- A group in Niger Delta, 21st Century Youths of Nigeria for Restructuring, said it stopped its proposed attack on Lagos and Abuja because of stakeholders' intervention

- The group, through its president, Izon Ebi, also berated President Buhari for not signing the electoral act bill into law ahead of 2019

- The group said it would resist attempt to subject the Niger Delta region to submission through the force of federal might

A group in the Niger Delta region has said its plan to attack major infrastructures belonging to government in Lagos and Abuja was stalled courtesy of the intervention of elders in the region.

Vanguard reports that the group, 21st Century Youths of Nigeria for Restructuring, had given a seven-day ultimatum to President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the electoral act bill into law or risk major projects in Lagos being destroyed.

Legit.ng gathers that the group, reversing its decision, attributed its last result for peace to intervention by elders and stakeholders of the region.

Announcing the reason for the sudden reversal of its decision, the leaders of the group, Izon Ebi, said: "After intense pressure and meetings with our elders, leaders from the Niger Delta and various stakeholders, we have decided to instruct all our members to stand down all attacks on our critical infrastructure in Abuja and Lagos.”

The group also cautioned Nigerians against trusting the President Buhari-led government. It also questioned the presidency's commitment to free and credible election in 2019.

It said: "We want to inform our elders, leaders and all Nigerians that this government must not be trusted and treated with platitude because a reasonable government will do everything possible to sign the electoral act into law.

The signing of the electoral act into law will douse tension and fear because it will help in building confidence toward a free, fair, transparent and credible general election come 2019."

The group also vowed that the people of Niger Delta will resist attempt by the federal government to use forces to subject the region into submission.

It added: "No government or person can intimidate the Niger Delta people into submission not even this one.

“We are going to resist this ploy and well orchestrated plan to impose their stooges as our leaders in the Niger Delta and Nigeria.”
