- Club boss Jose Mourinho insists the plastic surface is not good for Valencia's knee problems

- The 33-year-old did not make the trip to Switzerland

Antonio Valencia will play no role for Manchester United when they square up against Young Boys in Wednesday’s Champions League clash due to the nature of the pitch.

According to UK Sun report, Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho disclosed that the club captain did not travel with the squad to Switzerland as the game in Bern will not hold on a natural pitch

"We decide not to play Antonio Valencia because his knee is not a knee that needs an artificial pitch at all.

"So we brought Luke Shaw back to the squad and to the team.

"I told already Luke Shaw is playing tomorrow and apart from him we have Diogo, Ashley Young and Darmian ready to play,” noted Mourinho, who was speaking ahead of United opening tie of the UCL at the Stade de Suisse.

The 33-year-old Ecuadorian has not been a regular face for the Old Trafford dwellers in recent games in the English topflight, but Mourinho noted that Valencia, who is training at the club base was excused for the Young Boys game due to his long-standing knee issue.

"Valencia's situation, we need to protect his clinical situation, apart from that we go with everything we have and have to try and win,” the former Chelsea boss submitted.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously had reported that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has told his team they must think like Roger Federer if they are to get maximum points when they play Young Boys in the Champions League.

United will play the Switzerland based side in Wednesday Champions League cracker on a plastic pitch in Swiss capital Bern.

The Portuguese manager told his side they must learn to play on artificial turf just like eight-time tennis champion Federer does on different surfaces
