Senate confirms INEC REC nominee, ICRC director general

- Monday Udo Tom has been confirmed as Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission

- Tom's appointment was approved by the Senate at its plenary on Thursday, January 17

- The lawmakers adopted the committee’s recommendation of confirming the appointment after a voice vote

The Senate on Thursday, January 17, approved the appointment of Monday Udo Tom as Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Premium Times reports that the appointment was approved at plenary after consideration of a report by the Senate committee on INEC.

Suleiman Nazif, the chairman of the committee, despite the fact that the committee had received a petition against the nominee, none of the petitioners showed up when invited and there was no evidence to back up claims in the petition.

The lawmakers adopted the committee’s recommendation of confirming the appointment after a voice vote.

Also, the Senate confirmed the appointment of Chidi Izuwah as director general of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC).

The chairman of the Senate committee on works, Kabiru Gaya, said the three senators from Abia, the nominee’s state, endorsed his nomination.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Senate on Wednesday, November 28, confirmed the appointment of Olanipekun Olukoyede as secretary of the EFCC, less than 24-hour after the confirmation was suspended.

The confirmation was suspended on Tuesday, November 27, after a member of the Senate committee on anti-corruption and financial crimes, Isa Misau, accused the committee of preparing a report without the consent of others.

Misau complained that the endorsement page report was signed by only three out of eight members of the committee.

In a related development, the chairman of Senate committee on anti-corruption, Senator Chukwuka Utazi, said the EFCC Act will be amended to ensure better operations.

Utazi stated this during the committee's oversight function to the commission at its new headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.

The chairman also commended the efforts of the anti-graft agency in the fight against corruption.
