The governor of Kastina state, Aminu Masari, has called on the federal government to extend the ban on the production of cough syrup with codeine to tramadol, and other controlled durgs.
Vanguard reports, Masari said the ban will break the link between the demand for these drugss and its supply chain.
Speaking at workshop on the menace of youth restiveness and drug abuse in Katsina on Thursday, May 10, Masari said his administration had taken a number of measures to curb drug abuse among youths in the state.
The governor who was represented by the secretary to the Katsina state government, Mustapha Inuwa, said the state 'strongly' condemn the use of illegal drug.
"The state government strongly condemns the activities of drug traffickers in view of their negative consequences of destroying the future of our youths, who are the leaders of tomorrow.
I commend the bold and courageous decision of the federal government by banning recently the local production and importation of codeine as addictive cough syrup, which is consistently abused.

I urge the federal government to also take urgent steps to extend the ban to tramadol and other controlled drug with a view to cutting off the link between the demand and supply chain.
On its part, the state government is, therefore, up and doing in bringing about opportunities that will enable our youths to be self-employed and improve on their economic well-being," he said.
NAIJ.com earlier reported that an Islamic group had urged the federal government to support the ban of production of cough syrup with codeine with law.

The Jama’atul Nasril Islam (JNI) said the FG should federal government enact laws that back its action against the production of these drugss.
The secretary general of JNI, Khalid Aliyu, such laws should propose that the FG will punish culprits found dealing with codeine.
