It was a mild reprieve for jailed former Nigerian governor, Joshua Dariye of Plateau state, as a Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, on Friday, November 16, reduced his 14-year term of imprisonment to 10.

Premium Times reports that the conviction of Dariye by a high court was right but that the former governor should have been jailed for 10 years.

On June 12, the 14-year prison term was slammed on Dariye, a serving senator, by the high court of the Federal Capital Territory, Gudu, Abuja, presided by Justice Adebukola Banjoko.

He was charged for criminal breach of trust and criminal appropriation of the state’s funds running to over N2 billion.

Joshua Dariye, a serving senator representing Plateau Central senatorial district and former governor of Plateau state, had been accused of embezzling N1.162 billion ecological funds belonging to his state.

The former governor was charged to court by the anti-graft agency, EFCC, in 2007.

Legit.ng gathered that the trial which stalled for over eight years following Dariye’s protracted attempt to prevent his prosecution continued after the Supreme Court ordered the senator to proceed with his case in 2015.
