- The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees says it is in the forefront to make local governments functional as the third tier of government through the constitutional reforms

- Ibrahim Khaleel, the president of NULGE, says the National Assembly is amending the constitution and has passed the baton to the state Houses of Assembly

- Khaleel notes that only nine states in the country have adopted the resolution of the National Assembly for local government autonomy

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of refusing to attend to petitions of concerned Nigerians demanding the probe of the joint account allocation committee.

Ibrahim Khaleel, the president of NULGE in the company of other speakers, made the allegation at an event to mark the 40th anniversary of NULGE in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, The Punch reports.

Khaleel said the union was in the forefront to make local governments functional as the third tier of government through constitutional reforms.

The NULGE president stated that only nine states in the country had adopted the resolution of the National Assembly for local government autonomy.

"The National Assembly is amending the constitution and has passed the baton to the state Houses of Assembly but unfortunately only 12 out of the 36 states took decisions on the bill as of this morning. Out of these 12 states, only nine states adopted the resolution of the National Assembly for local government autonomy while the remaining three rejected it,"Khaleel said.

“On the JAAC issue, it is also very unfortunate that even the fight against corruption of the current government of President Muhammadu Buhari is very funny sometimes. Letters were written to the Presidency demanding the intervention of Mr President by way of investigating diversion of money meant for the development of rural areas by state governments."

“But to our utter dismay, no response from the Federal Government and two of its most prominent anti-graft agencies, the Economics and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt and other related Offences Commission.”

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved an enhanced salary structure for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The president made the declaration after meeting with members of the Police Service Commission (PSC) on Monday, November 26, at the state house, Abuja.

President Buhari met with the board of PSC, led by the inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris.

In a series of tweets, Garba Shehu, an aide to the president on media and publicity, said Buhari assured that his administration will continue to give attention to the welfare and operational needs of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) with a view to restoring its lost primacy in the internal security framework of the country.

- Delta women have threatened to boycott 2019 general elections

- They said they would mobilise over 7,000 voters to boycott the election if the state governor fails to kick against herdsmen attacks in the state

- Florence Itule, who spoke on behalf of the women, said that many roads in the state have become impassable

The women of Uto-Ewu federated communities in Ughelli south local government area of Delta state, have vowed to stay away from the 2019 general elections except the state government kick out rampaging herdsmen causing mayhem to the inhabitants and fix the impassable link road to their localities.

Vanguard reports that the placard-carrying women, who warned that they would mobilise over 7,000 voters to hold back their votes, warned politicians to stay away from their communities and discontinue using them to score cheap political points.

Legit.ng gathered that the enraged Uto-Ewu women, who protested on the Ohoror /Bomadi road on Monday, November 26, as they did in 2017, prevented the governor from passing the Uto junction axis to inspect the Udopphori road, accused him of failing to keep to his promise to them a year ago.

"We don’t want herdsmen in our communities. They carried placards, some of which bore various inscriptions, “No road, no election”, “Okowa, do our road” and “We do not want herdsmen in our communities", the women said.

They said despite that the remains of three male villagers killed by herdsmen were still in the mortuary, the herdsmen had the impudence to return to the communities with their herd.

Speaking on behalf of the women, one of their leaders, Florence Itule, said: “We came out here, last year, when Governor Ifeanyi Okowa was passing and addressed us claiming that he is unaware of the state of the road and promised to input it in the 2019 budget.

“But information at our disposal has it that the road is not captured in the budget. Unfortunately, for us, we were privy to have a peep into the 2019 Appropriation Bill only to discover that they excluded our road project.

"They abandoned the road since 1978 it was opened up. We have also been suffering attacks from herdsmen, who with the advent of the dry season have started returning with their herd. This is coupled with the fact that we lack political representation aside councilor.”

Regarding to recent flood, she lamented that flood cut off the people and victims could not access the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs camps established by the state government for temporal succor.

They accused the committee set up by the state government of being intolerant to their plight during the ravaging flood, alleging that displaced persons from all six communities in the area only got a bag of rice from government while the flood lasted.

President General, Uto-Ewu Development Union, Pastor Edewor Egedegbe and councilor representing the area, Andrew Arhiavwarien, pacified the women after some hours and entreated them to lift the siege and arrangements made to evacuate them back to their respective communities.

Addressing the women, Egedegbe and Arhiavwarien noted that the community lacks government presence since 1999, saying they have continued to suffer neglect from the government, especially during the raining seasons added to the nauseating activities of herdsmen in the area.

Legit.ng gathered that the governor, who spoke through his spokesman, Emmanuel Uzor, noted that he was in touch with the celebrant, and further commended the presidential candidate for the conferment of the title.

Umahi, who is the southeast presidential coordinator of Atiku’s campaign, added that there was no hidden intention by his absence as he has continued to stress that the welfare of the people of the southeast region is beyond any personal interest.

According to Uzor, “The governor attended an event of the people of southeast zone in Lagos, and he has placed premium on the welfare of Ndigbo. Whether there was invitation for him or not, he was in touch with Atiku and was very happy over the conferment of the title.

“The Atiku’s event was personal and the governor considered it more vital to attend a function of the southeast zone, and there’s nothing attached to it. Let me also inform you that Atiku’s running mate, Peter Obi, was in Lagos for the same event. Obi was not in Adamawa state for the conferment. So, there’s nothing more to their absences.”

Umahi, however, commended Atiku, and urged him to maintain the virtues which have projected him to such enviable recognition.

- Armed robbers allegedly attacked the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital on Sunday night, November 25, stealing three new born babies

- The hoodlums were said to have come with with guns and machetes; and also stole cash from nurses and nursing mothers

- The hospital’s chief medical director, Prof Thomas Agan, however, denied the occurrence of the incident

The paediatric unit of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital was on Sunday night, November 25, allegedly invaded by armed robbers who stole three new born babies and some cash.

According to Punch, the robbers, who were about 10 in number, also beat up the nurses on duty as well as nursing mothers and pregnant women and made away with mobile telephones, during the 10 minute operation.

READ ALSO: Police lock down Akwa Ibom Assembly again

Legit.ng gathers that the robbers easily gained entry into the maternity section and moved from bed to bed to pick up the babies. They were reportedly well armed and did not wear masks.

A nurse who was seen consoling a sobbing nursing mother, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated: “Several armed robbers gained access to this (paediatric) unit. They came with guns and machetes. They beat up my colleagues and some nursing mothers. They took away some babies and money from the patients and nursing mothers.

“The security in this hospital has been very porous. Lives of patients, nurses and doctors are at risk. There is nowhere in this hospital that is safe.

“There is so much stealing going on. Visitors are no longer controlled. People troop into the wards without any check. Many, including thieves, come in the guise of being patients’ relatives.

“Hospital properties are stolen frequently, while electricity supply is a big challenge in the hospital, because the diesel and generator parts are stolen frequently by the workers and armed robbers.”

Non-payment of salaries by the hospital’s management had reportedly led to the withdrawal of services by personnel of private security firms and regular policemen for some months now.

When contacted on Monday, November 26, however, the hospital’s chief medical director, Prof Thomas Agan, denied the occurrence of the incident.

I decided to do a thing of this nature due to what I have observed in our society today. There is a wide gap between what we had then as youths and what is obtained in our youths of today. I have once been a youth and I know what it takes. I want our youths to know that they can be whatever they wish to be in life through sheer determination, and they should not allow anything to sway them. This academy is coming to educate the youths to enable them discover their talents and harvest them. - INEC has once again been commended by the campaign organisation of Governor Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti state governor

- The deputy director general of the campaign organisation, Rufus Adunmo, said that the July 14 governorship poll was the best ever conducted by INEC

- Adunmo also said this at an election petitions tribunal that sat in Abuja on Monday, November 26, he added that the poll was free and fair

Rufus Adunmo, the deputy director general of the campaign organisation of Governor Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti state governor, on Monday, November 26, told an Abuja election petitions tribunal that the July 14, 2018, governorship poll was the best the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ever conducted.

As the 60th defence witness in the case, Adunmo insisted that the election was free, fair and credible by all standards, despite claims of bias, violence, vote-buying and other forms of malpractices that occasioned the election, Punch reports.

Fayemi was present at the Monday proceedings. Led in evidence by the governor’s lawyer, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Adunmo said before the tribunal chaired by Justice Suleiman Belgore that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission were not biased against any party as alleged.

Adunmo said he was in the situation room established by the Fayemi campaign organisation receiving reports from the field while monitoring the exercise.

He said: “It is not true that INEC favoured John Kayode Fayemi in the election. The allegation of vote-buying is also not true and, in fact, the election is one of the best conducted by INEC.”

Following cross-questioning by the petitioners’ lawyer, Chief Roland Otaru (SAN), the witness said he was not a member of the Action Peoples Party that instituted the case that sought to disqualify Fayemi from contesting the July 14 election.

The case was dismissed in the judgment of the high court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja delivered by Justice Othman Musa.

Adunmo, however, remarked that his statement was based on reports obtained from the APC agents during the election.

The PDP had filed the petition, praying the tribunal to declare them the winners of the election on the grounds that they scored the majority of the lawful votes.

On his part, Fayemi said he was certain that the tribunal would do justice to all the issues raised in the petition.

- President Donald Trump during a tweet storm proposed a new network to compete with CNN globally

- The United States president said something had to be done with how CNN portrayed the country

- According to him, a new network would not present the news in what he described as an "unfair and false way"

- Trump has repeatedly blasted CNN over its coverage of his administration

United States President Donald Trump on Monday, November 26, proposed the creation of a new, United States-funded television network to compete with CNN globally, Fox News reports.

Legit.ng gathered that Trump reiterated his claim that CNN received poor ratings domestically, but added that the network had a stronghold on the international news market.

The president said “something has to be done” with how CNN portrayed the country abroad.

He tweeted: “While CNN doesn’t do great in the United States based on ratings, outside of the U.S. they have very little competition. Throughout the world, CNN has a powerful voice portraying the United States in an unfair.... and false way.

Something has to be done, including the possibility of the United States starting our own Worldwide Network to show the World the way we really are, GREAT!”

Read the tweet below:

It was earlier reported that after the 2016 election, rumors surfaced in the past about Trump starting his own network.

The Financial Times reported Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner talked to a media executive about the possibility.

Trump’s recent comments were similar to his attack against NBC News in October 2017, when he suggested that with “all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks,” perhaps their broadcasting licenses should be challenged.

When negative stories about his administration are published or televised, the president often returns to his mantra of “fake news”.

Trump has repeatedly blasted CNN over its coverage of his administration and even called out the network’s president, Jeff Zucker.

Just before his inauguration, he labeled CNN “fake news” during a press conference over the network’s decision to report on the existence of a dossier alleging ties between Trump and Russia.

In a previous report by Legit.ng, the credential pass of CNN reporter Jim Acosta was revoked by the White House after a fiery exchange with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, November 7.

The exchange occurred as the journalist tried to challenge the president over his scare-mongering about the so-called “caravan” of migrants making their way through Mexico, UK Guardian reports.

Acosta refused to surrender a microphone provided by the White House, when Trump tried to brush him off. The journalist held on, even as a female staffer tried to take it from him. Trump went on to call the reporter “a rude, terrible person”.

Kano customs impounds cows for aiding, abetting smuggling

- Nigeria Customs Service has impounded two cows for aiding and abetting smuggling activities along Maigatari border town, in Jigawa state

- The customs area controller, Nazir Ahmed, said the arrest of the animals followed intelligence report on a new method of smuggling bags of rice through the bush paths

- Ahmed estimated that several trips of the cows equal a trailer load of rice, which represented a huge and devastating harm to the country’s economy

Kano/Jigawa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has expressed concern over a new method adopted by smugglers by using cows to smuggle contraband foreign rice into the country through porous borders.

Daily Sun reports that customs area controller, Alhaji Nazir Ahmed, made this known on Monday, November 26, during a media briefing on the activities of the area command.

Ahmed while parading the animals carrying tones of rice at the Bompai premises of the command, said the arrest of the animals followed intelligence report on a new method of smuggling bags of rice through the bush paths.

The custom’s boss said one of factors encouraging the use of cows for the illegality is the fact that cows could successfully pass through routes and paths that vehicles and motorcycles dare not pass.

According to him, “The cows also look innocent; you would think they are carrying the farm produce of one innocent farmer, not knowing they are conveying contraband from outside into Nigeria.”

He estimated that several trips of the cows equal a trailer load of rice, which represented a huge and devastating harm to the country’s economy.

The customs boss also regretted that youths of Babaura town, a border town in Jigawa state, have resorted to the ugly habit of aiding and abetting smuggling activities by use of their motorcycles to ferry in the bags of rice across the borders.

He appealed to members of the traditional institution to counsel their youths to desist from smuggling, and warned that the service will not entertain any request to drop the charge once they are arrested.

The area controller said in the last one month, they have impounded a total of 3,079 bags of rice, 770 cartons of foreign spaghetti, 17 bales of second hand clothing, 40 bags of foreign sugar and 101 jerry cans of foreign vegetable oil.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Nigeria Customs Service, Seme command in Badagry, said it destroyed expired and seized medicaments in its warehouse with a Duty Paid Value of N102.4 million.

The command’s spokesperson, Saidu Abdullahi, made the disclosure in a statement released in Lagos on Wednesday, June 20.

Abdullahi said the destruction was supervised by the director general of National Agency for Food and Dru.gs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mojisola Adeyeye and the Area Controller, Mohammed Aliyu.
