Breaking: Losing election not end of political career - Oshiomhole tells members

The All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, has a word of consolation for party members, who are aggrieved over the conduct of the primaries.

“Losing one nomination does not amount to the end of their political career”, Oshiomhole said in Abuja on Monday, December 10.

He urged all those who lost nominations to take a cue from President Muhammadu Buhari, who lost three times before finally coming to power, The Nation reports.

READ ALSO: NAIJ.com upgrades to Legit.ng: a letter from our Editor-in-Chief Bayo Olupohunda

Receiving the report of the party’s reconciliation committee for the northeast from Nasarawa state governor, Tanko Al-Makura, Oshiohmole said: “Although democracy was both attractive and problematic, it remains the best form of governing a people.”

Confidence that the APC would emerge stronger from the crisis of the primaries for 2019 polls, Oshiomhole said:“Thank you for making quality recommendations that will help us to address what has happened and talk people out of their mood and get them to rededicate themselves to the party, but also to learn one or two lesson in the future because this is not the last time we are going to conduct elections and we will be having more than one person participating therefore the possibility of one or more persons not winning the position they applied for.

“You are the first to submit a formal report to us and we are very grateful. I assure you that to justify the time and effort you have invested, and the time spent by the people and the confidence they have reposed in our party and your committee by appearing before you, we will study this report and NWC Will act on it as quickly as possible.

“It is quite reassuring that people recognise that there is no house where there are no grievances. What matters is whether the family has the competence to manage disagreement within the family.

“The only place where there is no disagreement is heaven and since none of us has been there, we can’t even speak to what happens there. But in the real world, people have a right to feel the way they feel. They may be right, they may be wrong, but it is all part of democracy.

“I read a lot of things in the media, some of which are not quite informed. The truth is that if you look at the issue of political parties around the world, the United Kingdom (UK) for example, the Labour Party is more prone to internal contestations than the Conservative.

“The more democratic and liberal a political party is, the more freedom that people feel that they cannot be sanctioned and so, you will have such discordant voices.

“We can learn from those voices and run a better party and a better system in the future. No matter what anybody wants to say, our party is leading by example.”

“For example, we are the only party that allows people to contest election against a sitting governor. All the sitting governors of the PDP had automatic tickets and so, you are not even allowed to murmur about your governor.

“But here, in obedience to our rules, we allowed people wishing to challenge sitting governors to do so and in one case, a governor could not return.

“Democracy is an attractive wind but also problematic. But like they say, it is still the best way to run a system and a country. So, I am very confident that we are going forward; we are going to win this election. The whole essence of this reconciliation is to let people know that the fact that you lost one nomination submit the end of your political future.

“We have the best teacher in our family in person of President Buhari who contested elections three times and lost. He almost gave up, hotness encouraged not to give up. He went for the fourth time and won. He has thought is that this process is only for long distance runners and not a 100 meters dash.

“Secondly, if our primary purpose for seeking nomination and getting elected is to serve the people, and improve on the quality of life, then even if 20 of us file out to contest election as governor, we know ab-initio that only one person will be elected even if all 20 are angels.

“But if democracy is working and working well, that one person that emerged will govern in such a way that will add value to the quality of life of every citizen because the main objective is to improve the quality of life of the people.

“At the end of the day, the deliverable is what will change as a result of my membership of the APC. I am excited that you said people have not decamped and have confidence in the leadership of the party.”

Governor Al-Makura on his part said that the committee was glad to report that no aggrieved members in their area of coverage decamped but have confidence in the leadership of the party.

Al-Makura stated: “Immediately after our inauguration and considering the fact that there no time, we immediately hit the ground running. Considering the area to be covered, the committee decided to cluster the area into three. Maiduguri played host to Borno and Yobe; Bauchi played host to Bauchi and Gombe; and Yola played host to Adamawa and Taraba.

“We are pleased to inform the National Working Committee that we were impressed by the response we received across the zone. It showed commitment and faithfulness of members of our party and their confidence not only on our committee, but the leadership of the party.”

We're not after Rivers government - EFCC

- The EFCC has denied claims that it is after the Rivers state government

- The commission said it is only focused on fighting corruption for accountability

- According to the commission, Nigerians must cease to pay lip service to the anti-graft war, but be practical in their attitude towards eradicating the menace from all segments of the polity

Nigeria's anti-graft agency has debunked claims that it is targeting the Rivers state government in its war against corruption across the country.

The zonal head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Port Harcourt office, Nnaghe Itam, said the commission is only fighting for accountability.

Itam said the commission would also not relent on the fight until victory is achieved.

“The war is ongoing to force corruption out of Nigeria. It is not a fight against the Rivers State government; it is a fight for good governance and transparency. It is a fight for accountability. It is a fight for development and to ensure that real dividends of democracy are delivered to the people," Itam said.

Itam assertion followed a recent call by the commissioner of information and communications for Rivers state, Emma Okah, on EFCC to leave the state alone.

Okah urged the commission to focus on its duties rather than investigate affairs of the state including alleged withdrawal of N170 billion from the state’s account by the Nyesom Wike led administration.

However, in his reaction, the EFCC's chairman, Ibrahim Magu, called on Nigerians not pay lip service to the anti-graft war, but be practical in their attitude towards eradicating the menace from all segments of the polity.

Magu said: “Your ‘No’ must not only be heard but much more be seen and felt through a conscious determination to resist attempts by individuals, organisations and systems to do that which negates integrity, transparency, honesty and equality."

He also said that public officers who have been identified as corrupt among the people must neither be celebrated nor given chieftaincy titles.

The EFCC chairman urged Nigerians to embrace the whistle-blower policy of the federal government as an avenue to recover stolen funds for government and earn legitimate income.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the final forfeiture of the sum of N1.9 billion belonging to billionaire business woman Muinat Bola Shagaya to the EFCC.

The forfeiture is part of the process in the unfolding investigations in allegations of money laundering against Shagaya and a former first lady Patience Jonathan.

- Presidency has replied former president Olusegun Obasanjo over his comment on President Muhammadu Buhari

- In a statement by minister of information, Lai-Mohammad, presidency said it was not bothered about the ex-president's endorsement of Atiku Abubakar

- It also said the former president was not properly informed about the achievements of the currently administration

In a counter reaction trailing the comment and tag of incompetence placed on President Buhari-led administration by former president Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president has been the subject of attacks from presidency.

The Nation reports that the minister of information and culture, Lai-Mohammed, replying to Obasanjo's comment, said the former president was not properly briefed as regards the wave of development and success recorded by the present administration.

Legit.ng gathers that the information minister, who said Obasanjo was free to support and endorse any candidate ahead for the coming polls, cautioned the former president against commenting on matters he lacked knowledge about.

He said: “With due respect to the former president Obasanjo, actually, it is his constitutional right to support any candidate of his choice and we urge him to go out and campaign vigorously for any candidate that he wants to support.

“I don’t think the former president has hidden his preference for the former vice president Atiku Abubakar, and I think we all wish him the very best of luck. I want to assure you that his candidate would be defeated roundly and comprehensively.

“We welcome him. It is not about endorsement. Endorsement doesn’t win elections. We wish him the best of luck; nobody is asking him not to support anybody, but believe me, he will be defeated roundly and comprehensively.”

Lai-Mohammad used the platform to remind Obasanjo of the success and achievements of the current administration on security and fight against graft.

He said: “The facts are all there: on corruption, this government has done more than any government in the history of this country to fight corruption.

“Although it is endemic and global, but when you look at the kind of institutional reforms this government has put in place, you cannot doubt its sincerity and commitment to fighting corruption.

“Corruption is not just about prosecuting and jailing people; it is more about what you have put in place to prevent people from looting the treasury. This is what this government has done, I would say, more than any government in the history of this country."

According to the minister, federal government has done commendably well in terms of cutting waste and funds management through the single treasury account innovation.

“I will start with the Treasury Single Account (TSA). The TSA was not initiated by this government. It is only this government that has the political courage and will to implement it. Before we came in, there were over 22,000 various accounts of government in various banks in Nigeria."

- The managing director of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said work is ongoing towards expansion of its delivery capacity to 20,000 megawatts by 2021

- Usman Mohammed says the transmission company is on track in achieving this goal

- Mohammed said Nigeria’s transmission capacity presently stands at 8,100 megawatts and only about 5,000 megawatts can be taken up by the DISCOs

The TCN has said that it plans to expand its delivery capacity to 20,000 megawatts by 2021. This was disclosed at the Presidential Villa in Abuja by its managing director, Usman Mohammed, who urged various distribution companies (DISCOS) in Nigeria to provide electricity meters for consumers, The Nation reports.

He said: “We have established transmission, rehabilitation and expansion programme. The main objective of this is to rehabilitate, stabilise and expand the delivery capacity of TCN to at least 20,000 megawatts by 2021 and we are on track.

Legit.ng gathers that Mohammed stated that distribution of meters for consumers was part of measures to solve the nations's power challenges.

He said: “Besides, the excuse of consumers being too poor to afford electricity tariffs does not really hold water, and this can be confirmed if they are provided with meters to save them from the widespread arbitrariness of estimated billing.”

Mohammed said consumers should be allowed pay for only the amount of electricity they consume.

According to him, Nigeria’s transmission capacity presently stands at 8,100 megawatts. He said only about 5,000 megawatts can be taken up by the DISCOs.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Power for All (PA), an international organisation that preaches sustainable power generation across many African countries, expressed sadness that no fewer than 93 million Nigerians lacked access to sustainable power supply in the country.

The organisation, through its director who also doubles as the managing director of Clean Technology, Ifeoma Malu, condemned the poor power supply across the country despite the high electricity charge by the power-generating company of the country.

Nwosu, who dumped the APC to seek election under the AA, said even though he was forced to leave the ruling party, his anger with the party does not concern his level of support for Buhari.

“Whether they blackmail us or not, the truth is that we have made up our minds to support President Buhari.

"If I will not be supporting President Buhari, I won’t be putting his pictures on my billboards and campaign posters, otherwise who am I deceiving.

"We have together with the governor of the state, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, made up our mind to support President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 and nothing can change that.

“In 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari won with a wide margin in my Eziama-Obire ward and in the 2019 election, despite being the governorship candidate of the Action Alliance, I will deliver President Buhari in my ward but those running to Abuja to blackmail me cannot convince a single person to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari.

“All those carrying the blackmail should come out and show us their supporters that will vote for President Buhari; all they are interested in is to use the president’s name and compromise the election because they know that they don’t stand a chance in a free and fair election but that will not work in Imo state,” Nwosu said.

Nwosu said those planning to rig the 2019 election would be disappointed.

“We have implicit trust in the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under Marmood Yakubu to deliver a credible election. So those relying on rigging and other malpractices will fail. Imolites will resist any attempt to steal their mandate, the people’s vote must count.

“In fact anybody thinking of rigging the 2019 election is making a big mistake because we will resist it, the youths of Imo state will resist it, the women and the leaders of the state will resist, if you are not popular, you are not popular and INEC knows that it is not possible to write result in Imo state. People should know that the era of sitting at home and writing results is gone,” he said.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Ugwumba Uche Nwosu recently cleared the air on the agreement between him and Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state before he was endorsed as the preferred successor.

Nwosu said: "My emergence as the governor's preferred candidate was not discussed in a room between me and the governor and some close members of the family or political structure, but in a hall, with the greater majority of party members and Imo people.

"The governor had some other people in mind outside me, but he also wanted someone who can win election and someone who is prepared enough for the task of governance. He didn't want to support someone he likes so much, but someone who can work for Imo people."

1. Saheed Oniloyi and Olashile Ali - N8 million

Saheed Oniloyi and Olashile Ali are lucky Bet9ja winners who won together an overall sum of 8 mln Naira) with a 400 Naira stake.

The latest winners seem to be quite experienced in football betting as they were able to utilize their knowledge of football bets and forecast the outcome of some matches of the European football league and some Italian soccer league. The winning tickets were being verified by Bet9ja and there was found no fraud.

In one of the interviews, right after the prize was declared, Saheed Oniloyi said that he was praying at the moment when another person nodded to him that his betting ticket has won the prize.

“I was praying when somebody advised me that the past team on my ticket won their match. I was startled because I couldn’t believe that my fortune has adjusted. Now I am a millionaire even though I have generally been really blessed in all my endeavour”.

His friend and fellow winner of the Bet9ja prize Olashile Ali was so happy that he even couldn’t express his pleasure:

“I don’t know what to say for now. I am just as well delighted and I cannot explain to it all till I sleep in excess of it. It is an excellent day in my life”.

“Bet9ja is the top betting brand when it will come to creating large payback times like this to our gamers. You enjoy on our system, you acquire, we pay. No stories. Bet9ja’s reputation is dependent on prompt payment and our gamers know this. We don’t squander time”.

A horrible story of Bet9ja bet9ja winners in 2018

One of the latest Bet9ja winners 2018 was heard to win several million Naira, the precise amount of the prize was not estimated. According to different sources, it was between about 7 million and 11 million Naira. A few days after he won the prize, on a Saturday morning, Joseph Vincent Achuku was murdered. His lifeless body was found in Lafia, lying on the road near the Federal University.

Different sources claimed that the reason for his awful murder was money. The Bet9ja winner’s life was taken by people who, according to his relatives, were trying to demand a part of the prize money in exchange for his safety and life.

His relatives told to the police officers who arrived at the place of murder that some indiividuals kept an eye on him since the time he won the Bet9ja bet. The family claimed that the boy was attacked magically and those friends probably put some diabolical stuff into Joseph Vincent’s pocket which caused abnormal behaviour. The relatives called a Christian priest. He prayed for Joseph and he discovered something in his pocket that proved that he was influenced diabolically.

It is a common thing to see Nigerian religious leaders living the extravagant lifestyles despite the controversy that usually trails them. Well, it appears Nigeria isn't the only country with religious leaders who've got proclivity for the good life.

A Russian priest, father Vyacheslav Baskakov, is currently in trouble after he took to his Instagram page to show off his designer items. Although the post has since been taken down, the screenshots of Baskakov in his frock, displaying his Louis Vuitton bags and Gucci shoes have since gone viral.

According to an Orthodox Church spokesman, Baskakov is going to face disciplinary committee."Such actions are not acceptable. The Church requires modesty and temperance of its representatives," the spokesman for Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, Alexander Volkov, revealed.

Although the photo of Kirill was eventually doctored on the church's website to erase his watch, many internet users were not fooled as the reflection of the watch on the table still remained.

A Nigerian man named @BrianJDennis on Twitter has taken to sharing an experience, which in this time and age, is worth a million naira and more. He narrated how a particular stranger had performed an act of kindness which was very unanticipated and surprising.

The said man had returned his phone to him after he accidentally misplaced it in an unlikely location. Judging by its brand (Samsung S8), the mobile device was very expensive, and thus, it could have been easily traded if the stranger had decided not to return it.

According to the Twitter user, he had forgotten this phone in a Keke Napep which he had boarded. Upon alighting and realising that his phone was not with him, he was thrown into great distress given that his phone did not even have a password.

But surprisingly, an unknown man who had boarded the tricycle with him beeped him up by some means, asked to meet up with him and handed his phone back to him.

See the full post below:

"I forgot my Samsung S8 in a Keke and this guy found it, told me where to meet him and gave it to me. This is a big deal for me because the phone wasn't even passworded. His name is Sunday Omoru. Another Nigerian with more integrity than President Buhari."

Arsenal join Liverpool in race to sign French football star as Aaron Ramsey's 'replacement'

- Arsenal seem to have found a replacement for Aaron Ramsey whose contract expires next year

- They are plotting to beat fellow EPL sides Liverpool and Man City to the signature of Lyon star Houssem Aouar

- He has been superb for his French side since the start of this season scoring five goals in all competitions so far

Arsenal have reportedly jumped in the chase to land French youngster Houssem Aouar as a replacement for outgoing Aaron Ramsey.

The 27-year-old's current deal expires at the end of this season but the Gunners chief are not willing to hand him an extension.

READ ALSO: Chelsea suspend 4 fans who racially abused Raheem Sterling in Man City's win

However, Unai Emery has made the Olympique Lyon midfielder priority signing when the January transfer window opens.

Aouar has scored five goals and created one assist in 16 French League matches this season - a feat that has attracted interests from Liverpool and Manchester City.

According to SunSport, the 20-year-old is an all round midfielder who came through ranks in the French League.

The publication also revealed that Pep Guardiola was impressed with the youngster's performance in their 2-2 Champions League draw late last month.

PAY ATTENTION: Become a member of the leading sports Facebook group 'Naija Football Fan Zone'

Meanwhile, City chiefs are set to make contact with the French side to enquire about the young midfielder.

France Football reports that Arsenal are particularly keen, as Emery knows all about the youngster's versatility from his spell at Paris Saint-Germain and thinks he would be a boost to his new side.

While Arsenal may have gone on an impressive unbeaten run, they are currently just outside of a European spot.

The Gunners would need the financial boost of a Champions League spot in order to secure the youngster's services, as a £40 million transfer fee has been floated for Aouar.

Whereas City have deeper pockets and the pull of Guardiola.

The French midfielder has made his admiration for the City coach known, he said: "He's a fascinating coach with convictions and motivations, a coach who knows what he wants.

"We all share the same views about football, but I also share his opinions and the way he plays with his team. "So it would be nice to be coached by someone like him."

The Lyon hotshot was stopped by Guardiola in the tunnel after their teams met, as the Spaniard wanted to show his appreciation for Aouar's performance, where he had dictated the midfield with 62 passes and five tacklers.

PAY ATTENTION: NAIJ.com upgrades to Legit.ng

Guardiola went on a charm offensive in his press conference after the game, he said: "Houssem Aouar is a very good player, he is incredible.

"We talk a lot about Ndombele but Aouar is also excellent. He’s always very calm with the ball at his feet, with an excellent technical quality.

Aouar isn't the only player that Premier League clubs could end up fighting over.

Arsenal and Liverpool have both been monitoring the situation between Ousmane Dembele and Barcelona over the past few months.

But Lionel Messi appear to discourage any further talk over his future this weekend when he said "we need Dembele."

Legit.ng earlier reported that Premier League side Chelsea were ready to sign Olympique Lyonnais star Houssem Aouar.

French media outfit RMC Sport revealed that the midfielder has been identified by the Blues boss Maurizio Sarri as a January target.

The 20-year-old has been in amazing form in club competitions this season scoring five Ligue 1 goals and making three assists in the Champions League.
