Senate to probe minister of state for petroleum resources over oil and gas lease renewal

- The Senate is set to look into the renewal of oil and gas lease by Ibe Kachikwu

- Senator Alasoadura raised a motion to investigate Kachikwu's action on the lease renewal

The Senate on Wednesday, July 18, called for an investigation into the ongoing oil and gas lease renewal by the minister of state for petroleum resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR).

Channels TV reports that the Senate called for an investigation following a motion sponsored by Senator Omotayo Alasoadura.

Alasoadura accused Kachikwu of perpetuating irregularities capable of denying the government revenue in excess of $10 billion, as a result of alleged illegal discounts and rebates in the process of lease renewal.

Another senator, Shehu Sani, representing Kaduna central, said: “There have been series of motions related to this issue and I think further investigation is required."

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com earlier reported that said he has never received a call from President Muhammadu Buhari asking him to allocate oil blocs.

Kachikwu said this on Tuesday, July 3, while declaring open 17th edition of the annual “Nigeria Oil and Gas Strategic Conference and International Exhibition’’ in Abuja.
