A former vice chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Ango Abdullahi, has said children from the northern part of the country constitute a large number of the about 12 million out-of-school children in Nigeria.
Abdullahi, made the statement on Tuesday, July 17, when speaking at the 15th graduation and 20th anniversary of Zaria Academy in Kaduna, Daily Trust reports.
The former vice chancellor said the figure was based on a survey report.

He noted that the socio-economic and security of the region was under threat due to the situation faced by children in the north.
Abdullahi stated that sufficient educational background must be put in place to address the social vices currently disturbing northern Nigeria.
He urged northern Nigerians to establish schools and provide scholarship to the less privileged children in their communities.
In other news, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday, July 17 decried the high price of cement in the country despite the fact that Nigeria is ranked the biggest producer of the product in Africa.

Osinbajo, who spoke at Kalambaina, Sokoto, during the commissioning of the $350 million BUA Sokoto cement plant, said cement production is a profitable business despite the challenges of high cost of inputs and exchange rate in the country, Daily Trust reports.
NAIJ.com gathers that Osinbajo said that with the little margin, the manufactures stood to make profits because of the high demand for cement. According to him, Nigeria has about 40 million tons annual capacity of cement production, which is the largest any country can produce in Africa.
