Tight security as INEC begins distribution of electoral materials in Osun

- INEC has started the distribution of electoral materials for the Osun guber election

- Reports have it that security in the commission's HQ in Osogbo has been tightened

- INEC said it has put necessary arrangements in place to ensure a peaceful electoral process

With a few hours to the gubernatorial election in Osun state, necessary arrangements have been put in place by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) and adequate security personnel deployed to ensure peaceful conduct of the electoral process.

The Punch reports that amidst tight security, the electoral body has commenced the distribution of sensitive materials to the 30 local government areas in the state.

NAIJ.com notes that the political tension in Osogbo, the state's capital, has skyrocketed as the three leading contender in the race have started all possible political ploys to ride their ways into the hearts of the electorate.

Asked about the electoral body's effort so far, the resident electoral commissioner, Olusegun Agbaje, confirmed that all hands are on desk to ensure a violence-free election, adding that the headquarter of the commission in the state is in the safe hands of security operatives.

He said: "The election materials have all been transported to the local government areas. We started distributing them this morning and we completed it this evening.

"They have all been moved and they are all at the local government including smart card readers. They are being watched by security men and nothing can tamper with them.

“We are ready for the Saturday election and we want to assure everybody that the election will be credible and security operatives would ensure that it is violence-free as well.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun state has distributed sensitive materials to the various local government areas in the state ahead of the Saturday, September 22 election in the state.

Security personnel are also on ground to ensure safety of lives and property before, during and after the voting process on Saturday.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that not less than 16,000 INEC staff were reported to have been deployed for the conduct of Osun governorship election on September 22.

INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on YIAGA Africa Watching The Vote (WTV) Series with the theme: Ending the Scourge of Vote Buying and Selling in Nigerian Elections. Yakubu said the commission would ensure that citizens' votes count in the Osun gubernatorial election.

According to him, INEC is only interested in the the election and not in the outcome of the elections because the outcome would be in the hands of citizens.
