Welding is the method of joining two separate metal materials. This process helps to create a single permanent construction out of two different metal pieces. Welding is an important aspect of industrial fields. It involves a variety of sciences like no other industrial process. Read about welding, its types and what it is used for.

What is welding used for?

Types of welding

Welding varies in its characteristics and types. Some processes include specific features that can be physically observed. For instance, sparks, extra heat, usage of electrodes and many others. Welding procedures can be implemented anywhere: in buildings, in outer space or even underwater.

As for types of welding, the following exist:

  • Oxy-fuel welding, better known as oxyacetylene type. The main feature of this procedure lies in the usage of the fuel gases and oxygen to enhance the performance of metal materials. It is widely used for cutting, welding and heating of metal pieces.

  • Another common method is the Shielded metal arc welding (or MMA). Some people call it electric welding as it uses an electrode covered with welding compound that provides protection of the welding pool. The electrode is put in a special ferrule. During the welding process itself, it melts down very slowly. Slag protects the welding section from all sorts of air pollution. MMA welding is used for seam bonding and work in conditions of low-frequent electrical resistance.
  • Tungsten inner gas welding is often referred to as TIG. Its basic principle lies in the usage of the T-welding rod. The area of welding is protected with shielding gas (argon). This type can be applied to all kinds of welding and cutting procedures just like the previously mentioned methods.
Welding and its qualities
  • MIG welding. It is based on the utilization of metal and inert gas. It is equipped with a wire gun that provides the wire with power at an adjustable speed of delivery. It flows through the welding pool that is protected with inert gas. So, what is MIG welding used for? Since the day it was invented, this approach to welding has been primarily used for cars in the automobile industry. There, the most popular welding method is an arc spot welding.
  • Arc welding with Flux core is very similar to the previous type. The difference between them is the hollow-type wire that is filled with gumboil material in AWFC’s structural system. This type of welding earned its popularity in construction activities as it showed a high speed of performance and mobility.

These basic information about welding should give you some ideas of where and when this process is useful.
