- An Arewa leader, Junaid Mohammed, has expressed dissatisfaction with the Buhari-led administration
- Mohammed said the current government is not doing well in anti-corruption and Boko Haram fights
- He also accused the government of telling lies to the people
The convener, Coalition of Northern Politicians, Academics, Professionals and Businessmen, Junaid Mohammed, in his assessment of the Buhari administration in the outgoing year, said the current government is performing below people’s expectations.
In an interview with the Punch, Mohammed said the Buhari administration has not performed well in the area of war on corruption as well insurgency fight.
He said: “There has not been much of a performance in the area of war on corruption. If anything, what we now notice is that the corruption fight is being sabotaged by a cabal of people around the President who are supposed to be his confidants.
“Secondly, the fight against Boko Haram has not been going well as expected. What is working against the war on Boko Haram is not incompetence on the part of the military, but the corruption around governance and the way the armed forces themselves are being led."
Muhammed also accused the current administration of lying to the people.
“There are areas where the government could have earned public sympathy but they lied through their teeth over the issue of the sickness of the President when in the year 2017 alone, he spent over 130 days outside the country.
"No nation can be governed this way. Any time they are pushed to offer an explanation, they lie. If they lie through their teeth, then you know they cannot be believed. Anybody who continues to lie in the process of governing a people looses the right to be believed that is why nobody believes this government,” he said.
Asked what he expects from Buhari-led administration in 2018, Muhammed said he did not have much expectations.
He, however, said that the administration should desist from telling lies to the people.
He said: “I have to be very modest; I don’t have much expectation from this government. The least I expect is for them to learn to tell the truth. Tell the truth to the people of this country, we are a mature people; we are educated people who expect to be told the truth and not to be lied to.
“We expect also that when people are not performing, they should be sacked. When they are not sacked, it means that somebody does not know what he was up to when he was elected. I sincerely hope that if they get the opportunity for the rest of 2018 and the few months leading to the elections in 2019, something must be demonstrably done well so that the people can rediscover themselves and probably they can redeem themselves.
“As things are now, the people don’t believe in this government. The whole of this year has been spent lying about wanting to change ministers and some people in some key positions who have been found wanting, nothing happened in this direction. These people are sitting tight and engaging in their corruption while we are making a lot of noise about fighting corruption.
“The Boko Haram which they claimed has been defeated has come back and virtually everyday people are being killed in the area of operation and no explanation is coming from the government.
