Former vice president Atiku welcomed by large PDP crowd in Yola

- Atiku Abubakar has been welcomed by an excited crowd of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) supporters in Yola

- The former vice president is believed to be considering the PDP to pursue his thinly-veiled presidential ambition

- The Adamawa chairman of PDP, said the party hopes Atiku would formally declare for PDP

A huge and excited crowd of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) supporters has welcomed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as he arrived in Yola, Adamawa state Premium Times reports.

NAIJ.com gathered that the former vice president who has not disclosed the party he would pursue his thinly-veiled presidential ambition is believed to be considering the PDP, his former party.

Atiku who arrived the Yola International Airport, was welcomed by PDP supporters led by the state and local government executives

He later went to pay condolence to the family of one of his close friends, late Adamu Yaro before retiring to his residence.

Tahir Shehu, the Adamawa chairman of PDP, said the party was happy with the development and hoped Atiku would formally declare for PDP.

He said: “He is one of the founders of the party and we have been looking for him to return to the party; we have been discussing with him for month before this development.”

“PDP is now a better party at all levels and we are looking forward to his joining us formally to further strengthen the party to take over at all levels.

“He (Atiku) just arrived and we accompanied him on a condolence visit to one of his associates’ house, we will allow him to rest before we meet him again for further discussion and persuasion to join us.”

The state organising secretary of APC in Adamawa, Ahmed Lawan, reacting to the development, said the party ”was not disturbed” by Atiku’s action, saying that it would not affect the party’s popularity in Adamawa.

Earlier, NAIJ.com reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated that it would not give an automatic ticket to the former vice president Atiku Abubakar, to contest for the 2019 presidential election, Punch reports.

The opposition party’s spokesman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, made the comments while reacting to the news of the former VP’s defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
