The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared a three-day prayer over what it referred to as a threat to democracy across the nation. CAN said that the resolve was prompted by the “recent political drama unfolding in our nation", Punch reports.

Daramola Bade, the acting CAN general secretary, in a statement on Tuesday, August 14, directed churches nationwide to mobilise their members for the prayer from August 27 to 29 to seek God’s face over the social and political condition of the nation and for the peaceful conduct of the 2019 general polls.
CAN urged the faithful to pray against the election of evil politicians in 2019, for peaceful co-existence and an end to mindless killings throughout the country.
The statement partly read: “Following the recent political drama unfolding in our nation that is becoming really embarrassing and constituting big threats to our nascent democracy, the leadership of the CAN has called for three-day prayers to be observed in all churches in Nigeria for divine protection for our nation and democracy.”

“In view of the above, we request all bloc Chairmen, Zonal Chairmen, States’ Chairmen, local and all church leaders to mobilise our members nationwide for three days of prayer from August 27 to 29 to seek the face of God concerning the social and political state of our nation and for peaceful conduct of 2019 election.”
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that former chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, had urged the federal government to proffer stiffer laws against declaration of fake election results.
Jega made the call on Wednesday, August 8, in Abuja at an international conference with Democracy and Disinformation: How Fake News Threatens our Freedom and Democracy in Nigeria, as theme.
