- A Nigerian man identified as Ideal_Josh on Twitter recently shared details of how much he was charged for a pencil

- According to him, he popped in a shop in Ikoyi to buy a pencil, only to be charged N1,500 for it

- He expressed subtle disappointment that such an item cost that much

Living in one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in Lagos comes with its own problems. While Ikoyi is lined with nice roads and malls, life there isn't so pleasant except you have a fat bank account.

Recently, A Twitter user identified as Ideal_Josh had the shock of his life when he popped into a store in Ikoyi area of Lagos to buy a pencil, only to be charged N1,500 for it. While that is easy for people who earn salary in foreign currency or are bosses of their business, it's completely outrageous for an average Nigerian to spend such an amount on a pencil.

However, since Forex is off the roof these days and most items sold in such stores are imported, it's not a complete surprise that it will cost that much. It however reflects the tough reality of many Nigerians, who are daily trying to survive in the rather harsh economy.

For Josh, he was convinced that people who reside in Ikoyi use a different kind of currency because buying a pencil for such an amount is nothing but ridiculous.

Read his post below:

Under normal circumstances, a pencil should cost at most, N50. This means the store charged over 1,000 percent extra than the regular price. Some people tried defending it saying it's because it carries the mathematical figure's table but others thought it was still bollocks.
