- Operatives of the Zonal Inspection Squad, Obada, Abeokuta, Ogun state, allegedly tortured a 20-year-old guard, Jubril Mohammed, to death

- The deceased was arrested on suspicion of theft after goods worth millions of naira were stolen from a company warehouse

- The deceased was initially released on bail but was re-arrested when the case was transferred to a different police station where he reportedly met his demise

- The Zone 2 police public relations officer, CSP Dolapo Badmus, says an investigation is being carried out into the matter

A 20-year-old guard, Jubril Mohammed, was allegedly tortured to death by operatives of the Zonal Inspection Squad, Obada, Abeokuta, Ogun state.

The deceased was said to be among some suspects transferred from the Ibafo Police Station in a case of suspected stealing of company products, Punch reports.

Legit.ng gathers that Mohammed, who hails from Borno state, was allegedly beaten to death by detectives investigating the theft, a few days after arriving at the station.

According to a cousin of the deceased, one Saheed Isa, Mohammed had been working as a security guard at the company, Barka Nigeria Limited, Magboro, for about one year.

He said: “The owner of the company, a Lebanese, travelled out of the country. Jubril was called by some co-workers to join them in cleaning the warehouse preparatory to the arrival of their boss.

“That was going on when he was told that some things had been stolen from the warehouse. He asked the co-workers how he could know anything about it when he did not have access to the warehouse keys.

"Later, their boss invited the police and they were taken to Ibafo Police Station on Friday, December 14, 2018.”

Isa further disclosed that his cousin had identified two workers who earlier approached him to be part of a shady deal, even though he denied knowledge of the missing goods during interrogation.

Mohammed reportedly claimed that the men had asked him to either take N300,000, quit the job or get killed.

Isa continued: “He told us that he was afraid and he told other workers. He said he decided to agree with the gang to avoid being killed, but told the workers he confided in that when the gang brings trucks to steal the goods from the company, he would raise the alarm on them and shut the gate so that they could be arrested.

“Unknown to him, the gang had carried out the theft without informing him. That was why he was surprised when he was told goods had been stolen, and he quickly pointed out those he thought were culprits."

According to Isa, the deceased's father, Ibrahim Mohammed had paid N30,000 for the bail and his cousin was released after a few days in custody.

However, the case was transferred to the ZIS office at Abeokuta and the deceased was re-arrested on Thursday, December 20.

Jubril’s father, Ibrahim, said when he visited his son a day after he was re-arrested, he could not recognise him any longer.

The elder Mohammed said: “I went to the station on Friday and after waiting till evening, they brought him to me. I saw a lot of injuries on my son. They had tortured him seriously. He said they told him to confess or else they would kill him.

"He could barely walk. The owner of the company said the goods stolen were valued N7m to N8m.

“When I returned to visit him on Monday, their commander called me into his office and asked me if my son had been sick before, and I said no. He said my son was dead.

“I asked the police to release his corpse to me, but they said they want to conduct an autopsy. I asked if that would make him wake up. I want to bury him. I don’t have anybody to fight for me.”

CSP Dolapo Badmus, the Zone 2 police public relations officer, said an investigation was being carried out into the matter.

The PRO said: “It’s a case of people suspected to have stolen their company goods estimated at N10m. About five of them were arrested. The suspect in question made a voluntary confessional statement to the police and even led operatives to the receiver of the stolen goods; the goods were recovered.

“While the investigation was ongoing, he complained of stomach ache. The father also attested that he had an ulcer. He brought medication to be used, but the police said they cannot administer it. They took him to a hospital where he died.

"They initially thought he was pretending but he was taken to a hospital where he died. An autopsy will be done on the corpse to determine the actual cause of death.”

- Some Americans are visiting Nigerians on a discovery trip

- The millenials are expected to experience first-hand, the limitless opportunities of the country

- It was gathered that the group of Americans would be in Nigeria from Thursday to January 2, 2019

A group of 40 American millennials has embarked on a trip to Nigeria to experience first-hand, the limitless opportunities of the country.

The Director of Discover Gidi, organisers of the annual trip to Nigeria, Mr Ugo Obilo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in New York that the group would be in Nigeria from Thursday to January 2, 2019.

According to him, Nigeria has limitless opportunities for the millennial, aiming to have a great time, adding the trip will increase the number of people that have been to Nigeria.

Obilo said: “We wanted to give them the opportunity to enjoy more of that in different ways with their friends, to see different things culturally.

READ ALSO: Why I am most qualified to criticise Buhari - Obasanjo

“As we started promoting things, a lot of non-Nigerians wanted to come as well. We started out because a lot of young Nigerians are not excited to go back to Nigeria.

“So we wanted to give them the opportunity to go back with young crowd and enjoy and see Nigeria in a new way so that we can generate excitement about it again.

“This is because our generation needs to be the one that is giving back to the community, being able to fund the economy in different ways.

“But to our surprise, a lot of non-Nigerian millennials decided that they wanted to visit and travel there as well.”

According to him, when the 2017 group visited Nigeria, it was made up of half Nigerians and half non-Nigerians and they had a very good time and enjoyed themselves.

Obilo said in 2018, when the organisers started promoting the trip, it was overwhelming that a lot of non-Nigerians wanted to come and see and experience Nigerian culture first-hand.

“So we have about 40 people coming this year. Mostly, they are people that have never been to Nigeria, non-Nigerians themselves.

“We have a well-structured itinerary, a good balance being able to see the culture, enjoy Nigerian nightlife, being able to see a lot of the historical aspects of the country as well.

“We intend to go to the Badagry Slave Port, we’re going to have a cultural night at Terra Cotta, they are doing a Language Lesson, we have a day to go to the beach and enjoy.

“We’re going to Nike Art Gallery, we’re going to Lekki Conservation Centre, we’re going to different places on the Island to see the beaches in the Victoria Island, and a service day on the mainland.”

He said the participants would also have a naming ceremony where each of them would elect to receive a traditional Nigerian name.

According to him, the idea is an effort to afford people of all backgrounds and nationalities the opportunity to experience the beauty of the African Diaspora.

“Out of necessity, we wanted to change the conversation and eliminate reservations individuals have regarding travelling to Africa and African cities.

“As a Nigerian, I wanted to be at the forefront of a movement that would encourage my peers to not only travel to Nigeria, but also lead them to invest in Nigeria’s future,” he said.

Obilo said the annual trip was named ‘Discover Gidi’ as a literal ode to the pre-existing beauty of Nigeria and Lagos, adding, the mission is to allow others to discover the beauty that Nigeria has to offer.

According to him, the trip sets out to appeal specifically to Nigerian-Americans looking to travel home in a curated group-trip format.

HR said there had been an influx of non-Nigerians particularly, millennials of different backgrounds, who wanted to see and experience Nigeria for the first time.

Top comedian Alibaba spotted controlling traffic around midnight in Lagos (video)

Top Nigerian comedian Alibaba is currently trending online for his rather heroic moment which occurred around midnight on December 27, in Lagos.

An Instagram user identified as Anthony I. Ariwaodo recorded the 53-year-old Warri-born royal blood controlling mad traffic at the Lekki-Ajah express way which reportedly spewed on both lanes, making it impossible for anyone to make their way to their destinations easily.

Alibaba took the initiative and single-handedly controlled the apparent madness that could have only gotten worse in the absent of a traffic warden or in this case, a responsible Nigerian like the comedian.

Traffic in Lagos has been an undefeated malady for generations. Many residents often complain of the terrible roads that manage to hold thousands of cars in a bottle neck, making travelling from one location to another either a hazardous or completely impossible task.

It is said to be worse in festive periods where most people are off work and choose to use the free time to catch some fun with their families or simply run errands but however end up spending eons on the road due to uncontrollable traffic

It is why Alibaba's actions are considered heroic because sometimes such traffics can be controlled by a right-thinking individual willing to sacrifice their time to manage things.

Here is the video below:

Meanwhile, just recently, Alibaba celebrated 30 years as a successful comedian. The stand-up comedy pioneer has been a blessing to the industry and blazed an impressive trail for the younger generation looking up to him.

Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state has been warned against prosecuting the founder and Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Dr Paul Enenche.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Wednesday, December 26, gave the warning in a statement by its spokesman, Pastor Bayo Oladeji.

“Any attempt to arrest and harass any of our pastors again will be considered an attempt to silence the voice of the church and reasoning in our nation.

“Let the government define clearly the difference between what is considered hate speech and advocacy for dying victims of continuous killings in Nigeria.

“What do you expect from a church leader whose members and fellow citizens are being killed daily without any satisfactory measures to abate the killings? Are we to keep clapping for government while people are being massacred in cold blood?”

“The main subject of Dr Enenche’s clip which Governor el-Rufai is alleging to be hate speech to us is an outright condemnation of the fate that has befallen the Adara people and Christians in Southern Kaduna through the creation of new emirates namely; Lere, Kagarko and Kujuru. By the creation of these emirates, especially that of Kajuru, the Adara people have been subjugated.

“While we will continue to condemn hate speech by religious leaders and other Nigerians, we cannot stand and watch our respected leaders being set up for molestation, humiliation and prosecution for an unfounded hate speech,” the statement added.

Atiku cannot stand shoulder-to-shoulder with President Buhari in matters of integrity - Festus Keyamo

$

0

- Festus Keyamo has called on Atiku not to compare himself to President Buhari

- The director of the Buhari Campaign Organisation said Atiku benefitted from Nigeria’s failed system

- Keyamo dismissed the former vice president’s corruption allegation against Buhari

Festus Keyamo, the director of strategic communications, President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation(PMBCO), says Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s latest adventure seeking to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in matters of integrity with President Muhammadu Buhari is a political suicide mission.

Keyamo stated this while reacting to a statement credited to Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, disputing the assertion by President Muhammadu Buhari that “the system in Nigeria allows corruption to thrive because the system is slow in tackling corruption".

He said the handlers of the PDP presidential candidate would have tried to steer him away from embarking on political suicide mission, “but alas! They have decided to test the waters."

According to Keyamo, locally and internationally President Buhari stands several miles away from Atiku in matters of integrity.

READ ALSO: Why I am most qualified to criticise Buhari - Obasanjo

He said: “When the President used all his life in public office building a reputation and a name, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar used all his life in public office to build mansions and acquire personal wealth.

“Now judgment day has come when the credentials needed by the Nigerian people for the highest office are not the buildings and wealth but the simple quality of integrity. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar cannot eat his cake and have it.’’

Keyamo described Atiku Abubakar as one of the greatest beneficiaries of the failed system in tackling corruption that was in place before President Buhari took over in 2015.

We know he is aware of this, hence his latest diatribe against President Muhammadu Buhari amounts to nothing but disgusting grandstanding and an attempt to mock the system.

“If the system in Nigeria was indeed working, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would not have acquired substantial shares in INTELS in clear conflict of his duties as a Customs Officer whilst in office. Those shares would have belonged to the Nigerian people by now.

“If the system in Nigeria was indeed working, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would not have run a monopolistic company called INTELS all these years, ripping off the Nigerian people and the Nigerian State before Muhammadu Buhari came and broke that monopoly.

“If the system was working, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would have been prosecuted and jailed for various acts of corruption and abuse of office after he left office as Vice President, some of which are:

(a) For himself and his boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo, granting themselves licenses to build universities as President and Vice President whilst in office in clear breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers. Those Universities would have been probed, seized and transferred to the Nigeria State and the Nigerian people by now.

“(b) Laundering slush funds to the United States of America using phony companies, part of which was used to fund his present American University in Adamawa State through which he is also extorting Nigerians through exorbitant fees.

“It is public knowledge that this indictment is contained in a US Congressional Report that has led to the prosecution and conviction of his accomplices in the US, which are William Jefferson and Siemens.

“They were convicted under a system that works, whilst he has been walking free in Nigeria and even aspiring to the highest office in the land. It is also public knowledge that his ban from entering the United States was as a result of these indictments.

(c) His indictment and recommendation for prosecution by the Report of the EFCC over the PTDF scandal whilst he was Vice President," he said.

Keyamo also underscored the case filed against Atiku Abubakar by some public spirited Nigerians alleging that Abubakar never paid his Personal Income Taxes as at when due, yet he wanted to ‘get Nigeria working again’.

Keyamo therefore challenged him to publicly display his Personal Income Tax receipts for the three years preceding 2018 to show that he did not just run to FIRS in 2018 to pay his backlog of Personal Income Taxes.

For the information of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, President Muhammadu Buhari’s gallant efforts in tackling corruption headlong has led to the conviction of the President’s own party men and ex-Governors who served under PDP and for acts they committed whilst in PDP," he said.

He added that 703 persons and institutions had been convicted by the EFCC under the watch of President Buhari since 2015.

According to him, the biggest recoveries of stolen public funds in the history of Nigeria are being carried out by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He stated that these recoveries were made from principally Abubakar’s party men who now wish to lead Nigeria with him. He also listed some of these recoveries/seizures/forfeitures (interim and final).

They include 407 mansions since 2015; N794 billion, over 261 million dollars, 1.1 million Pounds Sterling, 8.1 Million Euros, 259 Automobiles and a fully functional hospital, St. Solomon Health Care Centre at 24, Adeniyi Jones Street, Ikeja Lagos.

He also urged the PDP to stop making wild, unsubstantiated allegations of corruption without a modicum of proof.

We have no time to respond to any allegation by the PDP without the backing of some kind of document or proof.

“When we see some scintilla of proof, we shall respond appropriately. And that is how we have treated the recent allegation of acquisition of shares in Etisalat and Keystone Bank by some supposed ‘family members’ of the President. No name was mentioned and no document was shown," he said.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has vowed to retrieve all stolen fund. The president said that though that some critics refer to hm as 'baba go slow' in the manner he fights corruption, he lamented that the slow judicial system has hampered the fight against the scourge.

Call for Buhari's disqualification is expression of frustration - Buhari Media Organisation blasts Galadima

$

- The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has responded to the call of Alhaji Buba Galadima for the disqualification of the president ahead of 2019 polls

- The BMO described the remarks of Galadima, who is the PDP's campaign spokesman as an expression of his frustration

- It also said that Galadima's comments are only figments of his imagination, claiming that the president is a man with a heart of gold

The call by Alhaji Buba Galadima, the spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s campaign organization, for the disqualification of President Muhammadu Buhari as the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 polls has been described by the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) as an expression of his “frustration and crass ignorance”.

The chairman of the BMO, Niyi Akinsiju, and his secretary, Cassidy Madueke, in a statement said that Galadima is uninformed about the finer points of the electoral act which is why he is finding fault with N100 individual donation of members of an association, Leadership reports.

READ ALSO: NAIJ.com upgrades to Legit.ng: a letter from our Editor-in-Chief Bayo Olupohunda

The statement partly read: “The association of farmers and fertilizer producers are not corporate entities and neither are they registered corporations, and certainly not captured in the Electoral Act.

"So for Galadima, a supposedly educated person and politician to ask for disqualification of president Buhari on the basis of their donation, is engagement in petty talks.

“Is Galadima rewriting the law on who and what to contribute to an electioneering campaign fund? He apparently forgets that President Buhari enjoys mass appeal and popularity among the Nigerian poor and downtrodden who he is feverishly elevating on to higher economic levels from the extreme poverty to which they were pushed into by the collective irresponsibility of the PDP governments of many years.“

The organisation said that Buba Galadima confused individual financial support with corporate donation, saying: “We advise this gentleman to keep his anger under control so that such anger should not be allowed to contaminate the political space.”

Moreover, it referred to Galadima's claim that security agencies were after the lawmakers who booed the president at his presentation of the 2019 budget proposal “as figment of his imagination and the product of a troubled mind.

“Obviously, PDP elements see defeat at the 2019 election staring them in face and they are jittery. The colossal failure of their presidential campaign flag- off in three geographical zones in the country, the groundswell of popular acclaim of President Muhammadu Buhari achievements all over the country have put the PDP under tremendous pressure and they have become desperadoes”.

The BMO remarked that despite Galadima's inflammatory comments, President Buhari still has his (Galadima’s) daughter as one of his presidential aides.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Galadima had accused Buhari of encouraging corruption in his administration claiming his relatives are now wealthier.

Speaking on Wednesday, December 26, Galadima alleged that some individuals close to Buhari, who were poor in 2015 when the president assumed office have now become billionaires.

Legit.ng gathers that officials of the State Fire Service, however, arrived on the scene and put out the fire.

Ogara, in reaction to the incident, claimed that the attackers had burnt the two buses with the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). He, however, said he had been in Lagos at the time of the attack.

He said: “Improvised Explosive Device, IED bomb, is not a matter a civilian like me can intervene. The police and DSS will investigate that matter.

“Bomb is a military hardware. It’s not something civilians can discuss and point accusing fingers at any person; it’s a very serious matter.”

The incident was reportedly confirmed by the police spokesman in the state, Ebere Amaraizu, who said investigations have commenced into the matter.

He said: “It was gathered that in the early hours of 23/12/18, a fire incident had allegedly occurred at Ogara APC campaign office where two buses allegedly got burnt.

“However, the prompt intervention of the police operatives and fire service prevented its escalation and further destruction as the fire was promptly extinguished."

Ogara, who claims to be the duly elected Enugu APC governorship candidate for the 2019 election, is in court to challenge the party for publishing the name of a former senator, Ayogu Eze, as its candidate.

Hearing on the matter has been fixed for January 10 at an Abuja Federal High Court.

Nigerians react to video of couple who ignore young housemaid while enjoying ice cream and pizza at a Lagos restaurant

Life is a mystery; this is one fact that can never be overlooked. It's the festive season and generally it is assumed that during this period, all forms of evils, ills and wrong attitudes towards others are meant to disappear. But then, it has been proven over time that even during the period of funfair and love, hatred can still reign supreme.

In line with this thought, a video that recently went viral has shown just how the yuletide period is never quite an excuse for anyone to not do something wrong. In the viral footage captured by a woman, a young girl was supposedly maltreated.

Based on what the clip showed, the said girl who is still likely in her childhood years had accompanied a family to a popular restaurant located in Abule Egba, Lagos. The couple looked well dressed in matching outfits just as their children looked good in their ready made attires.

Apparently, they had come into the eatery to celebrate the festive season, and to this effect, they ordered for several sort of assorted meals - Pizza, ice-cream, chicken wings. Without hesitation, they dug into the food. But they forgot the little girl they had brought along, or better put, they ignored her.

This young girl who was wearing a casual black dress was made to sit at another table while the family was enjoying their feast. She stared at them hungrily but they paid no attention to her. Even the young kids of the couple were so caught up in their meal that they totally forgot about the girl.

In the video, the woman who had captured the footage could be heard talking. She could not help but assume that the young, neglected kid was the family's housemaid, and clearly, she was very pissed that they had abandoned the lady in such way.

Because of this, she took to sharing the footage on social media and adding this telling caption: "Some Nigerians are just so cruel , the Government is not only the problem of the country, the people also are. Why do this to a child on boxing day? We are the most religious and most ungodly people on earth. Chai feel like kicking that table."
