A section of football fans have taken to social media urging Manchester United hierarchy to hire former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, after Jose Mourinho's sacking by the club after a string of poor results.

United made public Mourinho's departure on Tuesday, December 18, announcing that the club had parted ways with the Portuguese tactician.

In a statement published on United's official website, the club thanked Mourinho for his services during his stint at Old Trafford, bidding him farewell in his future.

"Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect," the statement said.

"The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future," the statement continued.

The Manchester outfit further announced a new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, as the club conducts "a thorough recruitment process" for Mourinho's replacement.

Tottenham Hotspurs manager, Mauricio Pochettino, and former Real Madrid boss, Zinedine Zidane, are understood to be in the frame to succeed Mourinho at Old Trafford.

However, while reacting to news of the former Chelsea manager's sacking, a section of fans took time to cheekily suggest that United should consider hiring the services of Wenger.

Whereas it remains unclear if United would explore that prospect, the fans contended the former Arsenal boss would make a perfect replacement.

Wenger has been out of job since leaving the Gunners at the end of last season after a 22-year reign at the Emirates.
