An old woman has been forced to live next to her son's grave for the last nine months after she was unable to bury him due to an accrued hospital bill.
Veronica Nduku Ngwambu was unable to clear the medical bill for her deceased son and has resorted to camping next to her son's empty grave after Kenyatta National Hospital detained the body.
Every time Nduku wakes up in the morning at Makutano Ma Ndalani in Machakos county, she prays each passing ray would come with hope of burying her son.
But that is not the case for the 80-year-old whose morning is met by a mound of soil around a weather-beaten empty grave indicating many months of anguish and torment of wanting to give her son a decent send off.

Nduku's son passed on in October 2017, at KNH and a grave was prepared for the burial that never was. It was gathered that as at the time of his death, the hospital bill stood at KSh 54,000 (N192,459).
But there are indications the Kenyan online community is willing to put a smile on the octogenarian's face by offsetting the bills, which has reportedly accrued significantly since 2017.

Ex-Machakos county gubernatorial candidate Wavinya Ndeti said she would engage the KNH management on the issue.
"My office is in the process of engaging the management of Kenyatta National Hospital to sort out the hospital bill that has been accruing since last year. I challenge the local leadership to join hands with us to bring relief to this old lady," she posted.
