Troops move to combat herdsmen attacks in Benue state

Governor Samuel Ortom has disclosed that security operatives and troops have been deployed to Odonto in Adim Akpa, a community in Otukpo local council area of Benue state following an attack by suspected herdsmen in the area.

The attack which reportedly occurred on Christmas eve left two people dead and two others wounded, Channels TV reports.

The governor told the residents of the area to report early signs of threats and assist security agencies with information to enable them to respond promptly to threats of attacks.

Meanwhile, the traditional ruler of the community, Adirahu Igede, HRM Oga Ero, has appealed to the governor for increased surveillance and ensure strict implementation of the anti-grazing law.

Ero said the open grazing prohibition law, which has helped to reduce the spate of herdsmen attacks should be fully implemented by the state government.

NAIJ.com had earlier reported that seven people were reportedly killed by unknown gunmen in two separate attacks during the Christmas break at Adim Akpa and Utonkon communities in Otukpo and Ado local government areas of Benue state.

The police public relations officer, Assistant Superintendent Moses Yamu, confirmed the incidents.

It was revealed by an eyewitness that the attack at Utonkon was also carried out by another set of four armed men on motorbikes.

They were said to have stormed the community while some of the locals were busy sharing the meat they jointly bought for the Christmas celebration.
