Nigeria’s defence minister reveals the actual number of Boko Haram suspects in prisons across the country

Nigeria’s defence minister, Mansur Dan Ali, on Saturday, January 6, revealed that the country now has about 20,000 Boko Haram suspects in various prisons adding that many of them are waiting to be profiled before facing trial.

Daily Trust reports that Dan Ali spoke during a weekly Hausa Programme ‘Hannu da Yawa’ aired on FRCN monitored in Kaduna.

He said: “As I'm talking to you now we have about 10,000 to 20, 000 Boko Haram suspects scattered in our prisons. We are working tirelessly to profile them so that we put those fully involve to trial.

“We are presently ‎separating those deeply involved in the insurgency from others who are not.

“The delay in their trial has to do with judicial processes but we need to be careful in the profiling that is why it's taken time before putting them to trial.”

The minister reportedly told Nigerians that the country’s army and the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari were doing their best to end the Boko Haram crisis in the country.

He further tasked Nigerians to play positive roles and support the fight against the terrorists by providing information that will lead to their arrest to security agencies.

“It's high time our people see this fight against the insurgents as a collective responsibility.

“They need to support the security agents with viable information that will lead to arrest of these criminals in the society,” he said.

NAIJ.com earlier reported how the wife of Mamman Nur, the factional leader of Boko Haram, is reportedly among the many members of the group that were killed in the Lake Chad region after a heavy bombardment by the Nigerian military, reports have said.

The military said she died in the confrontation that got her husband severely injured.
