuries in cases where they attacked death.

He added: “Right now we have a total of 20 drivers, plying Birnin Gwari-Kaduna road, in various hospitals battling for their lives. Some have lost their legs or hands from gunshots apart from those killed by these criminals. We still have three drivers in the hands of the kidnappers.

“We call on both federal and state governments to come to our aid and rescue the situation because even today these criminals killed and kidnapped many people. They have also now resorted to burning down the vehicle they attacked.”

Nafiu Habib, the spokesman for the police in the state, however, said the command did not receive any reports regarding the attack.

Habib said: “From yesterday (Friday) and today (Saturday) we are yet to receive any official report of attack as regard to the activities of those bandits along Birnin Gwari road.

Whenever we received report of attack on any of the highways in Kaduna we quickly send reinforcement team to support the police manning the road.”

Foundation for anti-corruption fight in Nigeria was laid by PDP - Chidoka

- Former minister of aviation, Chief Osita Chidoka, says credit should be given to the PDP for its genuine fight against corruption

- Chidoka, who is the spokesman for Atiku/Obi National Presidential Committee for Southeast, says PDP fought against corruption in the Nigerian public sector

- The former minister says PDP-led government was responsible for setting up the major anti-corruption institutions

Chief Osita Chidoka, a former minister of aviation, has said that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should be given credit for its genuine fight against corruption in the Nigerian public sector.

According to him, the PDP-led government was responsible for setting up the major anti-corruption institutions.

Legit.ng gathers that Chidoka said instead of fighting corruption, what the All Progressives Congress (APC) does is punish perceived enemies of government for alleged corruption.

READ ALSO: NAIJ.com upgrades to Legit.ng: a letter from our Editor-in-Chief Bayo Olupohunda

He said: “I don’t think this government has fought corruption, what they have done is that they punish the perceived enemies of government for alleged corruption.

“The fight against corruption should not be on credibility or the will of an individual, it should be based on institutions that employ the modern technological innovations that will make money not available to be stolen in the first instance.

“The PDP government led the most comprehensive war against corruption because it was under the party that we came up with the idea of setting up agencies that were dedicated to fighting corruption.

“These are the EFCC, ICPC and BPP which addressed corruption in the procurement system by ensuring that contractors go through a price control system and ensure that due process is followed.

“We did not stop at that, the PDP also transferred all public funds for capital votes back to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) so that people will no longer keep these funds in the bank to yield interest while not funding ongoing projects.”

“We also discovered that salary of workers was causing huge leakage because the MDAs which are in charge of payroll, used the money sent to them to pay real and ghost workers and other allowances.

“That was why the PDP government introduced the IPPIS, workers salaries were centralised and deposited at the Central Bank and paid directly to them without passing through any MDA.

“So, we had mechanisms that addressed the payroll system, over head, capital votes and revenue collection.

“On the revenue side, we needed to ensure that all revenues of government are accounted for, that was why the government introduced the Treasury Single Account (TSA).

Fact Check: Did Oba of Lagos leave his throne for Buhari during president’s visit?

$

President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the palace of the Oba of Lagos, HRH Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has been a subject of the trending controversy with many Nigerians on social media claiming that the Lagos monarch vacated his throne for the president.

Yoruba kings, and of course traditional monarchs in Nigeria and other parts of the world, place utmost regard and respect for the throne which is exclusively accessible to only the reigning king.

No other person, no matter how importantly placed, is expected to sit on a king’s throne while he is still reigning.

READ ALSO: It is over for APC - Kwankwaso, Secondus boast as Atiku storm Kano

Hence, the huge outcry on social media when a photo surfaced with the claim that the Oba of Lagos vacated his throne for President Buhari. Many accused the monarch of desecrating the Yoruba culture.

The criticism was further fuelled by the monarch’s open support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the endorsement of President Buhari’s re-election.

The Nigerian monarchs do not have political power according to the Constitution. However, given the respects and influence they wield among their subjects, politicians always covet their endorsements to boost their chances.

The main question: Did the Oba of Lagos really vacate his throne for President Buhari?

Given the photo above, one may be tempted to erroneously believe that the monarch truly left his throne for President Buhari. Another photograph from the visit, however, busted the claim.

Fact Check: Did Oba of Lagos leave his throne for Buhari during president’s visit?

It is common for Nigerian monarchs to have other ‘royal chairs’ beside their thrones reserved for important dignitaries, including fellow kings when they pay them a visit.

One of such chairs was the one President Buhari sat on, not the king’s throne.

- An Abuja-based has conducted a voter education rally in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja

- The group, Africana League Development Initiative, has been sensitizing residents in the Nigerian capital on electoral processes and voting system

- Members of the organisation during the rally carry, different placards to further convey the information to residents

An Abuja-based Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), Africana League Development Initiative, has held a voter education rally, sensitizing residents in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on electoral processes and voting system.

The Lagos branch of the league coordinated by Mr. Abayomi Odutoye and Mr. Hamza Hope held its rally simultaneously with ongoing preparation for Benue branch to conduct a similar rally on Tuesday, February 12, at Otukpo.

The executive director of the organization, Glory Nneka Ukwenga, in a brief chat with journalists during the event on Saturday, February 9, noted the exercise was carried out to educate and carry the people along in the electoral process.

Her words: “We have observed that INEC and other NGOs in Nigeria have not really been able to penetrate local communities to explain the voting process in details using local dialects or interpreters; this we have taken upon ourselves today to play our part as active citizens.

“As a body, we have decided to educate and carry local people along on the issue of the forthcoming elections and voting, so as to be familiar with the processes.

“Some of the areas which residents were enlightened on ranges from the identification of party logo; the particular finger (index) to use in voting; recognition of their polling units within their different locations and other germane issues.”

Members of the organisation during the rally carry, different placards to further convey the information to residents, with different short inscription, saying "your vote is your power" "election no be holiday" "protect your future by voting right" "choose your own candidate by voting" "step out to vote" "Obey INEC workers."

Also, flyers containing the messages were distributed to passers-by during the rally.

Ukwenga further advised the potential voters to go out and vote with the enlightenment they have received, assuring them that “in this coming election, your vote will count if you vote right.”

“If candidates don't deserve your vote, don't vote them. Our vote is our power and the power belong to us,” she added.

The organisation which has been in existence since year 2017 further tasked residents to act, vote and add value, saying it's not enough to complain but acting actively and politically is the surest means to the path of self-actualization.

Legit.ng also gathered that the information passed across to the residents were translated in pidgin and Hausa language for effective understanding.

Also speaking to residents during the rally, the Director of Programs, Mr Stephen Odey, told residents that “voting is the civic exercise of the people. Election time is not a day of holiday. It is not a day to sit at home and be watching movies.”

Continuing, he said: “The time has come for you not to keep complaining. It's the best opportunity for all of us. This is the time to make sure that politicians that are not performing are voted out.

“And those who are performing well should be voted into office to continue. It's a civic call for all of us to stand up and do the needful. The power is in your PVCs.”

Yakubu said observation by international observation groups had helped the commission to improve on its elections.

“I want to reassure the international community that we will always learn lessons from international best practices in ensuring that our elections meet not only national expectations but international best practices.

“We always welcome your observations on how elections are being conducted. Your reports actually strengthened the commission in terms of our processes and procedures.

“I am confidence that at the end of your observation this time around there will be new set of powerful recommendations similar to what you did in 2015,” he said.

Yakubu disclosed that the Commonwealth in its report on the 2015 general election made 32 recommendations including the adoption of Simultaneous Accreditation and Voting System.

He said the commission had looked into the recommendations and implemented those within its power, while those requiring amendment of the Constitution and Electoral Act had been sent to the appropriate authorities.

Yakubu said INEC had conducted 194 off season elections with simultaneously accreditation and voting system, which is now part of election guidelines issued by the commission.

He also reassure Nigerians that the election of Feb. 16 and March 2 would be free, fair and credible.

“We are committed to this processes. The only thing the commission derives joy in is ensuring that votes count and that the citizens will determine the leaders of the country at various levels,” he said.

Kikwete said they are in Nigeria to hear from INEC its preparations for election.

The former Tanzanian President said the group would thereafter deploy its members to all parts of the country.

“After the observation the group will come up with its interim report after that we will present out comprehensive report,” he said.

“We were quite young when the issues started so we didn’t really understand what caused the separation. Personally, I was in boarding school and would only come home during vacations.

“All that while, we lived in Takoradi, Ghana but mum was enstooled as a queenmother of Jomoro in the Western Region and moved to settle there. My younger siblings were also in school so they lived with our father and occasionally, we visited our mum during vacations,” he reportedly told The Mirror.
