Breaking: South Africa's ruling party elects deputy president as new leader

South Africa's current deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa is the new president of the African National Congress (ANC), Times Live reports.

NAIJ.com gathered that a total of 4,776 delegates began casting their ballots late on Sunday night and continued until mid-morning on Monday, December 18, to choose between the party's deputy president and former African Union chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

The 65-year-old led the historic negotiations in the 1990s to end apartheid before launching a business career that made him one of South Africa's wealthiest men.

Ramaphosa, a former trade union leader, will replace President Jacob Zuma as ANC president and almost certainly run as presidential candidate in 2019.

He has promised to tackle state capture and corruption, and prioritise economic growth‚ job creation‚ education and land reform.

According to an earlier report by NAIJ.com, President Jacob Zuma of South Africa may be replaced as his nation’s highest office holder by his deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa, BBC reports.

The situation became apparent after over 3,000 branches of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) nominated Ramaphosa as their candidate.

The deputy president garnered 1,860 nominations, while Zuma’s ex-wife Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, garnered 1,310 nominations.
