Nzu edible clay

The Igbo people of Nigeria call ‘nzu’ what is commonly identified as calabash chalk. Other Nigerian tribes also name this chalk other titles such as ‘eko’ and ‘ndom.’ Even if you don’t live in Africa, you can come across numerous listings about nzu edible clay and other types of chalk and clay that are meant for use as ‘food supplement.’

What is Nzu made of? Nzu is nothing but a geophagic material, and many people believe that eating chalk and soil can be good for losing weight, during pregnancy, for diarrhea treatment, and simple pleasure.

You can also read many posts and comments about nzu edible clay that is used as weight loss treatment, for a healthier body, and other things. Some people get addicted to such ‘junk food’ and others are afraid to taste it because of the possible side effects of eating nzu.

Who is wrong? Who is right?

Surprised lady

Is eating clay bad for you?

Today many famous people speak about nzu edible clay and other clay eating habits. According to medicaldaily.com, actress Shailene Woodley assures that she has a habit of clay consumption to improve her overall body health, and she learnt about such a tradition from an African man.

While some people are sure that eating a teaspoon of clay per day might not be bad for you because this way your body cells can get repaired and remineralized in a natural way, you should understand that the number of side effects of eating nzu might be the way bigger than the number of benefits you can get (such as body detoxification and cleaning, as some people think).

Still, many experts believe that the tradition to consume clay began in some African cultures because locals lacked calcium, iron and other minerals in their everyday diet and supplemented those elements by eating clay and dirt. However, getting your daily amount of useful nutrients should not be a big problem in the 21st century.

If you crave for clay, you may have a deficit of some elements and minerals in your body. And instead of being aware of what is going on with your body you start to consume chalk or clay in large quantities. Thus, it is always important to discuss with your doctor how to improve your health instead of getting a pile of nzu and blindly consuming it.

2. Potential danger of poisoning

In case this is not a good-quality product, your body might get lead and arsenic consequences, dangerous bacteria, and other ‘weird surprises’ that are hidden in the soil and dirt. 3. Possible health issues

Firstly, this can lead to your body losing iron and potassium that are must-have for your healthy life. Secondly, you can experience weakness in your muscles, get skin issues and difficulty with breathing. Another consequence you can experience is the intestinal blockage.

4. Problems for pregnant women and nursing mothers

It is necessary to avoid the consumption of edible chalk due to the possible side effect of nzu for pregnant ladies and women who are breastfeeding their babies. While not much is known about the effect of nzu edible clay for short-term usage, this product can easily lead to high blood pressure risks and make the woman swell really badly. Besides, you might experience anemia if you consume clay regularly.

5. Addiction

Before we answer the question, ‘Is eating clay bad for you?’ we should note that one of the most unpleasant side effects of nzu oral consumption is the addiction it can cause. Those women who start eating clay everyday become addicted. According to health-e.org.za, some women who got addicted to eating clay assure that they are not able to stop because they feel their meal is incomplete without soil in it. Thus, it can become a bad habit which can also potentially result in the dangers of eating nzu described above.

Weight loss and dangers of eating nzu

Can eating nzu make me lose weight?

There are no proven results that you will lose excess weight if you start eating nzu. It is just a belief in some countries where people still eat earth elements instead of taking vitamins and minerals from fruit and vegetables.

Those Nigerians who wish to lose weight should consult their doctors and start exercising and living a healthy lifestyle. This is the only way to become healthy and slim.

We have talked about side effects and dangers of eating nzu. This is just a world trend that is called ‘ridiculous’ by many experts.

The winner of the governorship rerun election held on Thursday, September 27, in Osun state, Gboyega Isiaka Oyetola, has been sworn-in as the governor of the state.

Oyetola, who was the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) defeated his closest rival and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ademola Adeleke, during a rerun election held on Thursday, November 27.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the returning officer, Prof Joseph Fuwape, declared Oyetola the winner of the election after the collation of the results of the supplementary election in seven polling units.

Oyetola polled a total of 255,505 votes to emerge the winner of the poll while the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled a total of 255,023 votes to come second in the contest.

Adeleke had scored the highest number of votes in the first ballot but the INEC ordered a rerun because the number of cancelled votes in the seven polling units was far higher than the margin by which Adeleke beat the runner-up.

Nigerian Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin shortlisted for CNN's hero of the year award

- Nigeria has once again been portrayed in positive lights on the international scene in the area of science and technology

- Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin, a computer programmer has been nominated as Nigeria’s first CNN hero award recipient

- Ajayi-Akinfolarin uses her computer training establishment, Girls Coding, to transform and empower young females in Nigeria

Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin, a computer programmer, who lost her mother at age four, has remained dogged in clinching her dreams, despite the odds that assailed her growing days.

Akinfolarin was recently nominated as Nigeria’s first CNN hero, a television special created by the news network to honour individuals who make exceptional contributions to humanity in different localities.

READ ALSO: NAIJ.com upgrades to Legit.ng: a letter from our Editor-in-Chief Bayo Olupohunda

Using Girls Coding, a a non-profit programme run by her Pearls Africa Foundation, Ajayi-Akinfolarin seeks to educate and excite young female about computer programming.

Right from its inception in 2012, the group has helped not less than 400 disadvantaged girls gain the technical skills and confidence for transformation and empowerment.

Akinfolarin had to sacrifice a booming IT consulting job, to start Pearls Africa Foundation. Realising how few women worked in this growing field, she had done her utmost to bridge the gap.

Speaking with CNN about life and work, she recalled that growing up was tough for her, after losing her mother and being often beaten by her father.

She said: “Life was just crazy. I learned to fend for myself. Learning to type and modify text in Microsoft Word was just beautiful. But I really discovered my love for computers when I joined an IT firm as an intern after high school.”

“When I got introduced to the world of computer programming, I was just natural with it. It just flowed. It's all about solving problems. I never knew that I'd be looking for solutions to problems regarding less privileged girls. That is what GirlsCoding is all about.”

“For example, one project that I really like is called Hope Baskets. The girls wanted to get beggars off the streets, so they created a website to be a bridge between the rich and the poor.

"They wanted a way where someone can declutter their house and give them a call. Then they take what they're getting rid of — food, clothing, educational materials — and give it to those in need.

“We have another project called Break the Blade, about stopping female circumcision. These girls believe there is a lot of ignorance about this and want to be ambassadors on this issue. Eventually, they want to have a wristband where you can press a button and it calls local authorities to come if FGM is about to take place.

“The fact that they can create solutions to problems makes them feel bold. It is no longer about just coding.”

“We'd also give them a chance to incubate their ideas about how to solve problems in their communities and learn how to pitch them. You could call it a bigger version of what we are currently doing.

“We want girls to be creators of tech, not mere users. Watching them write code is beautiful. Many of them never touched a computer before they got here. It's mind-blowing. The joy on their faces, that's more than money. I can't buy it.”

Sharon Okpoe is one of Ajayi-Akinfolarin’s several, living testimonies. Okpoe has lived her entire 17 years in Makoko, which is known as the world's largest "floating slum" built on a lagoon in Lagos state.

Okpoe's father is a fisherman, and her mother sells smoked fish, eking out a living on the fringes of Africa's largest city.

Ajayi-Akinfolarin said: “When I went to Makoko for the first time, I was surprised to see the living conditions of human beings.

"Most girls are trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty. Many of them are not thinking education, a plan for the future. Technology is a space that's dominated by men. Why should we leave that to guys? I believe girls need opportunities."

On many occasions, girls like Okpoe get a glimpse of another world when they attend classes. After school and during the summer, dozens of girls ages 10 to 17 get trained in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python and Scratch. Students come from slums or other challenging circumstances, such as orphanages, correctional homes and even a camp for those who've had to flee Boko Haram.

"I believe you can still find diamonds in these places. They need to be shown another life," she said.

One out of the many ways through which Girls Coding achieves this is by taking the students to visit tech companies — not only showing them what technology can do, but helping them visualize themselves joining the industry. Okpoe, for one, has taken this to heart.

She helped create an app called Makoko Fresh that went live this summer, enabling fishermen like her father to sell seafood directly to customers. She wants to become a software engineer and hopes to study computer science at Harvard.

She said: "One thing I want my girls to hold onto is, regardless of where they are coming from, they can make it. They are coders. They are thinkers. Their future is bright.”

CNN Heroes was launched in 2007. In 2014, the programme was hosted by Anderson Cooper. Nominees are introduced during the fall of each year and the audience is encouraged to vote online for the CNN Hero of the Year.

Not less than ten recipients are honoured and each receive USD$50,000 ($25,000 in 2014). The top recipient is chosen as the CNN Hero of the Year and receives an additional USD$250,000 ($100,000 in 2014) to continue their work.

ASUU strike: Parents, students call on federal government to speedily intervene

- As ASUU strike lingers on, some parents and students have called on the federal government to speedily intervene

- They expressed displeasure over the ongoing strike, saying the strike is causing a lot of problems for students

- A parent, David Onilede, says the strike is worrisome, adding that the productivity of the students will be affected as it lingers on

Some parents and students on Tuesday, November 27, urged the federal government to speedily intervene and resolve the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the parents expressed worry over the constant strikes embarked upon by the university lecturers’ union.

Legit.ng gathers that on Monday, November 26, the federal government and ASUU had a meeting to resolve their agreement in order to suspend the lecturers’ strike.

However, the meeting that reportedly started at about 5 p.m. at the federal ministry of education ended in another deadlock.

A parent, Eunice John, said: “It is a pity what our government and ASUU is doing to this to our children who have been forced once again out of school. We know that many of the leaders have their children either studying in private universities or in other schools overseas, that is why they can always keep our children out of school.

“Many parents are struggling to pay school fees of their wards to keep them in school and out of the streets, yet these children are forced to come home and some now engage in various vices. That is not the only problem, when their studies are disrupted, it affects them; imagine those who were in the middle of writing examinations having that flow disrupted."

‎John pleaded with the federal government and ASUU to reach an agreement that would end the strike and ultimately help improve the education sector.

David Onilede, another parent, said the strike was worrisome adding that it would affect the productivity of the students.

He said: “I am worried at the sustained strike by ASUU. As a parent, the capacity of our children for productive interaction with their studies is being jeopardised.

“I do not trust the FG ‘s negotiating team; it seems that it is fixated on commercialising education at the tertiary level; ASUU should resist this. ASUU too should be more flexible in their obsession with earned allowances; it portrays their struggles as selfish."

Jumoke Yusuf, a public servant, said that the constant and protracted lecturers’ strikes had marred the country’s university system, as continuous breaks in the learning process had negatively affected the students.

She said: “This strike is affecting the students and even we the parents because unexpectedly these children are coming home which they did not plan for.

“That is not the main issue because you cannot stop your children from coming home no matter what.

“The issue is that these incessant strikes are actually causing a lot of problems for these children in the sense that they just stay too long in school."

Esther Ajayi, a student ‎at the Nasarawa State University, said the strike had reduced her morale.

‎She said: ”I paid my fees for admission for a master’s degree programme and was excited and ready to go to school, however, this strike has dampened my hope of finishing within the stipulated time. We want the federal government to dialogue with ASUU to end this continuous strike.

“It is not only sad that children of the masses try to be beat all odds to be the best they can be, but more worrisome is that the government of the day plays politics with the education system.

‎”Nigeria prides herself as the giant of Africa, but finds it difficult to resolve issues that are beneficial to the populace, we want the strike called off soonest.”

Emmanuel Onuoha, another student, accused the federal government of failing the Nigerian student. ‎

He said that government needed to do everything within its power to address the challenges in the sector as he called for the strike to be called of soonest.

PAY ATTENTION: Install our latest app for Android, read best news on Nigeria’s #1 news app

Onuoha said: “Our parents said in their time the education system was good, there was nothing like strike and education was basically free.

“Now some of them are in government and they are allowing us to suffer what they never did, because they can afford to send their children to schools abroad to get the best. We are pleading with government to solve this problem so we can go back to school.

Our ‎mates in private universities are way ahead of us; we‎ are just sitting at home doing nothing. It is not fair."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) vowed to continue its ongoing industrial action if the federal government failed to meet its demands.

In a statement on Sunday, November 25, the national president of ASUU, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, said the union’s struggle was still alive and that the strike would continue.

The 27-year-old said: “We’re thinking about finishing in the top four, not to be the champions.

"We know City are not much better than Chelsea but they are better at the moment.

“In what areas are City better? A lot. Possession. When they have chances, they score.

"Maybe defensively they are better. They have top players.

“Their consistency as well, winning game after game. They are in a good momentum since last year and we need to be back like this.”

Sarri had earlier claimed he does not intend making new signings in the January transfer window in a bid to catch up with City and would work with the players at his disposal.

Alvaro Morata's long term future at Stamford Bridge is still in doubt as the Blues could fancy their chances in a £70million summer deal for Borussia Dortmund star Christian Pulisic.

On the other hand, Andreas Christensen is unhappy with lack of playing time under Sarri, with Bayern Munich and AC Milan monitoring his situation.

According to Dailymail, the bride won Miss Moscow in 2015 and has worked very hard as a model in China and Thailand. The groom’s full name is Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra but mostly referred to as your majesty.

Metele attack: PDP, Atiku dancing on the graves of patriotic soldiers - APC

- The Melete attack on Nigerian soldiers by insurgents is still generating reactions across the country

- Nigeria's main opposition party, the PDP, and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar blamed the federal government for the attack

- The ruling APC has accused the opposition of mocking the dead soldiers with their statements

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to allegations by the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that military funds have been diverted to finance the 2019 election campaigns of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The APC says the stance of the PDP, “is a sad reminder of the evil and retrogressive practices the PDP was notorious for during its defunct rule.”

The presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, had also said the soldiers were killed on the day the nation’s service chiefs were attending the inauguration of President Buhari’s re-election campaign.

PAY ATTENTION: Read the news on Nigeria’s #1 new app

“God forbid that the APC inherits and apply such morbid practice as brazenly displayed during the immediate-past PDP administration where funds allocated to fight the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast were shared among PDP leaders and their cronies,” the APC said in a statement sent to Legit.ng on Tuesday, November 27, by its spokesman, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.

Issa-Onilu said:“It is clear that the PDP and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar have decided to dance on the graves of our valiant and patriotic soldiers by politicising their deaths in the recent Boko Haram attack on the Nigerian Army Metele base.”

The APC further accused the PDP and Atiku of, “playing desperate politics where even the blood of our fallen heroes is fair game.”

“Their actions are callous and insensitive to the families and dependants of the late soldiers and indeed our military which battles daily to ensure our territorial integrity.

“Nigerians see through PDP’s ploy to score political points as elections approach and it will surely backfire,” the ruling party said.

The APC urged Nigerian soldiers on the front-line, “to remain focused on the brave task of securing the nation,” assuring them that the Buhari-led APC administration is committed to bringing lasting peace and security to all parts of the country.

The PDP had earlier asked the National Assembly to immediately commence an extensive investigation into alleged compromises that led to the killing of over 100 Nigerian soldiers by insurgents.

The main opposition party made the demand in a statement sent to Legit.ng on Monday, November 26, by its national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan.

The PDP also chided the federal government for its silence, accusing the presidency of refusing to come forth with explanations on the issue.

In the current campaign, Billing has been on top of his game and has claimed 13 games for the club this term.

One of my assistants leaving in England saw him (Billing) and spoke with him,” Rohr was quoted as saying to CSN in Lagos on Monday.

“There was a good contact but also we feel we have to be very cautious because the English Federation does not want to lose these players, we have to understand that also.

“The players have been formed and their academy work was done there (England) – the entire job done there. Now when the player is adult he says goodbye – I go with Nigeria. Not all those cases are pleasant. We have lots of cases like that in France with lots of Algerian players.”

Interestingly, since the Franco-German assumed Nigeria coach in 2016, three players that include Ola Aina, Tyronne Ebuehi and Bryan Idowu have their allegiance to Nigeria.

But Rohr insists the incoming players must show the motivation to play for the three-time African champions.

“Lots of players l grew up in France and then they go to Algeria. It’s not easy to accept that.”

“But they must really be motivated and excited to come with us. We will not push.”

“We can find players in the midfield, attack and in defence as well,” he summed up.

The dream of every woman wishing to be married someday is to get the right man, the perfect one. But there is also one little detail that requires perfection: the ring. Hence, just as soon as a lady finds the right guy to be by her side forever, she prays and hopes that this man finds the perfect ring to compliment her with when he eventually proposes.

Well, a man identified as Dennis Brown decided that he needn't stress about finding his bae a perfect ring. Rather, he decided to let her 'worry' about what was perfect for her.

In what has been regarded as a perfect engagement, Dennis Brown engaged his girlfriend in an unusual fashion. He knelt before her, popped the question but rather than slid out a ring and slip into her hands, Dennis brought out what looked like a chocolate box.

Within the box were six beautiful rings from which the lady was given a choice to pick from. The said lady named @ataradallas on Instagram was flushed beyond words.

This claim was, however, countered by others who asserted that the man who is a model and athlete must have worked out a deal with the jewellery store which allowed him to cut his costs and fulfill his lady's dream at the same time.

- The Red Devils are currently seventh on the Premier League log as a top four finish look evasive

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has reflected on the club's current struggles in the Premier League.

The Red Devils fell a staggering 14 points behind league leaders, Manchester City and a top-four finish looks unlikely for the Old Trafford dwellers.
