The House of Representatives has approved that June 12 be marked as Democracy Day in Nigeria following the adoption of a report on a bill seeking to amend the Public Holidays Act 2004, The Punch reports.
Legit.ng gathered that at a plenary on Thursday, December 6, the lawmakers at the lower chamber approved the amendment in the act.
With the new development, May 29 has been deleted in the establishing act, paving way for June 12 as the new Democracy Day in Nigeria.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that President Muhammadu Buhari had announced, via his Facebook page, that June 12 would be celebrated as the new Democracy Day.

In the announcement dated Wednesday, June 6, the president also announced that the late Chief Moshood Abiola, who was adjudged the winner of the cancelled June 12, 1993, election, would be posthumously awarded the highest honour in the land, GCFR.
