The Italian Football Federation are understood to have asked Ancelotti to take over the vacant national team job after the Azzuri's failed to qualify for the Russia 2018 World Cup.
The Italian media suggest he has been offered a two-year deal to help bring success back the glory days to their national side.
The former Chelsea boss has been out of work since he left his role in charge of Bayern Munich earlier this season after losing 3-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
After recently revealing he was looking to move back to London this summer there had been a belief Ancelotti was preparing himself for a return to coaching in England.
