Tears roll among friends, family as Kofi Annan's body is laid in state

The son of the late United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, Kojo, has spoken on the need for Ghanaians to honour and stay true to the memory of his father by upholding the values he stood for

At the occasion that saw his father's body arrive in Ghana, Kojo Adeyemo Annan said that his father's quest humanitarian values such as peace and unity needed to be upheld by all Ghanaians home and abroad.

In his interview with 3news.com, the younger Annan said that his father will be greatly missed by his living family. Kojo is one of two children from Kofi Annan's first marriage.

Kojo Annan is reported as saying: "He was a humanitarian and he believed in unity. He will be greatly missed."

On Monday, September 10, the late Kofi Annan's body arrived at the Kotoka International Airport in the evening. NAIJ.com brought you exclusive photos regarding his arrival and the presence of a welcoming party.

His body will be laid in state on Tuesday, September 11. Friends, family and the general public are expected to make their way to the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) to pay their respects.

Earlier, NAIJ.com reported that Kofi Annan is said to have died at the age of 80 in the early hours of Saturday, August 18, in Switzerland.

Annan, who was born in Ghana in 1938, served as the seventh UN Secretary-General, from 1997 to 2006, and was the first to rise from within the ranks of the United Nations staff.

Kofi Annan died in Bern, Switzerland earlier in August. He was the first black secretary-general of the United Nations and he served a two consecutive 5-year terms from 1997 to 2006.
