A 27-year-old gay man has taken to social media to reveal how he resisted homophobias in Nigeria. Identified as Felix Kalu, he opened up on his relationship with another man.

On Tuesday, July 3, Kalu took to his Facebook profile to share a story of how a young man loved him so much and even worshipped him at times. He added that, the gay man revealed secrets of how his family thought he was the one behind his family problems because of his gay status.

Kalu further disclosed that he hopes to marry the young man someday but in order to keep himself from other gay men, he decided to start paying fees of some of them including those who are older than him.

His post reads: “How I resist homophobia. I am 27 years old. I am young and powerful. Every war comes after a threat. The day my society threatened me they asked for a war. I will fight them to their knees. The more they resist me, the more I will persist. I currently have someone in my life that makes me feel like a treasure. This person loves me very much. This person worships me. This person can melt mountains for me. We hope to get married someday. Everyone should be given the opportunity to feel the way I feel right now. A gay boy told me that his family thinks he is the one behind all the problems they are encountering. I have heard many of such stories where a family discovers a member was gay and concludes that God was punishing the entire family because of his homosexuality. In this boy’s case he was not just put out of the house, but all his clothes were burned. At that point can you imagine what life meant for him? That boy lived with me till he learned a skill and my last kobo was used to open a shop for him. I believe the only way we young people can protect ourselves is when we are empowered. Sometimes I have had to take them and keep them in my house. A boy came to me with full blown AIDS and left as a barber who owned a barbing salon and an undergraduate of the Open University. I feel proud of myself. I said I am not going to have any biological child because of this. There was one day I left the house early in the morning to give my last N3,000 to a boy that was going for this dancing competition, his family did not support him because he danced like a girl. After I gave him that money I came back to the house to one pack of Indomie noodle that I hoped to eat that morning, I didn’t know there was no gas, I chewed the Indomie like that with water, but when he won that competition I felt a satisfaction that no food can give. I didn't buy new clothes for 3 years because I had boys going to school, boys who called me father even though some of them were older than me. This is how I resist - Felix kalu.

Region meaning

This is extensive area, corresponding to several regions of the country or several countries. It’s also combined by economic-geographical, political and other features. One more definition of region explains that a region is a term used to denote a land or water site that can be separated from another one. Actually, a region, like a country is a multi-valued term.

After gaining independence in 1960, Nigeria consisted of three regions formed according to the ethno-religious principle: Northern (the center is Kaduna, the main population is Hausa), the Western (center is Ibadan, the main population is Yoruba) and Eastern (center - Enugu, the main peoples - Igbo, Edo (Bini) and Ibibio). In 1963, from the two provinces of the Western region, the Midwest region was formed. Today, Nigeria other territory division are called geopolitical zones:

  • Middle Belt
  • North East
  • North West
  • South East
  • South South
  • And also South West

What is a province?

Let’s consider the next definition – province. Actually, province is an obsolete phenomenon in Nigeria. These were the territories that became the result of administrative division in Colonial Nigeria. During all this time, they were even divided into other separate parts. In former times, there were even such definitions as Southern and Northern provinces. The first provinces began to appear when British ruled the area from the Royal Niger Company. It was in the beginning in the 1900’s. Initially, they created 11 provinces: Illorin, Upper Bema, Bauchi, Sokoto, Zaria, Bornu, Kontagora, Bida, Kabba, Muri, Lower Benue or Nassarawa.

What is a state?

However, today Nigerians use state meaning to administratively divide their territories. Later, the provinces were cancealed and substituted with 12 states under the direct supervision of the federal government. Only the former Midwest region avoided division. In 1976, nine more states were created. Two states were created in, nine states in 1991 and 6 states in 1996.

Today there are 36 states in Nigeria and one federal capital territory Abuja.

Thus, Nigerian territory has the following scheme: there are some geopolitical zones (that is former regions). They, in turn, include Nigerian states in which there are Nigerian cities. Province meaning refers to the past of the country. This suggests that Nigeria has experienced many geopolitical changes.

- The National Committee of Yoruba Youth has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to disregard calls for him to sack his service chiefs

- The group said some individuals are out to politicise the killings going on in some northern parts of the country

The National Committee of Yoruba Youth has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to disregard calls for the sack of the nation’s Service Chiefs over increasing violence in Plateau, Benue and some other parts of the country.

The group said some people are trying to politicise the killings going on in the northern parts of the country.

The group's president, Comrade Odeyemi Oladimeji, said: “People who are supposed to work with government and the affected communities, as stakeholders, have resorted into making political gains, out of these unfortunate incidences that have led to the loss of lives on many Nigerians and properties.

"We see this call as a serious attempt at demoralizing the nation’s armed forces, who are currently engaged in tackling series of insurgencies and internal security challenges, many of which are politically motivated, by some self-serving politicians and their sympathisers.

“We are really dismayed, over the inability of these persons, who are desperate about making political gains through the present situation, and are spearheading the call for the sack of the service chiefs, to acknowledge the efforts and landmark achievements, that have been made by the Nigerian military in the fight against insurgency, and other form of banditry across the nation, over the past few months.

“As patriotic Nigerians, we have observed the series of a well-funded and politically orchestrated falsehood and the campaign of calumny against our Military especially the Nigerian Army from some politicians and self-serving individuals. While it is an open secret that some unpatriotic politicians are behind the recruitment and arming of these various ethnic militias terrorising our various communities. We also strongly condemn the attempt to politicise our nation’s security and the patriotism and selflessness of our service chiefs and their personnel.”

The group in an interview on Monday, July 2, labeled those calling for the sack of the service chiefs as corrupt.

The secretary-general of the group, Saleh Al-Hassan, said the security agencies were doing their best to tackle the issue of proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the country.

Professor Abubakar Rasheed‎, executive cecretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), on Tuesday, July 4, said only one per cent of Nigerian population form the total enrollment of students in the 164 universities across the country.

Rasheed made this known in Abuja on the sidelines of the presentation of Provisional License to a new private university, Skyline University, Kano.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Skyline University is now the 75th private university approved by the National Executive Council. ‎

Rasheed stated that the 75 private universities in the country accounted for 5.31 per cent of the total enrollment in the universities across the country.

He described the situation as unhealthy and stressed the need for more access either by creating more universities or expanding existing ones. ‎

“‎All the 75 private universities in the country account for only 5. 31 per cent of the total enrollment in our universities and many of them are small.

“If you look at the population of 198 million which is nearly 200 million and if you bear in mind that the total enrollment in our universities today, all the 164 universities is less than 2 million.

“That is just 1.96 million students in the universities that translates roughly to one per cent of the population; one per cent of the population are in the university, I think that is not healthy.

“So, we need more access; that is why we need either more universities or we need expand existing universities. We need to create more space for more Nigerians to get quality university education.”

He, however, ‎called on government at all levels and philanthropists to institute scholarship for indigent students, who are intelligent to enable them access quality education ‎.

‎According to him, the establishment of the university was significant because it was the first private university in the Kano and the second private university in the North.

The university was already in operation in the United Arab Emirate.

‎Rasheed said the NUC would continue to support investors in university education as long as they delivered quality education, which will in turn develop the country. ‎

He said: “The future of this country rests in the strength of the university education, so we will continue to support investors in our university education.”

In his response, Kamal Puri, Proprietor, Skyline University, commended the NUC for the quality guidelines set in establishing universities in the country.

Puri stressed that the growth and development of any nation was attributed to the quality of education of the people.

He said there was the need to prepare the young generation‎ for the rapid change in technology, because they are the future leaders. ‎

“Nigeria should expect technology in education because the world is changing; cyber security, artificial intelligence and robotics are spreading in every field.

“Teaching has changed; it is life-long learning and we are the leaders in technology. Teaching is not just providing knowledge and skills, but also helping the students to face the global challenges and that will be our advantage.

“We are not here to engage in a business making venture, education will not give you that returns. But seeing quality graduates at the end performing optimally will give me happiness.

‎“The returns are the respect and happiness in your heart when you see your former students doing very well.”

He assured the NUC that the institution would follow the rules and regulations and bring the best technology and curriculum in running the school.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that the PhD certificate of Senator Foster Ogola said invalid by the National Universities Commission because the institution attended by the senator is among the illegal university which will be closed down by the commission.

Foster Ogola who is representing Bayelsa west senatorial district was alleged to have gotten his credentials from an unaccredited university in Nigeria named GMF Christian university.

The investigation revealed that the senator has no research paper or thesis online despite the fact that he got his result in 2012.

- Obaseki and Okonjo-Iweala urged Nigerians to support the effort of President Buhari to stamp out corruption from the country

- According to the Edo state governor, the fight against corruption should not be a solo effort

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state and former coordinating minister of the economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, have made a strong case for Nigerians to support the effort of President Muhammadu Buhari to stamp out corruption from the country.

NAIJ.com gathered that in separate interviews on the sideline of the just-concluded 31st Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of Government of the African Union in Mauritania, Obaseki and the former minister of finance urged Nigerians to back President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption fight for a prosperous Nigeria.

Obaseki said: “The African continent has not given up hope on us because they see in our leader someone who has the willingness to tackle this problem, which we have as a country and so I urge Nigerians to understand that it is not a personal battle.”

The Edo state governor emphasised that the fight against corruption “should not be a solo effort. It is about us, as we have one more opportunity as a country to deal with this cancer, this cankerworm that has held us down.”

Okonjo-Iwealaon her part said: “We are here at the African Union because the AU is very concerned about corruption on the African continent. Obviously, the body has asked our President to lead the fight against corruption. What that means to me is that in Nigeria we also need to strengthen our effort, work very strongly to make sure that we set an example.

“I think all of us should be involved. I want to repeat that fighting corruption is a task for every Nigerian. I believe that majority of Nigerians are honest, hardworking people who just want to get on with their lives. So we must not allow the majority to be overtaken by the minority of people. We must fight them, we must put in place the systems and these should be done by all of us."

Governor Obaseki, however, enlisted the support of the AU in the state’s industrialisation drive, in a spirited effort to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to the state.

The governor, who was part of Nigeria’s delegation to the 31st Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government AU, stressed the friendly investment climate in the state and the support structures put in place by the state government to promote and protect investments.

Our silence is being taken as foolishness - Gani Adams rallies Yorubas against herdsmen violence

$

In reaction to the rampant killings and high-profile violence all over Nigeria by herdsmen, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has said that for a long time the silence of his people has been taken or misunderstood as foolishness and that this will not be the case anymore.

Giving his voice against the rampant killings and violence throughout the nation, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, on Tuesday, July 3, said he is ready to do everything to protect the Yoruba people as his office demands.

The statement came just after the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, in Oyo objected to the proposed move by federal government to create a cattle ranch in the state, Vanguard reports.

READ ALSO: No cause for alarm, insurgency is largely over in northeast - Shettima

In a statement the group, by its chairman and acting publicity secretary in the tate, Gbola Adetunji Adam and Jare Ajayi respectively, said that since cattle ranching belongs in the realm of private business, “why then should enormous public fund be devoted to establishing and promoting something that will be beneficial to some private individuals and endanger the lives of thousands if not million others?”

The statement reads in part: “This is the time to call a spade a spade. Those clamouring for creation of grazing zones across the country should have a rethink. We in Afenifere Oyo stand by this position as experiences where cattle rearers have been given free rein in Nigeria have not been pleasant.”

Adams said that it is unfair for the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to use public funds to create cattle ranches.

He called for a southwest security summit to discuss herdsmen killings in the zone. He said that events of the last few months have indicated that Nigeria is in a critical situation.

Aare Ona Kakanfo said: “The insecurity in the land is reaching an alarming peak. Pitiably, the clear and present danger today is that the government seems helpless to curtail the situation. In some sections of the country, it is no longer ‘breaking news’ that marauders kill farmers at will.

“Because these killings are giving patriotic Nigerians the creeps, patriots are shouting themselves hoarse, telling the government to do something urgently to check the trend. While members of the comity of nations are alarmed about happenings in our country, it appears as if they are crying more than the bereaved.

“Although the government has promised to check the rampaging lunatics, Nigerians are still not convinced of a decisive clampdown on these killers. Thousands of lives have been lost to these killers, but it is strange that not even a single arrest or prosecution has been affected.

“When I was installed as the 15th Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland by His Imperial Majesty, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, on January 13, 2018, I vowed that I would do everything to project the image and protect the name of Yorubaland.

“Sadly, my zeal to protect Yorubaland and the will of millions of Yoruba to defend their fatherland is being tested with the invasion of some parts of our land by these killers.

“I find it difficult to comprehend this open insult that some killers, whose kinsmen live in our villages, towns, and cities, will invade Yorubaland at will, kidnap, assault and, in some bizarre situations, kill some of our sons and daughters.

“The borders of Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo and Kogi states are becoming too hot for indigenes as many people have been kidnapped, leading to soldiers going after these killers deep inside the forest.

“I ask, if we allow killings of innocent farmers and destruction of farmlands in any part of Yorubaland to continue, where is our determination to defend the Yoruba society, values and territory? Obviously, our silence is being misconstrued for foolishness.

“We cannot continue to expose the flanks of Yoruba societies and communities to incursions and attacks because we have enough hunters, traditionalists, farmers and ancestral security outfits to commence the maximum protection of all parts of Yorubaland.

“Therefore, I urge the government to urgently liaise with Executives in Yorubaland to convene a South-West security summit to be held in one of the state capitals. The meeting will involve, among others, traditional rulers, religious and opinion leaders, farmers, businessmen, herders and security agents in the region.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that dozens of locals were feared dead after suspected herdsmen attacked Umenger community in Guma local government area of Benue state.

NAIJ.com gathered that the attackers butchered several persons, including children and some village elders on Thursday, March 22. Among those killed in the latest attack, were one James Apav and Ataki Mageri.
