Forgive herdsmen for destroying farmlands - Miyetti Allah begs Imo farmers

Leaders of the Miyetti Allah in Imo state have apologised to farmers in the state for the atrocities committed by some unruly herdsmen.

Vanguard reports that the group, monarchs, farmers and the Imo state commissioner of police, Chris Ezike, had a peace meeting at the command headquarters recently.

The state chairman of Miyetti Allah, Diko, appealed to farmers whose farms were destroyed to find a place in their hearts to forgive.

He said: “I want to apologise to farmers in Imo State. Imo State is a peaceful state and we have been living peacefully with the people of the state. We want to say forgive us.

“We are happy that the Imo State Government has formed a committee to look into this issue and we believe that there will be positive outcome.”

The chairman of the farmers cooperative society Egbema, Otiri Cajetan, called for the herders to establish a ranch and pass through the authorities in the community for approval to prevent further clashes.

He said: ”The issue of ranching must be considered by those who want to rear cattle. They must go into farming to grow food for the cattle; that is what is done everywhere.

“If they want to establish in Egbema, they must go through the hierarchy of the community not just come and occupy a place without any approval.”

Meanwhile, Governor Samuel Ortom has hit back at the police authorities, describing the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, as a drowning man who is unfit to head the force.

Ortorm made the scathing statement in reaction to a similar statement by Jimoh Moshood, the public relations officer of the Nigeria Police Force, who had earlier described the governor as a drowning man on Channels TV, The Cable reports.

The governor, speaking on a radio programme on Tuesday, February 6, said the IGP should resign for failing to do the right thing and go serve full time in his new job as the mouthpiece of Miyetti Allah.
