Dr Saadu Alanamu, recently nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari for the role of commissioner of the National Population Commission (NPC), has been remanded in prison by the Kwara State High Court.

Alanamu is standing trial for alleged fraud to the tune of 182million and was remanded in prison for violating his bail conditions, Punch reports.

Alanamu was earlier nominated into the board of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission by the then acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, despite being probed by the same agency.

Following public outcry, Osinbajo withdrew his nomination after which the ICPC arrested and arraigned him for fraud.

However, his name was forwarded to the Senate by President Buhari last week for confirmation as commissioner of NPC.

Alanamu, who is a former Chairman of the Governing Council of the Kwara State Polytechnic was accused of collecting N5m bribe from a contractor, Salman Sulaiman, as a kickback for the award of a contract.

Alanamu allegedly ensured that the contract for the construction and furnishing of an auditorium in Kwara State Polytechnic, at the cost of N182,369, 625.00, was awarded to Namylas Nigeria Limited even when it was found that the company was not qualified to execute the contract.

He was initailly granted bail by the court but on Wednesday, April 18, the presiding judge, Justice Mahmud Gafar, remanded him in prison after he (the judge)alleged that he was approached by some people and offered a bribe to dismiss the case.
