- The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to the arrest of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe

- The national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, expressed fears over the safety of the Abia state senator

- The opposition urged the DSS to immediately declare Abaribe’s whereabouts and the charges against him

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday, June 22, in Abuja decried the arrest of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe by the Directorate of Security Services (DSS).

In a statement by its national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party expressed fears over the safety of the senator, who represents Abia North Senatorial District.

It described the arrest as “gestapo-style’’, adding that it had further confirmed earlier alarm that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government has commenced total clampdown on the opposition.

The party said that the attack was particularly targeted at opponents of President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election bid.

He said: “The clampdown on Abaribe is feared to be in furtherance of the moves to intimidate and emasculate members of the National Assembly who are known for their outspokenness against constitutional violations.

“The PDP notes that the Federal Government has given no reasons for the arrest and detention of Senator Abaribe, who has been kept incommunicado without access to his lawyers and associates.’’

It noted the apprehension of Nigerians following numerous alleged plots by the federal government to frame up other lawmakers.

These, according to the party, include President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremmadu as well as Senators Dino Melaye and Shehu Sani.

The PDP urged the DSS to immediately declare Abaribe’s whereabouts as well as the charge against him.

“Moreover, the laws of our nation are clear on the process of arrest and prosecution of any citizen and not recourse to clampdown and intimidation.’’ It said.

2019 elections will be the most widely covered event in Nigeria – INEC promises Nigerians

$

0

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured that the 2019 general elections will be the most widely covered event in Nigeria.

Yakubu, who gave the assurance on Friday in Abuja at the 67th World Congress of the International Press Institute (IPI), also assured the World that INEC was committed to credible elections.

“The Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) has regularly conducted election debates involving candidates at national level.

“A number of media organisations have given similar opportunities to candidates at State level, including off-season Governorship elections on their own initiatives. This is most commendable.

“We have also been approached by a number of television stations in Nigeria requesting for partnership in setting up facilities for live coverage of our activities from the INEC Headquarters in the run-up to the 2019 general elections.

“At least one international broadcast organisation has also recently approached us with a similar proposal.

“We welcome this development and for this reason, we are refurbishing our media centre, including two editorial suites for the convenience of the media,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the INEC boss extended invitations to any international media that wish to cover the 2019 general elections, adding that commission would provide logistics.

He also assured that the elections would be different from all previous elections in many respects:

He said the elections would involve the largest number of registered voters in history with over 80 million registered voters.

Yakubu said the election would unprecedentedly field the highest number of political parties.

“There are 68 political parties at present. However, with 138 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties, the number is set to rise higher.

“The political parties will contest in elections into 1,558 National, State as well as Local Constituencies in the Federal Capital Territory.

”From the statistics of new voter registration nationwide, youths will play a far greater role in the election and processes thereof in 2019 than in previous elections.

“There is also increasing determination by marginalised groups such as women, youths and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) for greater participation than never before,” he said.

Yakubu said that INEC had been test running its plans in the off-season elections it had conducted so far and the results had been positive.

“So far, we have conducted elections into 180 constituencies, the last one about three weeks ago (Ibarapa East State Constituency in Oyo State) and the next one in three weeks (Ekiti Governorship election scheduled for 14th July 2019).

“Each of the elections we have conducted so far is a remarkable improvement on the previous one.

“The improvements are in terms of preparations and outcome, ranging from the deployment of personnel, functionality of technology and the speedy collation, transmission and declaration of results.

“There is also a remarkable reduction in pre- and post-election litigation challenging the outcome of the elections.

“Most remarkably, elections are won and lost irrespective of incumbency at State level,” he said.

Yakubu assured the Congress that the will of the Nigerian voters will continue to prevail and nothing but the votes cast by citizens would determine the outcome of elections.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the forthcoming general elections in 2019 may be contested by over 100 political parties.

The disclosure was made at an elections stakeholders' summit in Abuja on Thursday, June 21 by the chairman of the commission, Mahmood Yakubu.

The government had through the minister of interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, during a panel session at the opening of the 67th International Press Institute Congress on Thursday, June 21, blamed the governor for the festering banditry in the state.

The senator who represents Zamfara Central Senatorial District in the Senate said rather than the governor to make use of his advise, he tagged him as his enemy.

“Zamfara state is our only state we must therefore put all hands on deck to make it work.

“Like the Federal Government, I have faulted the governor's halfhearted approach to the problem of banditry that had grounded almost all activities in the state,” he said.

He said the first step to end the banditry was for the governor to show courage by bringing those around him that are accused of having a hand in the "business" to book

“While the second and most important one is taking his job serious by stopping without further delay all his regular trips to Abuja and outside the country and concentrate on providing the much needed leadership in the state,” he added.

The senator counselled the governor to stop blaming Buhari for his failures, adding that “he should discard the secondary responsibility of governor's forum chair and concentrate on his primary responsibility of providing security of lives and property of the people of the state.”

He said: “If he remains an absentee governor, there is no how he can tackle the menace of banditry in the state. It is only when he is on ground that other things can take shape for the good of the state.”

Fashola speaks on Nigeria's electricity challenges, says FG inching closer to inclusion of nuclear energy

- Nigeria is inching closer towards diversifying its energy mix with the inclusion of nuclear energy

- Minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, is leading Nigeria's strides towards the attainment of that goal

- Fashola says it is imperative for Nigeria to lay emphasis on the gains and safety of nuclear energy

As Nigeria continues to battle with epileptic power supply and other energy challenges, minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, is optimistic that Nigeria is inching closer towards diversifying its energy mix with the inclusion of nuclear energy.

Underscoring the need for Nigeria to diversify its energy mix with inclusion of nuclear energy, Fashola said it was imperative for Nigeria to lay emphasis on the gains and safety of nuclear energy as obtained in other advanced nations.

He further stressed nuclear energy would lead to sustainable development, stressing that nations have moved towards adoption of cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, which nuclear energy provides.

He, however emphasized the need for Nigerians to be properly informed about the capacity that has been developed in Nigeria’s nuclear industry; stating that focus should be on information sharing as people are scared of things they don’t understand.

The minister further assured Nigerians on the safety and benefits of nuclear energy, stressing it should be adopted for development and peaceful purposes - with a view towards attaining sustainable development goals.

In October 2017, Nigeria and Russia signed several agreements on the construction and operation of a nuclear power plant as well as a nuclear research centre housing a multi-purpose research reactor.

The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) signed the agreement on behalf of the Nigerian Government; while ROSATOM, Russia's state owned nuclear energy provider, signed on behalf of the Russian federation.

The deal was reached after long period of negotiations, with both countries signing their first intergovernmental nuclear co-operation agreement in 2009.

Faced with rapidly increasing baseload electricity demand, the federal government in 2007 approved a technical framework for a nuclear power programme seeking the support of the IAEA to develop plans for up to 4000 Mega Watts of nuclear capacity by 2025.

This eventually paved the way for signing of Nigeria's first intergovernmental cooperation agreement on nuclear with Russia in 2009.

Subsequently, agreements on the design, construction, operation and decommissioning of an initial nuclear power plant was made.

Two sites, at Geregu in Kogi state and Itu in Akwa Ibom state, were confirmed in 2015 as preferred sites for Nigeria's first nuclear power plants after evaluation by the NAEC.

According to World Bank figures, with approximately 80 million people lacking access to grid electricity, Nigeria has the largest access deficit in Sub-Saharan Africa and the second largest in the world, after India. The national electrification rate is 55 percent, and the rural electrification rate is only 39 percent. Nigeria hopes the proposed nuclear power plants will help deal with the country's energy deficit.

- The national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun has inaugurated the party’s Kano and Jigawa state chairmen

- Oyegun charged the newly-inaugurated state chairmen to work for the re-election of their respective state governors and President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019

- The APC national chairman while handing over copies the party’s constitution and manifesto to the Kano and Jigawa state chairmen charged them to be lawful

In one of his last assignments as national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun on Friday evening, June 22, inaugurated the party’s Kano and Jigawa state chairmen, Abdullahi Abass and Hon. Ado Sani Kiri.

The APC national chairman charged the newly-inaugurated State Chairmen to work for the re-election of their respective state governors and President Muhammadu Buhari in the forthcoming 2019 elections to consolidate on the good work the President has started.

Odigie-Oyegun who was accompanied by the APC National Organising Secretary, Sen. Osita Izunaso performed the inauguration at the Party’ National Secretariat.

In attendance were the Kano state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje; Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Doguwa; Hon. Abdulmumini Jibrin and a horde of party supporters.

While handing over copies the party’s constitution and manifesto to the Kano and Jigawa state chairmen, Odigie-Oyegun charged them to be lawful in their dealings in office and ensure party supremacy.

“It must be your guidelines. No one of us can be greater than that constitution.” he said.

Odigie-Oyegun added: “I want to congratulate the APC Chairmen of Kano and Jigawa states. You have in a sense made my day. This will constitute one of the last pleasant activities that I will be undertaking as Chairman of our great party, the APC.

“You are part of the grassroots leadership of this great party at a very important level. You are the work horses of the APC... We are approaching another election, four years clearly is not enough for the kind of agenda that we have in the manifesto of the party... You are going work very hard in difficult circumstances because of the state of the economy at the point we took over.

The fact that it is recovering rapidly now is something you can build on in your message to the people as we advance towards 2019. There are successes, familiarise yourself with those successes of the APC, of president Buhari."

Odigie-Oyegun cited the administration’s achievements in the railway, agriculture, infrastructure, road network and electricity generation sectors.

“We took over at under 3000 megawatts; today we have a constant 7000 megawatts. It has not solved the problem, but one thing is clear, we have a president that is working hard to improve the sector.

“It is my prayer that you will work hard to return the governors of Kano and Jigawa States and most importantly give our President another four years to consolidate the good work he has started.

It has been difficult. Enemies of the nation have been fighting back. Patrons of corruption have been fighting back, but he has been steadfast inspite of criticisms. So work to make sure there is continuity.” the APC national chairman stated.

As an aspiring musician, he had to convince his father of his passion by making frequent visits to the studio. He got lucky when Naeto C mentored and coached him at 15 to activate his fullest potential.

The seven-track album was a collaborative one with the Glorious Five, a group he and a couple of his church friends formed. With the stage name, Lil' Prinz, in 2006, Ayo gained the support of family and friends when he released the album in church.

Little did Ayo know his breakthrough was to activate eight years after. Thousands of Nigerians first came to know Wizkid after he was discovered by singer, Banky W in 2009. The single reached number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a position it kept for 10 non-consecutive weeks.

Three hundred and twenty soldiers, who have completed a six-month training at the Nigerian Armed Forces Ressetlement Centre (NAFRC), Oshodi, Lagos, in new skills, have formally retired from the service.

The soldiers, comprising 262 from the Nigerian Army, 44 from the Nigerian Navy and 14 from the Nigerian Air Force were sent off at a passing-out ceremony held at the Centre on Friday, June 22.

The ceremony was attended by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, who urged them to continue to contribute their quota towards surmounting threats to lives and property within their domiciled area.

“You will have to prove in your relationships that you have passed through a highly disciplined system such as the military.

“I believe you are all capable of succeeding and positively influencing whatever environment you find yourselves after now,” he said.

The CDS said he had no doubt that the training they have passed through at the Centre would expose them to several entrepreneurial and management skills that would help mitigate the envisaged pitfalls as well as living a stress free life in retirement.

“Let me use this opportunity to intimate you that the Defence Headquarters recently organised a workshop with the aim of harmonising all armed forces veterans associations.

“Thus a Veteran Association of Nigeria has been proposed and modalities for its establishment are ongoing.

“Also, a change in name and mandate of NAFRC is being considered to better reflect the current role of the Centre in capacity development of our retiring officers, soldiers, ratings and airmen,” he said.

The CDS also said that the Defence Headquarters was making efforts towards reviewing the mandate of the Centre, noting that the needs of the mordern day retirement go beyond mere vocational training.

Earlier, the NAFRC Commandant, Air Vice Marshall Austin Jekenu, during his welcome address, urged the retired personnel to make good use of the skills acquired.

He also urged the retired personnel to be obedient to constituted authority while contributing to the progress of their community.

Jekenu urged all the retiring servicemen to positively contribute to boost national economy in whatever business they engaged in.

“The Centre graduates 2 courses annually and it is on record that we have trained over 41, 000 ex-servicemen of the Nigerian Armed Forces since its inception.

“We have enjoyed tremendous support from the National Assembly, Ministry of Defence, CDS and Service Chiefs,” he said.
