The House of Representatives on Wednesday, December 5, made moves to probe the circumstances surrounding the protests by members of the parliamentary staff association of Nigeria leading to the picketing of the chambers.
The Punch reports that the lower chamber of the National Assembly wanted President Buhari to forward the new minimum wage bill, as jointly proposed to him, to the National Assembly for consideration.
Adopting a motion by Sani Zoro (APC, Jigawa state) at the plenary the lawmakers unanimously resolved to set up a joint ad hoc committee with the Senate to probe into the labour action.

Moving the motion, Zoro called for legislative intervention in the ongoing crisis between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, leading to the current strike by the union.
The lawmaker said the House was also disturbed that members of PASAN picketed the chambers to press home their grievances despite that the legislature had the responsibility to address such issues in the polity.
He prayed the House to “request president to transmit the tripartite agreement on national minimum wage to the National Assembly for legislation in order to avert the looming industrial actions by the organised labour, with the potential of paralysing the nation’s socio-economic and political activities, and its attendant costs.”

Zoro also prayed that the federal government should henceforth and in good faith, implement its agreement with ASUU to prevent incessant strikes by the university lecturers.
The speaker, Yakubu Dogara, put the motion to voice vote and it was unanimously granted by the House.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the Senate on Wednesday, December 5, passed six bills seeking the establishment of federal tertiary educational institutions in different parts of the country.
The proposed institutions are four polytechnics, one college of education and one university of technology.
The polytechnics are to be located in Mpu, Enugu state; Kwale in Delta; Kaltungo in Gombe state and Adikpo in Benue. On its part, the university known as City University of Technology would be hosted by Auchi in Edo, while the College of Education is be sited in Omuo-Ekiti in Ekiti.
