A openly gay Nigerian man based in the US has come out to reveal how many people pretend to be what they are not just to please the society.
Identified as Kenny Brandmuse, he made his sexuality and HIV status known to the public in 2015, relocated to the US and has been a strong advocate for the LGBT community ever since. In a series of his Facebook posts, he never fails to attack Nigeria's stand on gay people using his own story as an example.
In a recent post which he shared on the platform, he revealed how being 'in the closet' almost pushed him towards contemplating taking his own life. According to his post, there were times when he wanted to walk away from his marriage so as to end his misery. Using this story, he related it to how others pretend to be happy for the sake of society.
He wrote: "Those days during my work trips, I’d go to this bridge in Cape Town and plan on jumping into the sea to end my life of misery and pain. I wanted to simply call her and say “baby gurl, this ain’t working. This husband and wife thing. This pretend-and-look-good for our church folks and families. This thing!” Still, I’d rather hurt myself than hurt her. I looked around me in the mall and saw couples holding hands.

I saw them young and old. I wanted to stop them and ask: are you happy? Or are you like me, acting for the camera? Perhaps that’s how it was meant to be. Perhaps not. I know a little better now. At least, un-photoshopped pictures don’t lie. If you are living someone else’s life, you can never be happy. #HappinessIsLivingYourTruth irrespective of what people think. #Live"
