Zimbabwe coup: Winston Churchill's grandson backs military coup ousting Robert Mugabe

- The grandson of a former British prime minister has reacted to the military coup in Zimbabwe

- Nicholas Soames said the coup is a relief and should be embraced by the Zimbabweans

- He also said it was time for the President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe to go

The grandson of former British prime minster, Winston Churchill has thrown his support for the military coup ousting Zimbabwe's president, Robert Mugabe, Express news reports.

Nichola Soames said the military coup in Zimbabwe on Wednesday, November 15, is a relief and freedom from the 'corrupted' ZANU party.

Soames whose father served as the last governor of Southern Rhodesia before it became Zimbabwe also urged Zimbabweans to embrace the moment.

He said: "I can tell you what Zimbabwe needs, it needs stability and good order. It was the ‘bread basket’ of Africa, with the most wonderful, brilliant farmers. It needs a chance to be able to get on and sort itself out.

"It’s got brilliant black entrepreneurs all over the country. It’s a country that is rearing to go and it has been held back by this dreadful corruption and deceit of the ZANU PF," Soames said.

Also speaking to BBC, Nicholas said he had met Mugabe during one of his recent visit to Zimbabwe.

He said the ousted leader of Zimbabwe at that time looked tired but still in country.

He said he also knew, "It is time for Mugabe to go".

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Zimbabwean military took over the country's capital, Harare, by morning of Wednesday, November 15.

The city also witnessed at least three explosions.

However, it has been gathered that Mugabe has agreed to step down as the leader of the county following his arrest and that of his wife by the Zimbabwean military after the bloodless coup.

Also, Zimbabwean army chief General SB Moyo has said that the president and his wife are safe but the military was targeting criminals around Mugabe.
