Opinion: APGA has the magic-touch to turn the southeast into a land of gold by Stella Oduah

$
0
0

Editor's note: The Senator representing Anambra north constituency, Stella Oduah, writes on joining the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

According to the Senator, APGA has what it take to produce a Nigerian president from the southeast.

The Igbo are the only group, among the three major ethnic groups, that have not produced a president since the return of democracy in 1999.

Also, they are the only ethnic group, among the major three, that have not produced a vice-president since 1999.

It appears the ethnic group has been consigned to the backwaters of politics and power. Sometimes, it comes third or even fourth in the matrix of power sharing. At present, the Igbo have no leverage or significant influence in the government.

In fact, they have never been so divorced from power before as they are now. Today, the highest position of authority occupied by an Igbo person is that of deputy senate president. This is in spite of the wealth of contributions of the ethnic group to the country.

However, despite the dwindled political fortunes, one thing is incontrovertible about the Igbo; they are the most intellectually sophisticated, economically empowered and politically conscious of all Nigerians. I do not subscribe to the false argument that the Igbo are not “politically alive”, because it fails in the face of intellectual interrogation.

READ ALSO: LIVE UPDATES: Adams Oshiomhole declared new APC chairman

The Igbo do not see politics as just an event; they see it as means to protect their economic interest, their land and their future.

The Igbo have no time for frivolous politics; they are not interested in any politics that does not guarantee the safety of their business, communities and lives. Also, the argument that the Igbo are not politically aware fails when it is interrogated in the crucible of history.

The Igbo ran a republican system of government, where the highest form of politicking took place, before the incursion of the British.

I have always said that despite my global orientation, the Igbo agenda and that of my core constituency will remain the centrepiece of my politics. As a senator my obligation is to my constituency, my state and Igbo-land.

READ ALSO: 11 other officials elected unopposed like Adams Oshiomhole (list)

What then can the Igbo do to reaffirm their place in Nigerian politics and rise to the leadership of the country? The late revered Igbo leader, Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu was prescient; he saw today, and he provided an answer.

He believed the Igbo would have political leverage in Nigeria if they identified with a political party - the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) - embraced it as their own and promoted it. Ojukwu’s wisdom is the solution to the present Igbo displacement in Nigerian politics.

I joined APGA because I believe that the party is the conscience of the Igbo, and it is the veritable platform on which the ethnic group can rise to the leadership of the country.

We must build APGA to become a force that is indispensable in the political equation of Nigeria. We must consolidate the party so that it can speak as the voice of the Igbo and also shake hands with other parties, and most importantly be at the table with the party in power to negotiate for the ethnic group.

This will remove the perception of the invisibility of the Igbo from national issues, and also discourage disparities. It will also bring renaissance to the formidable southeast politics in Nigeria.

I still believe APGA has the magic-touch to turn the south-east into a land of gold.

APGA bu nke anyi!

According to Premium Times, Kwankwaso who is a serving senator held a closed door meeting with Atiku who was also a member of the APC before he decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to intensify his presidential pursuit.

There has been speculation that the Kwankwaso is also plotting a move to leave the APC as he is facing tight opposition from current Kano governor, Umaru Ganduje.

Sources claimed Kwankwaso’s visit was only to pay homage to Atiku for the Eid Il Fitr celebration as he was not in the country during that period.

The sources added that it would be clearer in the future if the meeting was related to the senator’s political future.

A source said: “They only touched on the future of Nigeria as a nation, but not necessarily their individual futures.”

Paul Ibe who is the spokesperson of the former vice president also confirmed the meeting between the duo but said there was no reason to raise any speculation as their meeting lasted for less than an hour.

Meanwhile, former chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) John Odigie-Oyegun wished his successor Adams Oshiomhole good luck as the new national leader of the party.

- Senator Abaribe's lawyer said he was arrested by DSS for allegedly supporting IPOB

- The lawyer claimed 27 items were taken from his house

- He described his arrest as shocking

Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume has said that the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for allegedly aiding a proscribed group, the Indigenous Peoples Of Biafra (IPOB) and gunrunning.

The Nation reports that the lawyer said the DSS procured a warrant that allowed it to search Abaribe’s house and to “focus and search for arms and ammunition and any other incriminating document, while the alleged crime was aiding and supporting a proscribed body, i.e. IPOB.”

The senator representing Abia South was arrested by DSS operatives before his house was searched on Friday, June 22 and according to his lawyer, 27 items were taken away.

He said “but unfortunately, two of the 27 items include the two handsets of two USA citizens found in the house.

“One of the laptops taken included that of an educationist containing examination questions slated to be set for students on the 25th of June 2018.

“All pleas for these questions to be copied were refused.”

“Senator Abaribe, the surety to Nnamadi Kanu, is to appear in court on 26th June 2018, but on 22nd June 2018, Senator Abaribe was arrested and detained incommunicado.

“Yesterday (Friday) in the forenoon hours, our Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe, a high ranking senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, was arrested by officers of state security services.

“The articulate senator who has contributed a lot to our nation building effort is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“His arrest was as shocking as it was curious.

“As his counsel, I have, long ago, complied with DSS stipulation for meeting with its detainees.

“I have also requested for a meeting with the D.G of the service to know the reason for his arrest.

“All fell into refusal ears. At about 4:45pm, I was alerted that officers of the services were heading to the senator’s residence.

“I had to break my long wait at the DSS Headquarters and rushed to the senator’s residence.

He said: “this man is a known strong voice of the Igbo nation; hence this is a clamp down on the region.”

PDP planned a lifetime of greed but we moved to reform the economy - Tinubu

https://naija.ng/1174750-june-12-tinubu-pledges-support-buharis-second-term-bid.html- Chief Bola Tinubu accused the PDP of plotting to loot the economy for 50 years

- He said the APC came to correct their anomalies

- The APC chieftain said many people though the formation of the party would not last

The national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief Bola Tinubu has reportedly accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of plotting to loot the country’s treasury for 60 years.

The Punch reports that the former Lagos state governor’s allegation was contained in a goodwill message released on Saturday, June 23 after the party’s convention.

READ ALSO: 2019: Kwankwaso snubs APC convention, meets Atiku behind closed doors

Tinubu said many people were against the formation of the APC and did all they could to stop the merger.

He alleged that the doubters forged different tactics to prevent the APC’s formation.

He said: “The doubters who gave APC no chance of existence or of continued survival have gotten their reply in full. Their envious prayers and complaints have been answered in reverse.

“They wanted to see the end of us and our pursuit of good governance for Nigeria. You should not forget, as I shall never forget, the strong efforts they made to stop us in the courts.

“There were twelve cases brought trying to stop us from merging, from registering the new party, then attempting to bar our candidate from the election.

“Lacking the courage to face the democratic will of the people, they tried to misuse the courts as a weapon against democracy.

“We thank the judiciary for following the letter and spirit of the constitution by dismissing this dirty dozen of malicious cases filed against us.

“With their schemes foiled, those who tried to destroy us must bear witness to the destruction of their edifice of corrupt governance and their dreams of unjust domination of our nation.

“While they planned a lifetime of greedy enrichment by looting the people’s resources and the public treasury for 60 years, we moved to reform the economy to bring development and aid to the poor. ”

“When they hoisted the standard of bias, we raised the flag of justice and the chevron of fairness.”

Meanwhile, Tinubu pledged his support for President Muhammadu Buhari's second term bid, saying that the president deserved a second term in office.

Former Barcelona player Javier Mascherano was alleged to have led the move to sack Sampaoli, with the midfielder asking for a change in the managerial role as part of a “pact for life” before Nigeria’s showdown.

The Albiceleste squad members demanded the Argentina’s 1986 World Cup winning star Jorge Barruchaga, should take over from Sampaoli from his former role general manager of the national team.

Reacting on the revolt to topple Sampaoli, Burrachaga’s 1986 team-mates, Ricardo Giusti, a close pal of the general manager, revealed that the mood in the Albiceleste camp was brutal.

"The players want to build the team.

“They told Sampaoli and Tapia that they are going to pick the side. Sampaoli can sit on the bench if he wants, but it won’t matter. It will be nothing to do with him,” Giusti was quoted as saying.

Interestingly, the under-fire manager has adopted different tactics in the two previous fixtures at the ongoing 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.

The former Chile boss moved from a defensive quartet during the Iceland contest to three in the 3-0 pumping by Croatia, leaving the squad members convinced that the manager does not understand his team while strategizing for matches.

The report further revealed that the duo of Mascherano and striker Cristian Pavon almost exchanged blows in the dressing room, moments after the embarrassing defeat by Croatia after the former blasted shot-stopper Willy Caballero for his error.

Sadly, after making the plea to the FA eggheads, Sampaoli was allowed to continue as the Albiceleste manager after a confidential talk with FA boss, Claudio Tapia, ahead of the cracker with Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously had reported that Argentina legend Diego Maradona cried for Argentina after the South American nation were walloped 3-0 by Croatia at the ongoing 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.

According to the UK Telegraph, it was a nightmare for the former Argentina captain and 1986 World Cup winner, who excelled as a player, but could not hold back the tears after the Albiceleste were taught some football lessons by their European opponents.

"If u see this man, help me thank him. Tell him Laura said thank u.

Let me tell u a not so short story. A few years ago, when I was 15 years old, still in secondary school, I was obsessed with Eedris Ahdulkarim, you know the kind of obsession that u talk about him 24/7 yup that was me, everybody in class called me Eedris, so one day I couldn't take it anymore, I asked Linda to help me beg Emmanuel Ugolee @Emmaugolee who was the god of entertainment tv then to introduce me to him, so Linda got Eedris' number from Emmanuel and we called Eedris. I wanted to dye!! After speaking with Eedris on the phone arhhhhaarrhhhhhh it was the best day ever! I told everybody in class that I was close to Eedris, so as an obsessed fan, I'd go to the call centre and call him every time and he was polite enough to pick. I finished secondary school and Begged to meet him which he agreed, so my sister Vera and I visited him and that was how Eedris and I became close. Now listen to the real story.

I was young, only 16, naive, new to entertainment, obsessed etc but not for 1 day did Eedris ever ever take advantage of my obsession or naivity. And he made sure that nobody from his crew took advantage of this smallie. He warned them all not to funk with me or they 're in trouble.

Eedris took me as a daughter, he mentored me and thought me how to rap. I walked, talked and rapped like Eedris hahahhaa. And when I started mixing with other celebrities, they all wanted to take advantage , they all wanted one thing, well, as per young girl wey just enter industry na, that one na sweet fish. Alot of all the celebrities I came across wanted to take advantage but not Eedris.

This man Eedris, is the reason I can beat my chest and say I never messed with any entertainer during and after my rapping days. He's one of the reasons I'm a very decent woman till date.

The End!"

Laura Ikeji tied the knot with Ogbonna Kanu in January, 2017. They couple had their first child in July, 2017,in the United States.

The minister, who never hides his intention to contest for the governorship seat in the state on the APC platform come 2019, has been having a running battle with governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state over who controls the party’s structure in the state.

Ajimobi was reported to have said that he would not support Shittu in his bid to succeed him as governor of the state.

Against the backdrop, the recently-concluded elections to elect party’s executives in the state witnessed parallel congresses.

The minister, who said his camp was already in court to seek a redress regarding the state congress election, said he was sure that justice would be done.

‘’We are already in court. So to that extent, we will have to await the final outcome. There has been disagreement as to the congresses which we held.

‘’You remember there were parallel congresses. Parallel congresses because those who never bought forms for ward congress eventually are the ones who have been sworn in as the state’s executives of the party.

‘’Obviously that is injustice by the party. So we, loyal members, who have made effort to build this party, we have taken this disagreement to court and we believe that justice will be done at the end of the day.”

He, however, assured that despite the development in the state, his loyalty to President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC was still hundred per cent.

‘’If my loyalty is not 100%, I won’t be here. Nobody forced me to be here. My loyalty is to the president and to the party.

‘’Those who are creating problems for us in Oyo state are not the founders of the party. They are not the reason why we are in APC.

‘’We are in APC as foundation members and by the grace of God, my loyalty is 100% to the party because I believe, at the end of the day, what the temporary executives of the party have not been able to do, the court will do it for us.”

Shittu, who described the party’s convention as a success, commended the security agencies for what he called ‘’a wonderful job.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that Shittu and thirty five other aggrieved members of the APC in the state asked the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to declare null and void the congress that led to the emergence of Chief Akin Oke as the state party chairman.

Shittu in a statement signed by the director, media and strategy of his campaign organisation, Saheed Oladele, said that a letter had been written to the party's national chairman, John Oyegun, urging him not to allow the state executives led by Oke to participate in the national convention holding on Saturday, June 23.

He said the late Abiola had come with the claim that his company was owed N45 billion for contracts just after General Murtala Muhammed had died.

"When (General) Murtala (Muhammed) died, Abiola came in with a claim that he was owed, I think, about N45 billion for contracts executed by International Telephone and Telecommunication for the Ministry of Communications.

The military high command at that time said no. He went round the Emirs in the North to lobby and the emirs asked that they (military) should please pay the money.

They (military) said they cancelled the June 12 elections because if they made him President, he would take his money and the country will become bankrupt," Lamido said.

"Those who were close to Abacha should know this, because Abacha was then one of the big shots; they were all aware. There was this Bosnian war going on in Yugoslavia. I said sir; the Nigerian people are very innocent. This is like the case of a Bosnian woman rapped by a Christian Serb who got pregnant.

Yes, it is true that the pregnancy is a product of raape but this is also my flesh and blood, I cannot kill it. This (election) is my baby, my flesh and blood, I will not kill it. I said so.

We went through a process and expenditure, the campaign, the election day and even the entire government machinery was involved in the election which we won and you are now coming with the excuse that you owed some money.

That’s your problem. The baby is my baby. Yes, it is a product of raape but I can’t kill it. At that time, the Nigerian mood had been worked to go against June 12," Lamido added.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that a daughter of the self-acclaimed president of the June 12, 1993 election, had apologised to President Muhammadu Buhari over incident that might have occurred within the June 1993 election and the death of her father.
