Osinbajo chairs NEC meeting on new minimum wage

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday, January 17, presided over the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting attended by the governors and some ministers in charge of the economy.

In attendance at the meeting which was held at about 11:26 am at the council chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja are governors of Zamfara, Lagos, Jigawa, Ekiti, Kebbi, Bauchi, Niger, Plateau and Adamawa states.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports some deputy governors and ministers including that of Labour, Chris Ngige were also in attendance.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Nigerian governors held another meeting in Abuja on Thursday night, December 13, in continuation of their deliberation on the amount to be agreed upon as new minimum wage.

The meeting was presided over by Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state, who chairs the NGF. The newspaper states that many state governors did not show up for the meeting.

Many governors failed to reach any decision at the meeting as Yari said there was no new outcome from the meeting.

In a related development, Boss Mustapha, the secretary to the government of the federation, said the federal government was working toward early implementation of new minimum wage which has caused a lot of controversies in recent times.

Mustapha made this known in Abuja at the opening of a one-day symposium on the 25th anniversary of the national salaries, incomes and wages commission which has overcoming the challenges of compensation and productivity in Nigeria as its theme.

Represented by Olusegun Adekunle, the permanent secretary, general services office, office of the SGF, the Boss said that the present administration was committed to the welfare of Nigerian workers.
