- Organised labour has vowed to disgrace governors owing salaries to workers in their states
- The congress said it would be working with the International Trade Union Congress (ITUC) to embarrass Nigerian governors
- NLC said the governors who owe their state workers would be stopped at the airport
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has promised to work with the International Trade Union Congress (ITUC) to embarrass Nigerian governors who owe their workers salaries.
The president of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, in Abuja on Tuesday, December 11, said the congress would place names of governors in the states where workers are being owed salaries and pensions for several months on a “watch list”.
Wabba while addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) at its 17th anniversary yesterday in Abuja aside naming and shaming the governors, the congress would soon direct Nigeria workers to monitor various airports in the county.

Daily Trust reports that Wabba implied that such monitoring efforts would stop such governors who may have completed their term from fleeing the country.
“We will instruct workers at the nation’s airports to disallow and disgrace any governors trying to leave the country in order to enjoy themselves overseas.
“We have issued statements to these governors owing salaries, informing them that they cannot go anywhere to enjoy the monies they have carted away.
“They will be disgraced and chased away,” Wabba said.
He also said that the NLC would not relent in its effort to ensure the issue of minimum pension alongside the minimum wage was addressed.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Thursday, November 22, threw its weight behind the organised labour’s quest to increase the minimum wage, saying that it would boost the economy.
The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, disclosed the apex bank’s position while briefing the press on the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, in Abuja.
Emefiele, who warned Deposit Money Banks against lending to politicians or abetting money laundering as campaigns for the 2019 general elections, expressed optimism that the proposed increase in the nation’s minimum wage would boost the economy through increased aggregate demand.
