Two township learners from Mpumalanga, South Africa recently won the 2018 Hip2b2 3M Innovation Challenge with their brilliant invention that could be a future life-saver for firefighters.

Trevor Simelane and Joseph Mdluli in Grades nine and 10 respectively hail from the Kanyamazane Township.

The pair made Mandlesive Secondary School proud when they achieved top honours at the 2018 Hip2b2 3M Innovation Challenge.

The initiative is supported by the Department of Basic Education with the objective of encouraging learners to experiment in the fields of maths and science.

They invented a rescue robot by using recycled materials, which has the ability to navigate and endure harsh conditions, such as fire and smoke.

The Sowetan reported that the boys drew inspiration from the Bank of Lisbon fire, where two firefighters lost their lives due to smoke inhalation and another fell from a ledge.

Simelane said their creation is capable of absorbing smoke and can even provide oxygen to rescued people.

Mdluli confirmed the robot is ideal for accessing buildings which may be unsafe for humans.

Legit.ng gathered that the boys saw off hundreds of innovative designs to scoop the top prize at the Innovation Challenge.
