The newspapers for Monday, December 3, focus on the NLC's demands for N30,000 minimum wage proposal, and President Buhari's dismissal of the rumour suggesting he died and had been replaced by one Jubril, a body double from Sudan, among other stories.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised concerns over what it said was the federal government’s silence on the N30,000 minimum wage proposal.

The Punch reports that Peter Ozo-Eson, the general secretary of the NLC, said the labour expected that President Muhammadu Buhari would have sent a draft bill to the National Assembly weeks after the report on the minimum wage was submitted to him.

The labour leader said Nigerian workers may take actions to press home their demands if the government fails to act fast on the issue.

“The latest about the issue of the minimum wage is clear. We expect that since the Presidency had already received our report, the President should have drafted an executive bill to the National Assembly on it so that they can begin to legislate on it,” Ozo-Eson said.

“That has not been done even though we expect that it should have been done already. We cannot continue to wait forever.

“The next step as I said is for the President to transmit a draft bill to the National Assembly. The FG’s delay on the issue is provocative, our members are becoming restless and the FG must act fast on our report.

“If the delay continues, our next step will be made public after we meet again to review the steps taken so far."

President Muhammadu Buhari has dismissed the rumour suggesting he had died and had been replaced by one Jubril, a body double from Sudan.

The Guardian reports that the president in a statement by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said the rumour was being spread by those hoping that he died during his ill health

A lot of people hoped that I died during my ill health. Some even reached out to the vice president to consider them to be his deputy because they assumed I was dead. That embarrassed him a lot and, of course, he visited me when I was in London convalescing… It’s real me; I assure you. I will soon celebrate my 76th birthday. I am still going strong,” Buhari said on Sunday, December 2, in Poland.

The Nation reports that the president also noted that security in the northeast had improved despite the recent surge in attacks in the region.

“Those in the Northeast will tell you that in spite of the recent setbacks, there is a difference between the time we came and before," Buhari stated.

‘‘We are not doing badly on security, economy and agriculture. We have virtually stopped the importation of food, especially rice and we are saving a lot of money.

‘‘We now have food security and that has come with fiscal security because a lot of young educated people have not regretted going back to the farms and earning a respectable living."

Meanwhile, Boko Haram terrorists have launched an attack which reportedly destroyed an armoured tank base of the army at Buni Gari in Gujba local government area of Yobe state.

Vanguard reports that two soldiers were killed in the attack in while several insurgents also suffered casualties from the superior fire power of the military.

A senior security officer who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said both sides suffered casualties from the latest attack on the military formation and residents of Buni Gari.

In another report, the Catholic archbishop of Abuja archdiocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has said Nigerians are faced with making a choice between two well-known but undesirable candidates in the forthcoming 2019 presidential election.

This Day reports that the cleric in a speech presented at the weekend in Abuja, said the new political parties that would have joined forces to produce a credible alternative presidential candidate failed to do so due to selfishness and ego.

“My dear brothers, our country is deeply in a great dilemma as we move towards the 2019 general elections. It would appear that we are faced with horrible tragedy of a choice between two well-known undesirable candidates.

‘’This is not only because both of them are Muslims but because we have seen both and we have no reason to be enthusiastic that they will do wonders. But this does not mean that we will completely give up interest, if we do, others are busy working. All it takes for evil to thrive is for the righteous to stay quiet and do what they call minding their own business, which means doing nothing.

“It is a pity that whereas there are over 90 political parties, there seems to be no viable alternative to the two mega parties that have failed us. Where is the alternative? It is a pity that they cannot come together to form a viable alternative.
