The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has claimed that the N1.5 billion imprest account of the external affairs ministry with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was actually used to fund the political campaign of Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
Channels Television reports that this allegation was made on Monday, February 4, by an investigator with the EFCC, Shuaibu Shehu, who spoke at a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.
According to Shehu, two former ministers and some other people transferred the amount to the former president.

Shehu, who is the third prosecution witness in the trial of former minister of finance, Nenadi Usman, and her aviation counterpart, Femi Fani-Kayode, as well as Danjuma Yusuf and a company, on allegations of laundering N4.6 billion, told the court presided over by Justice Rilwan Aikawa that he got involved with the case against the defendants in 2016 at a period a petition from the ministry’s account was assigned to his team to investigate.
He told the court that the investigation by the EFCC linked the former minister, Nenadi Usman, and the third defendant, Danjuma Yusuf, to the account of the company where the money was transferred to.
He further added that detailed investigations into the case showed that the funds were also moved from the account of the company to implement the 2015 campaign of former President Jonathan.
He told the court that those who benefited from the funds include Jumoke Akinjide and Achike Udenwa.
However, Shehu’s testimony could not end as he was objected to by the defendants’ counsels, who argued that the issue of how the money was disbursed was not part of the charge preferred against them.

They also argued that the witness cannot give evidence of how the funds were disbursed.
The defendants prayed the court to take out the evidence given on the issue.
Justice Aikawa, thereafter, fixed February 20 and 21, as dates to rule on the objection raised by the defence team.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that a Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday, February 4, stood down for one hour, the N6.9 billion fraud trial against Ayo Fayose, the immediate past governor of Ekiti state.
A former minister of state for defense, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, who is the fifth prosecution witness, was billed for cross examination on Monday, February 4.
