President Buhari mourns Senator Waku, showers encomium on ex-lawmaker

- President Muhammadu Buhari has mourned the passing of former senator of the Federal Republic, Joseph Kennedy Waku

- The former lawmaker died after a brief illness at the National Hospital in Abuja on Sunday, February 3

- Waku represented Benue Northwest at the Senate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party between 1999 and 2003

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the death of former senator of the Federal Republic, Joseph Kennedy Waku.

Legit.ng gathers that the disclosure was made in a statement on Monday, February 4, by the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina.

The statement read: "Commiserating with the family of the senator, who represented Benue North-West (1999-2003) and the government and people of Benue State, the President recalls Waku’s contributions to the growth of education when he served as Pro-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Akure.

"President Buhari urges the children, friends and political associates of the late elder statesman to keep alive his commitment to the unity, peace and stability of not only Benue State, but also the entire country.

"The President prays Almighty God to comfort the family and all those who mourn the septuagenarian and grant his soul eternal rest."

Legit.ng previously reported that Senator Joseph Kennedy Waku died at the age of 73 on Sunday, February 3, at the National Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness.

Born on June 12, 1946, Senator Waku was elected senator representing Benue Northwest district at the National Assembly in 1999, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A native of Waku village in Guma local government area of Benue state, Waku was at the Senate between 1999 and 2003.

Until his death, Waku was a chieftain of the northern political group, Arewa Consultative Forum.

He was one of the vocal Benue elders who condemned the incessant killer herdsmen attacks in the state.
