Nigeria police confirms bomb explosion in Maiduguri town

A police spokesperson has confirmed that an explosion in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, caused the death of two people.

The report by Premium Times quoted the police spokesperson in the state, Joseph Kwaji, saying the two victims were the girls who wore the explosives. According to him, nine other residents of the state capital sustained injuries due to the explosion.

He said the girls wore bomb vests under their garments and tried to sneak into Maiduguri late on Wednesday, March 14. He said vigilant security personnel who spotted the girls as they advanced towards a suburb of the city very close to the Giwa military barracks, ordered them to stop, but the girls kept moving until they detonated their explosives.

The two of them died instantly, while nine residents of the neighbourhood sustained injuries from the shrapnel from the blasts.

“On 14/03/2018 at about 20:25 hours, two female suic*de bombers in an attempt to infiltrate into Alikaramanti area, after Giwa Barracks, were intercepted by security operatives on duty. The two female bombers thereby hurriedly detonated the IED strapped to their bodies killing themselves and injuring nine others.

“Explosives Ordnance Department (EOD) have rendered area safe, while corpses and injured victims have been evacuated to the hospital. Normalcy has since been restored in the area,” the spokesperson said.

NAIJ.com had reported earlier that suspected Boko Haram terrorists reportedly launched an attack in Alikaramchi village, close to Giwa barracks in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state.

According to The Cable, the incident happened on Wednesday night, March 14, hours after President Muhammadu Buhari visited the state to meet with parents of abducted Chibok girls. The president then moved to Yobe state to meet and sympathise with them over the abduction of 110 Dapchi girls.

Meanwhile, two weeks ago, a suspected Boko Haram bomber attacked worshipers in a mosques at Fulatari area of Buni-Yadi, Gujba local government area of Yobe state.

The incident which occurred around 5:30am, left two people injured and the bomber dead.

An eye witness said the teenage bomber attempted to enter the mosque when a worshipper tried to stop her.
