Undemocratic politicians set to be punished as Senate begins work on law to punish them

- Nigerian Senate has started working on law to punish undemocratic politicians

- Bala Na’allah, the senator representing Kebbi south in the national assembly introduced the bill

- Senate president Bukola Saraki referred the bill to the committee on Judiciary, Human rights and Legal matters

A bill for an act to prescribe punishment for acts and conduct that are undemocratic by elected officials and or persons and other matters connected therewith has been introduced on the Senate floor on Wednesday, January 24 by Senator Bala Na’allah.

Senator Bala Na’allah represents Kebbi south in the national assembly.

Speaking in support of the bill, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe who represents Abia south senatorial district at the national assembly says officials that are undemocratic should not return to power.

“The only way to punish officials that are undemocratic is to make sure they never come back into power,” he said.

Reacting to the bill, Senate president Bukola Saraki referred the bill to the committee on Judiciary, Human rights and Legal matters to report back in 4 weeks.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that chairman, senate committee on FCT, Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi) on Tuesday, January 23, alleged that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was operating an illegal account with Keystone Bank with a current balance of $137 million.

Melaye who raised a point of order during yesterday’s plenary said the NNPC domiciled the Brass LNG Ltd, Joint Venture Company (JVC) account at Keystone instead of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as required by the law.

According to him: ''While some individuals and government appointees will continue to steal, we have decided to continue to expose corruption in public life."
